    It's clever of the writers to write the late Lord Grantham as a member of Prince Alfred's household, thereby providing an excellent excuse for him and Violet to attend the 1874 wedding in Russia (which by the way DID happen in real life). Prince Alfred was also the first British royal family member to travel extensively across the British Empire -- making trips to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, HK, India & Ceylon. Presumably Violet's husband traveled with him; that's why she said her husband was an avid traveler who brought back all sorts of stories to his wife at Downton!

    • @harringt100

      What does she mean by "a member of Prince Alfred's household?"

    • @edukid1984
      @edukid1984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@harringt100 It means the late Lord Grantham was appointed to be one of the Prince's "support staff" or "assistants", so to speak. That duty will require him to work regularly around the Prince - an international trip to Russia to manage his Prince's wedding, for example. Just like how noble women are selected to be the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. This is one of those things that titled aristocrats are expected to do when asked by the monarch.

      Violet just wanted her comfortable life at this age. She was happy being independent. She could have paid back the Princess other ways. She was more upset about losing her money and status than being separated from her husband. She would have been thrilled if Violet had set her up in more comfortable circumstances without her having to be around her husband again.

    We need a prequel centered around Violet's arrival at Downton as a young bride! We need to see her and her husband grow to a place where she is seduced by the Russian Prince and tried to run away. We need to see her go head to head with her own mother in law. Does Violet have siblings? We need more of her!

    • @elamplough1
      @elamplough1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's a nice idea but Maggie Smith is so great as Violet that a prequel - which would obviously need a different actress - could be a huge disappointment. Could anyone really live up to expectations? Downton Abbey fans may love the old Violet but could they really love a young Violet? Realistically, she wouldn't have had quite the same personality.

      Actually, had the prince left Russia with Violet and they just sailed around the world, he might have been much better off than if he’d stayed in Russia, as long as he’d gotten enough of his money out before the Revolution. They might have been shunned by British society, but there were plenty of places they’d have been welcome.

    Looking back on these clips I find myself wondering if it's entirely fair to criticize Ms Bunting without also looking more critically at the people she argued with. Because as much as she was inappropriate, excessively confrontational, and just downright rude, Robert and this fellow here (who also turned out later in the series to be a raging antisemite) were also myopic and entitled. Robert was never one to like his power being challenged, and I think ultimately that's what annoyed him the most.
    It was outrageously rude and inappropriate to confront him as she did while a guest in their house, but pretty much everything Ms Bunting said had a ring of truth to it, and that made him uncomfortable.

  • @Vesnicie
    @Vesnicie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Funny, at the time of airing, I felt that the character of Miss Bunting was too much of a caricature, put there as a sort of strawman to knock down a lot of very valid arguments against the Grantham way of life without having to present those arguments in an intelligent or developed way. However, now that much of the world seems dead-set on outdoing the dear missy at being humorless, tactless, rude, self-righteous pains in the nethers, I really appreciate just how much more ridiculous people can always be.

    The writers did a good job making Miss Bunting one of the most annoying characters in the show. Whether or not the refugees supported the Tsar, who does something like that. Tsar supporters or not these were people that lost their homes, families, and everything that had ever meant anything to them during the revolution. And Miss Bunting sees these people and thinks "Oh, I better make a comment how their government was wrong"

    My show, my show, my two men are on this series. They are the most handsomest men in the world, Jim Carter and Hugh Bonneville! 😊Hi, I’m Brittney Hill :D . I really enjoy your uploads! I’m looking to live in Los Angeles county, where Hollywood is! I am currently living in Orange County, and looking for a place to live in Los Angeles County. Yay, me! My whole life, I’ve always done everything by myself, literally, so that’s why I’m super proud that I figured out my, Destiny (All by myself). My Destiny is to get married to a few guys, all at once, and be the perfect happy family. Those guys are, Tom Ellis (he is a Russian actor on a hit-show in America called, Lucifer), Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter (they are 2 really handsome gentlemen on the show, Downton Abbey), Louis Garrel (he is super famous French actor on the movie, Dreamers), and then I am also to marry, Henry Cavill and Johnathan Rhys Meyers (they are super hot guys on the huge show, The Tudors). I will become their Wife, and Mother to our children (it’ll be my first time being a Mom). So far, we have 3 daughters. I am also going to, finally, become a, famous, American, Actress on the big screen. The second thing in my Destiny is to be a real, live, Queen, for the United Kingdom. I was born to do all of these things :D, so it is in my blood. I’m Middle class, and I AM, social climbing, so I will, marry the first rich man I come in to contact with, of course. HAHA! Either way my story plays out, I WILL END UP MARRIED TO THESE MEN, POST HASTE! That is a promise. I’m 31 years old, and I’m not just any Millennial, I’m, THAT, Millennial! You can join me wherever you see me in person :D ! See you on the big screen :D ! Family. Love. Love. Love

      @@Messier45_Pleiades This is very primitive point of view. First of all, who had democracy at that time? People lived more or less the same all around Europe. In UK child labour existed for a good while. That were such times, and it was OK for that time. Just two classes existed - rich and poor, but if bolsheviks did not destroy the country - Russia could have established that middle class. Revolutions happen when some one abroad sponsors it - to ruine the legitimate government and destroy the country. And than cover it up by feeding you with fairy tales about poor good people revolting against evil government. Yes, there was no middle class at that time but not only in Russia- again all around Europe.
      Aristocrats always donated money to poor,always sponsored schools and universities, built churches that contributed to the education a great deal. You can find the signs of it in historical documents. Nearly all the schools in Russia were build thanks to aristocrats. Democracy by the way is not such a good thing as you probably think.

      @@georgeouroussoff3830 We are talking about barely 100 years ago. The UK had a monarchy and a democracy. The schools in Russia were built by aristocrats for the children of other aristocrats., which is also true of all the fee -paying schools in the UK and Europe. Russia was a tinderbox. They slaughtered Jews by the 100s of thousands. What happened the the daughters and the young boy was horrible. They did not need to be murdered, but the system had to change and it did. You cannot have an absolute ruler and expect millions of people to bow to them. Your point of view is imperialist and it is archaic.

    I'm still so annoyed that this show almost always presents liberal characters in a negative light. Even Tom is shown to have been "civilized" through his time at Downton, and in doing so, became a "proper capitalist" which is awful because of the Irish constantly being admonished by the English for being "uncivilized," which is exactly the sort of thing Tom in the early seasons riled against
