  • Eric Johnson
    Cliffs of Dover Intro
    Live from Austin, TX
    (Cover with Tabs)
I vividly remember the first time I listened to this Intro in my bedroom on a cassette tape that I copied from a friend's CD "Guitar's Practicing Musicians". It started with beautifully clean chords, then sweet violin-like leads came in, I was totally blown away. I couldn't believe that a guitar could sound like that. That was also my first encounter with EJ. Looking back, it changed my life. From then on, I really got deeper and deeper into the guitar and music.
I tried to copy it, but it was too difficult for me. Because there was no transcription, no information on how to get that tone, especially with my poor guitar technique. Time has passed, now I tackle the remarkable piece again. It is still too difficult for me, but brings me much joy even playing slow, note by note. I hope you all feel the same way as I do. So I put this video.
Thank you so very much, Eric. You are my lifetime inspiration. I am writing this while listening to your new album "The Book of Making” which is fantastic.
Thank you so very much all who commented to my previous videos. Your messages have encouraged me to continue with this challenge. It was so tough for me, without your support I was not able to make it.

@@simpsonsgogogo Dude... I totally appreciate and understand the time and effort it took you to figure everything out, write it all out and then play/film it. This includes all of your other videos as well. Personally, I think you're a little nuts, but a good nuts! Thank you for being you! ;-) Hmmm... Here is your next challenge... "Trail of Tears" from the same live album. I double dog dare you! No! I triple dog dare you! And while you're busy doing that I'll be busy transcribing and videoing Tommy Emmanuels "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Just give me a few decades to complete my task. LOL! Cheers!

Could you do a video explaining your OX-software setup and what all someone would need to get into it? I have a positive grid spark now which allows me to get a couple different tones, but have not been able to really accurately replicate this tone. I was really wanting to get into this kind of software based emulator since I don’t plan on performing outside of my desk. I have not been successful in finding a lot of “beginner” level videos about good simulators to get how to set them up so I would really appreciate your help!

First, hold your pick with thumb and second finger. Second, put your left hand finger on 17th fret on the G string. Third, touch the place from the 17th fret above 12th fret up (29th fret) with the index finger of your right hand. Of course, there is no actual 29th fret. On a Stratocaster, it is near the middle pickup. Lastly, pick the string with a pick. If you cannot get harmonics, try adjusting the place where you touch with the first finger back and forth.

    • @vinny5004

Think of the technique as whipping your middle finger onto the fret (right on top of it). It’s not hard, just make sure you hit the fret relatively hard and bounce of it, so that your finger contact is as short as possible. Also helps to have some gain to really get it to ring out, but you should easily be able to do it even on an acoustic.
