Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover Intro Live from Austin, TX 1988 (Cover with Tabs)
Eric Johnson
Cliffs of Dover Intro
Live from Austin, TX
(Cover with Tabs)
I vividly remember the first time I listened to this Intro in my bedroom on a cassette tape that I copied from a friend's CD "Guitar's Practicing Musicians". It started with beautifully clean chords, then sweet violin-like leads came in, I was totally blown away. I couldn't believe that a guitar could sound like that. That was also my first encounter with EJ. Looking back, it changed my life. From then on, I really got deeper and deeper into the guitar and music.
I tried to copy it, but it was too difficult for me. Because there was no transcription, no information on how to get that tone, especially with my poor guitar technique. Time has passed, now I tackle the remarkable piece again. It is still too difficult for me, but brings me much joy even playing slow, note by note. I hope you all feel the same way as I do. So I put this video.
Thank you so very much, Eric. You are my lifetime inspiration. I am writing this while listening to your new album "The Book of Making” which is fantastic.
Thank you so very much all who commented to my previous videos. Your messages have encouraged me to continue with this challenge. It was so tough for me, without your support I was not able to make it.

I remember seeing Eric Johnson play this on Austin City Limits. That beginning is one of the prettiest passages I’ve ever heard. I takes me far away from this place called earth. It’s heavenly!! Thank you for this video lesson. 😎👍🏽
Can you please do love or confusion next
Great work man!!
some heroes don‘t wear capes…thanks a lot for this amazing piece of work! Keep at it with that awesome playing!
can you make a tutorial on that harmonic lol
This videos was maked with much love thanks you
Genial!! ❤
Great work and tone! 🤘
Amazing job ❤
You just gained a subscriber
My goal is to get that tap at like 00:55 as effortlessly as eric does
WOW.
Even with the tablature that you have just illustrated I probably could never play it the way you just did fantastic 😎👍
Awesome! I've been looking for this for years. Thank you soo much!
Is this how eric would have actually played it?
AMAZING!! Been looking for this for years, thank you so much.
0:55 whats the name of this technique?
Awesome playing my man. Keep uploading videos! Dont leave us alone
That clean intro is beautiful indeed. How do you get the pedal G power chord going? Delay? loop pedal maybe?
Thanks! It's DD-2, replaced its switch to 1P1T.
Awesome playing, beautifull phrasing too ! That tone is perfect, what did you used to obtain it ?
Amazing
Not me thinking this was easy. These chords are not easy to play
How beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼comment on this tone, what did you use, don't bother, talk about your effect settings
My dear, teach me how to make this timbre🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Amazing!
Damn. Amazing. ❤
Gear used ? Great
Thank you!💗
inspiring! thanks for the vid and all the effort/tabs ❤
That was amazing. Could you please upload a lesson on this intro for those like me who can’t read music or understand tabs? I learn by ear and I’m stumped on learning Eric Johnson’s style.
Tone and notes sound good. Timing needs lots of work.
VERY NICE! well done
The guitar tone is utter EJ perfection. Never heard anyone get that close.
1:50 sounds like nut or neck is off center lol
Does anyone know what mode and key he is soloing in?

How did you get the tone
Just brilliant!! Absolutely fantastic performance and musicality!! *Is this a Custom Shop?
💥🔥🎸🎸🎸🎸💥🔥🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🤘👌🎼
So sweet you’ve really been working on the chord vocabulary that’s incredible! EJ is the most chord challenging player and you nailed it, hats off to you!
muito bom!👍
Amazing cover! Just wondering what your pedal/amp setup is to get this great tone?
🥹 Astounding.
Amazing playing and tab too...tone is spot on...thanks for all the hard work.
What was the chord at 0:55? With the harmonics it was so pretty!
EMaj6/9
How do you get that tone😃😃😃 plz answer
Mostly chorus and mild delay, I would mainly focus on dialing in the chorus pedal first because that's the effect you hear most then add just mild echo with your delay pedal. Add OD/gain to your crunch preference and then you are off to the races! Have fun. :)
how did you make the sustain G at the beginning until the second part? its an pedal effect?
Yes, it's Boss DD-2. I swapped the switch to a mechanical one to make that effect.
thanks a lot! @@simpsonsgogogo
This is really fantastic, have always loved the ending of that video.
Man you just did the impossible, awesome 👌
