Reminds me of my old classical guitar teacher who told me when playing a piece hit each note with good timing and with confidence and even if you hit an incorrect pitch most people won’t know. Hit all the right notes but with poor timing and everyone will know. Rhythm is key to sounding like you know what you’re doing. From your lessons I’ve learned so much and especially love this sort of lesson that just inspires me to put on a jam track and just go for it. Thank you.
Every now and again you switch a light on in my dark cellar of music understanding, and I stop banging my knee into a sharp corner. This is one such episode, thank you so much.
You can switch beetween blues and diatonic. Let say you play in A dorian key, your diatonic scale would be A dorian, B phyrgian, C lydian, D mixolydian, E aeolian, F#locrian, G major. But, this is the secret, you can replace all that diatonic scales with two blues scale (major and minor). Dorian, phyrgian, aeolian -> minor blues. Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian -> major blues. Locrian stay in locrian, but you can add chromaticism b7,7,1. However, those switch needs to resolve to the diatonic notes that become the special features of the scale (like Phyrgian, the special features are b2 & #5. Lydian, #4 & 7. And so on). Those switch not only make more interesting solos, but also easier, since we often forget our position related to diatonic scale once we're moving to other frets, so just play blues scale and remember the diatonic notes later after we get the feel.
This dude speaks my "guitar mind language" in terms of shapes and bones and stuff. Literally how I picture the guitar. Great video man. Extremely helpful. That confidence bit is SOOOO important when trying to pull off these fusion-y things.
I'm 72 and used to play rock and got turned on to John McLaughlin. I just keep coming back to it and slowly but surely I'm still learning and having fun, thanks.
Wow, I was stuck in my guitar journey, unable to figure out how to move up and down the scale and sound decent. This video hit the spot, it help me across the line and on to the next learning goal. I'm sincerely thankful for this video tocayo! :).
Great Lesson, I do all this subconsciously as with a lot of different concepts with guitar playing... It's nice to see teachers break things down in an understandable fashion... I like the Blue Note explanation theory...
I learned a lot from you, I was overwhelmed with theories that I need to memorize and internalize also applying modals. After checking this tutorial I have an idea on how this works, but it cost my guitar string lmao 😂
Its funny how satchel mention this in one of his lesson in GuitarWorld. He said "you can play chromatically any note you want as long as you hit the right note on a downbeat, but i expect you to hit the right notes or else ill come to your house"
hi David! thx for the lesson. I appreciate a lot your approach because I'm a rock gtr player and I've found your lesson very useful! Bye from Turin, Italy!
By all means you're a fusion guitarist--the Nirvana of any musician--and a very good one l would add...All the best David and greetings from Havana... Your insights have been more than helpful.
this is great. it's 7 am and I am just in the studio. I am going to go over this until I'm happy with it. bring on the backing tracks, and a million thanks
Great lesson! Instead of happy birthday I’m going to use Hush-Hush Sweet Charlotte, Sweet Charlotte don’t you cry.... I love the idea of thinking of the notes rhythmically.
Great lesson David if you slow it down it sounds like a jazz blues solo aka Robin Ford. A good way to practice is by just playing the pentatonic a few times then start singing the notes and you find your fingers seem to know the pitch and just go there, play with rhythm add a few more notes and your on your way.
Love it as I do all your videos. And it makes fusion click for me too. I’m a bit confused about the graphic tab. It appears to be D# pentatonic but your playin D on the guitar.
Just confirmed exactly what I had assumed. 95% of what I was playing after watching this sounded like complete dogshit but I don’t care: it’s got me outside of the box and I can tell it will eventually come together!! Thanks again
Great lesson. I think you skipped one absolutely necessary and fundamental instruction: ALWAYS USE A METRONOME!!!’ Start on an embarrassingly slow speed until you. Ail every beat and the metronome sound disappears, covered by your note. This improved my playing faster than anything else I’ve ever applied. It becomes an addiction ! A game.
This guy actually made me believe there is a fast "hacky" way to play complex jazz improvisations. Yeah, introduce those blue notes and people will think you are Frank Gambale, even though you started playing a year ago😂
I agree with that for every genre except maybe heavy metal shred. You're not really looking rhythmic elements there. It's more about a machine gun of notes, perfectly timed and shot out in creative ways. I'm only mouthing off for fun. He's right 99% of the time.
I adore your video! Your video was suggested so I checked it out. Thought I'd show some love 💞 I run a channel too. If you have a moment to check it out that would be much appreciated! 💖
Who cares what fools alot of people!? What people want is this rhythm and feel, like the party they want. That means that whoever is playing drums, the most important instrument in the world that I'd want to play with, is gonna have to blast off! Tony Williams took control over a song like that once, and it is phenomenal. So, I think the whole thing is a feel and sound. Not people analyzing your melody and harmony. Plus, you want the long sought after female constituent in your audience for this kind of music. And if we face up to that fact, that's where it's at. If you do so, you've hit the mother lode.🥳🏌♀

Man this totally helps. Thanks for this!
I find this perfect to add modal modulations when all the notes are available you can chance modes easier
Very good lesson, with a cool approach. Also: awesome playing!
Me roaming the block for a bundle of quickies as usual.

Totaly amazing!!!!
Thank you!
Really enjoyed that !
What amps do you recommend to play fusion?
Great lesson David if you slow it down it sounds like a jazz blues solo aka Robin Ford. FYI, it's Robben Ford. 😎
Yes as soon as posted I realised I spelt it wrong, I know too many “Robins” I’m such a big fan of his, thanks for pointing it out.👍
Fantastic
This is the best life hack I ever discovered on the Internet
Thanks
Very good
Thanks david from indonesia 🇲🇨

Good video
the tutorial is superb
Love it as I do all your videos. And it makes fusion click for me too. I’m a bit confused about the graphic tab. It appears to be D# pentatonic but your playin D on the guitar.
Nice vedio
Dave, how do you get the fusion tone? I haven't found a good video on that. Thanks!
Calling the diatonic notes "bones" is great. I love that. Just having that in my head makes the rest make sense. Thanks David!
what chords did you use for the vamp, to give it that Fusion sound....
You are Great!!!!!
This is one of your top ten lessons David! I need to go into it very deeply. You've given some great keys here to unlock the imagination! Thank you!
Thank you Roger!!
man please make a video on easy chords and chord progressions that we can use in fusion
The pentatonic is our “scale-leton”.
Now we just need to find a good reason to play fusion guitar and we’re set.
Oh.
Oh...
I can’t thank you enough!! What I’m playing might sound like absolute dog shit but goddamn I’m loving this!!!😂😂
Just confirmed exactly what I had assumed. 95% of what I was playing after watching this sounded like complete dogshit but I don’t care: it’s got me outside of the box and I can tell it will eventually come together!! Thanks again
Full Minor 7th flat 5 blues scale. Also play Major scale with a flat 5.
Great lesson. I think you skipped one absolutely necessary and fundamental instruction:
ALWAYS USE A METRONOME!!!’ Start on an embarrassingly slow speed until you. Ail every beat and the metronome sound disappears, covered by your note.
This improved my playing faster than anything else I’ve ever applied. It becomes an addiction ! A game.
give us the Backing track please to practice that legendary lesson
Once you get some decent facility and technique down then it’s all about rhythm.
Easy trick play the diminished scale a tone sharper to any dominant chords! Just do it😂
This guy actually made me believe there is a fast "hacky" way to play complex jazz improvisations. Yeah, introduce those blue notes and people will think you are Frank Gambale, even though you started playing a year ago😂
the blue note never sounds odd to my ear. Sounds just right
WOW😲
The "AHA moment"
I agree with that for every genre except maybe heavy metal shred. You're not really looking rhythmic elements there. It's more about a machine gun of notes, perfectly timed and shot out in creative ways. I'm only mouthing off for fun. He's right 99% of the time.
Help me out. Like alot thank u
❤
Damn ... I ve been caught out .... that has been my life of guitar, confidently playing bum notes ,,, erm i mean Jazz notes
In the PDF, Dorian pos 1 isn't the 6th on the b-string missing?
Dont understand the reason playing in D pentatonic..
I adore your video! Your video was suggested so I checked it out. Thought I'd show some love 💞 I run a channel too. If you have a moment to check it out that would be much appreciated! 💖
This dude looks like a less insane scott stapp... great guitarist though...
