Local theaters would book all these live shows, and performers would travel from one town to another to get short term work. Abbot and Costello did this act thousands of times, which is why it was so flawless.

These comedians are the only 2 people that are in the baseball hall of fame that had nothing to do with the sport just because of this bit and how genius it was.

I must say that I've been watching a number of "reaction videos" to this Abbot & Costello routine, and it was really nice to see an Indian couple understanding and appreciating it better than almost any of the American or British people I've seen "reacting" so far. Everyone gets at least some of it, but some take a while to figure out what's going on. Of course, back in 1935 or so, Americans would have been rolling on the floor and the Brits would have considered it "not half bad, old chap, what"...but time has passed, and humor has changed. This is one of the true classics of American humor, and I'm happy to see that there are still people out there who still have ears to hear.
I was a baby when Abbott and Costello were in their prime.THIS is real comedy!! They were clean cut and no profanity or sexuality.They do have other skits and I my opinion, God broke the mold when they died and I my 72 years I've never seen or heard anything like them. I still roar with laughter when I watch this particular skit! I have watched it countless times when I need a good laugh as only they can give you and your whole family can safely watch it! The more you watch it, the more you'll understand it (since Lou Costello talks so fast!😘) and the more you "belly laugh!"They are comedy at it's best! Bud and Lou were icons in the field, along with Jack Benny, Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and many more. The speed of the delivery may be down to the kinescope or whatever was used to film this performance. Recording speeds don't seem to have been quite as standardized at the time. You can that on YT by clicking the settings icon on the individual video and changing the playback speed. It doesn't change the pitch of the voices. Bud and Lou were the first non-players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and it was because of this routine. I believe it was in 2007 that Chian-Lung Hu was playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In one game, he hit a single. Commentator Vin Scully excitedly announced: 'After 70 years, I can finally say it: Hu's on First!'

Besides the genius of the jokes it was also how they delivered the jokes. Abbott all serious and deadpan. Quintessential straight man in the duo. Costello getting confused and frustrated trying to get a straight answer he understands. The expressions and his body language were always superb. You should watch one of the movies they did like Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Buck Privates or Africa Screams. They did quite a few movies.
To top everything off, Bud Abbott was an epileptic. How he ever got through a long complicated routine without having a seizure is totally beyond me. They had some of the absolute best routines in the history of comedy. 13 X 7 = 28 is another great one!

Believe it or not, when they did this sketch on stage back in the '30s they ended with "I don't give a damn" (the shortstop's name) but when they transitioned to television it was thought that a word like "damn" was too racy for audiences so they changed it to "darn". LOL

Their bread-and-butter was taking old vaudeville and burlesque show comedy routines and re-working them. Who's On First is one of those old routines.

In another skit, Tim Conway steals the show telling "The Siamese Elephants Story" in one of the skits from "The Family", and Vicki Lawrence (plays Momma) makes a comment at the end that has everyone rolling on the floor.

Oh, we Indians would have an extremely easy time understanding the talk of 1940s Westerners because they speak with such clear pronunciation and heavy accent. It's exactly like the accent of Indians of today's era. However, we might have great difficult understanding today's era's American accent because it's totally different and not at all as clear, as was in 1940.
Even the attitude and behaviour in Abbott & Costello shows and the simple, innocent humour would be totally relatable by today's Indians. It feels so different compared to today's America.

In modern American tv serial comedy there’s the comedian and there’s the straight guy.. the comedian that bounces off of the straight guy to get his laughs. The straight guy doesn’t get laughs. Somehow the audience is the one who gets the laughs because these guys were both straight. They just bounced off each other for the length of the routine.
You have to understand to really get the joke you have to have a knowledge of American baseball and it's easiest form the idea of running the bases and getting back to home. That being first base second base third base and home base a picture and a batter as far as all of the fundamentals no.

Abbott & Costello's whole routine was based on a co. Plete misunderstanding of where the question mark IS or IS NOT. The fast talking Lou Costello got it wrong almost 100% of the time. Normally, when who, what, when, where, & why are used, there is a question being asked. In this case, these words were all nouns. Therefore Bud Abbott always answered straightly accordingly. A timeless brilliant skirt.
I would recommend the following bits, "handcuffs", "loafing" and "7×13=28" also, they are all classic bits, "who's on first?", might very well be the most famous comedy bit of all time.

You have to consider how hard this was to write. The hours and hours it took to practice this. This is the pinnacle of comedy art.

I have seen this so many times... it's always funny.
Abbott & Costello's whole routine was based on a co. Plete misunderstanding of where the question mark IS or IS NOT. The fast talking Lou Costello got it wrong almost 100% of the time.
Normally, when who, what, when, where, & why are used, there is a question being asked. In this case, these words were all nouns. Therefore Bud Abbott always answered straightly accordingly.

I would recommend the following bits, "handcuffs", "loafing" and "7×13=28" also, they are all classic bits, "who's on first?", might very well be the most famous comedy bit of all time.
I keep watching these... I love that something that defined my childhood is now not only transcending generations, but also transcending cultures. Good comedy is good comedy. Glad you're enjoying it.
