Jeff is one of my guitar heroes. What a player. I got to see him in Dallas when he was touring his first solo album. He made time for us all after the show and was just such nice and humble guy. Nothing but respect for this man.

There's something about the technical players from that era that is just different I guess. Like Jeff, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Marty Friedman, Vinnie Moore, Andy Timmons etc. Maybe it's because guitar instructionals were kind of a rite of passage back then?

As soon as I opened the video and saw the guitar I thought the same thing... And I'm already obsessing over his sig Kelly. That man is going to break my bank account. I'm a Jackson fanboy as is, but also a big Loomis fan as well.

I have a project in my DAW labeled "Practice". Recording yourself really exposes your flaws. I make a new track each time I practice to track my progress. Works well for me.

He doesn't close his hand when shredding though. And the reason is the sharpy pick. He uses his pinky to gauge the distance from string to the tip of his pick. He only closes his wrist in certain instances when it's comfortable such as tremolo picking. I do the same thing. But the moment I practice scale runs i open my hand again to loosen up and I use my pinky as a guide as well bc I also use a sharpy pick.

@@drugjoza5000 Let me clarify, when I said metal I meant metal from what existed at the time. Metal is now with djent/metalcore/deathcore inspired bands, and while there are many great ones, Nevermore was one of the last "traditional" styled metal to exist. Not hating on the new, I love a lot of new stuff and I can always hear when it's a Nevermore inspired band!

His comment on only using the wrist is completely misguided. We know from the research done by Cracking the Code that several arm motions work for fast speeds, including forearm rotation and elbow movement, and combinations of wrist and forearm rotation.
Using the right hand closed down is also completely subjective and might actually increase the amount of tension on it.
