- Here is something completely different, something that has been a passion project of mine for a while. I am delighted to present my own arrangement and interpretation of Tarkus for pipe organ.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Tarkus", written in 1971 primarily by keyboardist Keith Emerson, is one of the defining compositions of the prog rock era. At over 20 minutes in length, it spans the full A-side of ELP's second studio album of the same name and features intricate keyboard parts, rapidly fluctuating time signatures, and adequately meaningless vocals. After experimenting with teaching myself parts for the song on piano, I realized that the original instrumentation on Hammond organ and bass translates well to pipe organ. My own arrangement remains largely faithful to the original album version, although I include an original solo in the final Aquatarkus section.
This was performed live at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, IN, on February 4, 2024.

Finally a EMERSON LAKE & PALMER played on a pipe organ this is exactly what it should sound like fantastic excellent job 👏
For years I have thought hearing this and other ELP pieces played on a pipe organ would be cool and I finally got one. I really enjoyed this. I have heard many piano transcriptions and recently a nice acoustic guitar transcription which I have loved but on the pipe organ with bass pedals is really special. I have listened to and loved Tarkus for 50 years. I happy to see young people interested in ELP’s music. You played it beautifully and I imagine that Keith would have approved.
Veramente bravissimo. Un lavoro magistrale! 19:25 nice citation!
Amazing 👀 👍!
I was a big fan of ELP in my day (that makes me old). I grabbed this album as soon as it first came out, around 1971 I believe. I thought then, and still do believe this song, the whole Tarkus side A, was awesome and among their greatest achievements. You have have done justice to the song. I kept waiting for some spot where I was going to say, "Oh well, nice try but you messed up this or that" but it didn't happen.
This was really a joy to listen to. Thanks so much.
Tarkus!!!!!
Beautiful, played by someone who really respects Emerson's composition. Thank-you for this.
Iconoclast, especially here: beautiful footwork!
Avevo sempre sognato di ascoltarla suonata da un organo da chiesa, grazie!
Super impressive. I really like your stop selections: they fit the original really well while maximizing the effectiveness of the organ
What an awesome sound!! 👏👏
Incredible performance all in one take! Can’t imagine the amount of work you put into this. You succeeded in making Tarkus sound like it was originally written for pipe organ.
Loved it!
Absolutely Brilliant! My senses were so consumed by this performance. Bravo!
12:49 woo
I was going to say stunning and brilliant but others have already said that so I won't.
The amount of practice to play this well is so impressive, and salute, cheers.
This is fantastic. You play this with such respect for the original material - I know Keith would have been proud!. You also have done a masterful job of really coaxing the most out of the limited resources of a small but very well-balanced instrument. Is the specification the same as listed in the OHS database online? If so, bravo. I know a lot of organists who couldn't have done as well with an instrument 3 times that size.
Stunning!
I have no doubt that Keith would approve if he were here to hear this.
Brilliant!
Rachel Flowers sent me... 🙂
this is incredible tho, the way you play it gives it such a different character than the original version
15:00- is so sweet.
@12:51: Woo!
