I think they do, but here was a moment of glory for the team! Only God know how many times Damo disassembled and reassembled engines for each race.

Hahaha!! I bet if they do some training for this, all can be done in less than10 minutes for a KTM/Husqvarna TOP END REBUILD!
I only see them replacing the cylinder, looks to me the piston stays on.
Piston was also changed. Watch again the details.
@@ZonaEnduro Watched it several times and can't see it. At 1.37 the cylinder is off, they then start cleaning the crankcase. At 2.56 a dude is holding what looks like a new piston in his hand, old piston is clearly still left in the engine. At 3.20 they clean the old piston, why would they do that if replacing it? At 3.27 same dude is still holding a piston, old or new? At 3.35, you can see a piston on the rod, is that old or new? At 4.04, the piston can be seen again from the other side, looks like the old one to me. Now the view is blocked but at 4.40 they are mounting the cylinder again. If they replaced the piston I think we should have seen them spend more time removing and installing the clips, you just don't do that in a few seconds even if you only have to remove one on the old piston and have one preinstalled on the new. I think they inspected the piston for wear and deemed it good for the rest of the race.

I didnt see them remove it as well. But I did hear one of the techs say "Its OK" 3:04 referring to the piston after they used compressed air and gas. The guy to the left had the new piston in his hand. But all in all if OP says they changed it ...then they must have in the moments you can not see anything. With the correct tools it does not take long to change a piston.
Watching again at 3:45 you can see the tech rubbing the front of what looks like the OLD piston. If they changed it...they are fast AF. All in all if they were putting the new one in...why mess around with it and not just pull it off asap?
Notice when the cylinder head wouldn’t come off he played with the kick starter to get the piston off the top end a little bit. Noice 👍🏼 1:29

None!! 15 minutes with plastics on and off. was so quick!

Around 80-100h for us, probably in a factory team chaged after every race.

Do you know why they filled the crankcase with fuel ? Did this bike get drowned ?
To cool it down. As you can see the fuel is boiling instantly. Cylinder was cracked.
No its to wash bottom end out. To make sure there's no bits in bottom end
It was to cool it down... the fuel started boiling, and you can see the heat coming off the bottom end...
Wrong .. they wouldn't be able to touch the cylinder if it was frying .. that's the fumes from the fuel your seeing .. yes it was hot but not overheated there were flushing the bottom end
He probably submerged it in water, and they were using the fuel to clean out the crankcase.
That’s probably why they were doing a complete top-end job as well
What if some dirt came down in the engine? Haha :D

The compressed air has got to be blowing some of the dirt off the frame into the engine.
Have to be careful not to blow out one of the Main Seals too.

@@ZonaEnduro i have a brand new 2023 TE300i HE that I haven’t even Ridden yet and i want to Swap out the Stock Piston before i break it in . Im hearing that the rear of the Skirt is to long and it will hit the Crank and Grenade the entire top end.

He probably submerged his bike in water, that’s why they were doing the complete top in. They poured the fuel into the crank case, to clean it out.
They poured it there probably to clear the metal shavings that is in the crankcase left of the Piston/cylinder
Hell I've changed the top end on 2 strokes between motos, by myself.

@@ED-on8to it's a different philosophy. In the 80's and 90's rules were stricter too: during the race days riders couldn't get any service by the team ( factory team or private one), which could only prepare tools and spare parts. The work had to be done by the rider himself
5:41 dude wants no camera time...lol thats funny, I'd do the sane damned thing.
1:46..now the cylinder is off (roughly) let's get the compressor out...maybe a 1 minute quick wash down with water then air before could make more sense, cools the cylinder a little too, can't believe that still boiled fuel in the crankcase it was so hot, that was amazing but as for mechanical skill, that was not very impressive, which i think the title was suggesting it was.
You want a tip? obviously not your a racing team but a simple far less rough way to do a full top end change, as in the piston and cylinder, like you would expect a factory racing team to do, if you are going to break it open in the pits, is to just lift the cylinder far enough to expose the pin clips, remove one clip then slide the pin out the side and then piston and cylinder is off very easily, a bit fiddly but you are a racing team, takes 20 seconds when you have done it a few times on the same bike, then the new factory racing team member can swap that for a brand new piston and cylinder, they put it on by doing the clip trick in reverse. Can you smoothly put a piston into a cylinder easier on the bench or bike frame?
As a racing team, you could even make a carbon fiber crankcase cover to slide under the piston before you remove the clip, if you got real race you could even make the cover hold the con rod still to make the install that little bit easier.
Interesting the camera seems to jump in between 1:35 and 1:37 how long in between that edit? You can remove the piston clip quicker than you edited your video clip ;)
Now i watched the rest, where is the part when you put the cylinder back on FFS, and you also have to remove the head to do it that way, with the clip trick you can have the head already on...... but i am only 99% certain you could do it on this particular cylinder, i couldn't catch a frame of it to be sure in this entire video.
On my Aprilia RS 125 , I put my piston in the barrel and then place it on the con rod and then put the clip in, you are totally right about how easily it can be done ✅
Rather than placing the Barrel over the piston and then manipulating the rings to go into the barrel 🤷🏻♂️

Four techs. Ten minutes. So 40 labor-minutes at say, sixty bucks an hour.
So a top end rebuild should be parts plus $40 in the flat rate manual.
I think I'll stop doing my own mechanical work .
Damn 60$ an hour for a factory mechanic or any dealer would be damn cheap xD where I live you pay about 100€ per hour (110$)
Man I hate Husqvarna dirt bikes they're nothing but problems that's the one thing that should have never made
