I've said it before and I'll say it again: from Zak Starkey's debut in '96 to the Ox's death in '02, The Who hit a second peak as a live act that saw them outdo their younger selves time and again. This knockout performance is but a single nugget atop a mountain of proof.
Gotta love Roger cracking a laugh and grin at 0:39 in the Ox’s direction. Like, after 30 years, he still can’t keep from laughing at those snarky lyrics! 😂
First band I ever saw was John's Ox. Then Seen The Who at Swansea ,Stafford,Wembley MEN with John.5 more times in Liverpool. Going again in July at St Helens Rugby ground. The Who?....the best ever.
Wooow.... what a killer version of My Wife............by far one of the best songs in the whole show that concert...................The Who at its best............RIP John the Ox Entwistle.....
He will always be astonishing. I've been playing drums 39 years ( I'm 51) and he plays as fast and as complex as any drummer. We lost such a genius when the Ox left us, xxx
Crazy Entwistle!! Whole thing is mind melting today. Best 2 parts were the Rodney Dangerfield intro, "My Wife..." and when he tosses the pick because it was slowing him down at 1:51. Classic Thunder!
John's roadie: "Is this enough amps for you boss?" John: "Theres only half the factory there, chuck a few more on!" Roadie: "Okay..." *goes to cry in a corner*
Best song? I'm not sure - the Who have so many great ones, but this is certainly one of my favorites! I love when John throws away the pick and starts REALLY jamming. (About 1:30)
Story I heard was that they needed a song to finish Who's Next and Pete asked John if he had something. John told him he had a song he had decided not to put on the solo album he had just done. This was it. So a song that was basically a filler became another great one on what many think is the greatest rock album ever recorded. I have always loved this song and it is nice the see the band really, giving it their all in this clip. They didn't always do that. A bit fast for the vocals, but the playing is just amazing.
And in no way am I taking anything away from Keith or how amazing he was, or how irreplaceable he was, it's just amazing how much Zac's been able to do. Keith was such a character, loved making people laugh, and had a very devious side (explosives, toilets, cars and pools (and TVs)), add that to his unique style of drumming, Zac can fill in, and in may ways fill his shoes, but never replace him.
@FFEMT152 hehehe i love that scene in Tommy film, in the pinball battle, where everyone is detroying instruments and getting wild, and he just stands there, playing his musical magic. The OX, for sure!
In times every bassman had a sound with no brilliance at all, The Ox showed me how a bass should sound like. I am now 34 years on stage - and I was right making Ox my great influence. I love his sound hammering with the fingers of his right hand - and I own two Buzzard - basses, a Thunderbird and my own "Frankenbass" to have a sound like he had - with slightly smaller setup.
While Keith Moon is irreplaceable, Zac really seems to channel him in his playing and provide the spark needed to help fill his shoes. As far as Entwistle, how do you replace him? He was so unique, often taking the role of lead guitar, on bass, plus his totally unique tone, it could take 20 years to find someone who could even start to fill those shoes. I'm glad that Pete and Roger are still out there, but with losing John, it's just not possible. Imagine if Keith and John were still around!
Roger is definitely propping up Johns vocal’s during this…..but Johns bass is at the top of his game. He was the GOAT bassist, in my non bass playing opinion, for what it’s worth.
Deep thoughts by a man named Stink, errrr. Sting” The Who wouldn’t have been The Who without Joy Entwhistle “ no bleep Sherlock. My favorite of the songs John wrote for The Who. Off The Who’s Next album 1971. It’s been over two decades since John died and he is still terribly missed by Who fans all over the world. Since John died The Who has gone through more bass players than Spinal Tap went through drummers. I still laugh when I see John in that skeleton suit at the Isle of Wight concert. Which I assume was the inspiration for the similar suit Christopher Guest wore in Spinal Tap!!!!
I remember reading a story that said as all hell brokr loose on stage around him,John stood and kept it all together for the sake of his musical pride.
@FFEMT152 The electricity coming from the fingers of the Ox are more powerful and exciting than a thousand windmills and stage stomps. Plus no soaking the feet after the show...the man was ready to go all the way till the end! Love Da EEW!
no es que mi grupo favorito sea the who pero john entwistle sin duda es el mejor bajista de todos los tiempos su sonido era arrollador no conozco a un bajista que lo iguale o menos que lo supere
Pete is on fire nowadays, he's really become a great guitarist indeed. However, nothing beats John's pick to finger transfer. Man, you just can make those fingers stop when they've started hammering.
WORLDS GREATEST BASS PLAYER ... ! RIP
By far...
I've said it before and I'll say it again: from Zak Starkey's debut in '96 to the Ox's death in '02, The Who hit a second peak as a live act that saw them outdo their younger selves time and again. This knockout performance is but a single nugget atop a mountain of proof.
Agree
Apparently so; now I know what I missed. This performance is outstanding and so are versions I've seen online of Magic Bus from this era
Agree. When the Ox passed it lost a magic 1/4.
Agree Zak was taught by Keith Moon so makes sense
I agree, I actually prefer listening to this and watching this gig than live at Leeds. Pete is on stop form
Love when he tosses the pick and switches to his mad finger style during the solo. RIP Ox!
My buddy caught a pick from Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster cult.
Jeanne Lyons. now he has no fear for the reaper :o
Rigor mortis is a real thing...
@@chriserrickson1624 yea truly
Doing coke at his mid 50's 💀
Bet that pick was burning hot.
The best bass player that ever walked the earth.
Absolutely
John’s playing on Quadrophenia, is as good as it gets.
Who's Next. the best album ever.
Gotta love Roger cracking a laugh and grin at 0:39 in the Ox’s direction. Like, after 30 years, he still can’t keep from laughing at those snarky lyrics! 😂
I count myself fortunate to have seen Peter, Roger and John three times (1996, 1997 and 2000).
I count myself as fortunate to have seen the actual, real Who do Tommy in it's entirety in 1969
First band I ever saw was John's Ox.
Then Seen The Who at Swansea ,Stafford,Wembley MEN with John.5 more times in Liverpool. Going again in July at St Helens Rugby ground.
The Who?....the best ever.

LIkely the most intense performance in the history of Rock n' Roll. Certainly the best drumming, bass, and guitar work.. Amazing
Zak does an awesome job filling in Keith's shoes on the drums.
Crazy Entwistle!! Whole thing is mind melting today. Best 2 parts were the Rodney Dangerfield intro, "My Wife..." and when he tosses the pick because it was slowing him down at 1:51. Classic Thunder!
I think that each one of Entwistle's fingers has its own brain haha:D
When Pete and John turn to Zak... Simply magical. Makes me remind of good ol' Keith. Definitely the best choice to replace Moon.
THE FUCKING BOSS IS JOHN ENTWISTLE!! THUNDERFINGER!!!
new and old boss
Fuck Yeah he is !!!!
Today is October 9th The Ox's birthday
John's roadie: "Is this enough amps for you boss?"
John: "Theres only half the factory there, chuck a few more on!"
Roadie: "Okay..." *goes to cry in a corner*
Haha
Wooouwww......a killer version............what a band............RIP John Entwistle (Tje Who is not the same without him).....
I've never heard this song until just now, but Entwistle HAS to be the GOAT of all bassists. It can't POSSIBLY come close.
Best song? I'm not sure - the Who have so many great ones, but this is certainly one of my favorites!
I love when John throws away the pick and starts REALLY jamming. (About 1:30)

This is great even better than the early performances RIP John
Best live performance of all time! Amazing
This is absolute perfection
Agreed!!!!!
What a fucking performance! This is heavy hard rock perfection!
The perfect band with the perfect best of the best.
J'étais en train d'écouter sans regarder je croyais que c'était Keith a la batterie zak est déchaîné très bon ( Guy platteau Marseille France)
Best. Rock bassist. Ever.
He plays the bass like a regular guitar, so amazing, never seen that before
What's really amazing to me is that these guys are in their late 50s here and are rocking harder than the vast majority of musicians half their age
the power of the who when they still had it. Now days i think they've lost it. Back when keith was still alive it was amazing!
This song is very funny! We miss you John!
@FFEMT152 hehehe i love that scene in Tommy film, in the pinball battle, where everyone is detroying instruments and getting wild, and he just stands there, playing his musical magic. The OX, for sure!
Love the piano here.
1:50 -> "Fuck that pick! I'm John Entwistle! I'll play with my 5 fingers!"
10 fingers by my count hehehe
John fantastic of course but Pete's power here lighting up the hall too sheer magic the lot of them Incredible!!!

The Bassplayer of all the modern times in rock, together with Jack Bruce!!!
Roger is definitely propping up Johns vocal’s during this…..but Johns bass is at the top of his game. He was the GOAT bassist, in my non bass playing opinion, for what it’s worth.
recently i was thinking about what to do on the 18th of December 2014.
Now i have decided on flying to London to see the WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I flew to London to see them at Hyde Park. Great show!
im sure you will remember all your life being at a Who concert.
one of those handfull of the greatest players who ever played in rock.
I cant get enough listenning that song....
John was the best
John Entwisle at clean hand yeeeeah!!!!!Thanks a lot !!!
I recently listened to several isolated bass tracks of Who songs, by John Entwistle. God, it is absolutely awesome.
I never know Entwhistle could sing...like wow!!
His last performance with The Who was at the Royal Albert Hall Feb. 2002. Not sure of the day. 2 years after this performance.
fantastic, just soo good
Happy Birthday July 7 2020 to the Ox aka Thunder fingers
Absolutely killed it! Awesome 👍
Awesome!

The HO is a total credit to rock and roll.
Bloody fab.

Listening to Pete, John, Roger, Ken: The WHO do not sound like the best rock band in the world - they sound like the ONLY one
Ken? You mean Zak
@@aidenneumann8990 Zak? You mean Keith (as best rock band in the world)
@eezy1972 Status Graphite Buzzard, discontinued after his death, but there is a very expensive Warwick version, you can see it on their website...
Amazing!!!!
Man. Zak and John are tearing it up!
Tremendous bass guitar playing
I remember reading a story that said as all hell brokr loose on stage around him,John stood and kept it all together for the sake of his musical pride.
Great drummer.....
9 thumbs down? gonna get my lead boots and start kicking some ass!!
GRAN EJECUCIÓN DE TODOS!!! ESPLÉNDIDO EL BAJO DE ENTWISTLE!! ZAK, FANTÁSTICO!!, MAGNIFICO SUPLENTE DE KEITH MOON!!
this song is so cool....!

カッコ良すぎるぜjohn entwistle!!!

Roger Daltry's wry boyish smile!
John, gênio!
Yes. That is how it is done. *clap clap clap
Legend
I just can't find any words to describe the greatness of John Entwistle, they don't exist in any lexis.
Top 10!
2:59-3:07 is just amazing. Lol
the who rocked!!, r.i.p. john an keith
no es que mi grupo favorito sea the who pero john entwistle sin duda es el mejor bajista de todos los tiempos su sonido era arrollador no conozco a un bajista que lo iguale o menos que lo supere

...My God!!!
Wicked!!!!!
Pete is on fire nowadays, he's really become a great guitarist indeed. However, nothing beats John's pick to finger transfer. Man, you just can make those fingers stop when they've started hammering.
John Entwistle is the GOAT bass guitarist...
That kid on the drums kicks -ss.
The Who's sound died when Ox did.
Earlier...when Moon died
I know Entwistle is currently in God mode, but look at Pete, HE"S ON FUCKING FIRE!!!
After 30 years: got it. 'Put on my LEAD boots.' Totally makes more sense than " red boots.' I'm a dummy,
I always thought it was, "gonna buy a cops car" but it's a faust car = fast with a British accent!
I missed Keith Moon in drums.
Zak Starkey. Ringo Starr's kid.
agree!
Pick: I'm Free
yikes....man I miss good rock'n roll talent.
vocals, writing, tourmanship, sound quality, And simply talent on the insturment.
john, RIP.
Townshend is on fire here
His last performance was in Las Vegas the night before he died.
Man that tour would have been epic.. ah well I guess they all were with the Who.
Prior to Moon croaking, yes, they were!
Entwistles playing always sounded like bubbling lava in a volcano!
They're all irreplaceable...but Zak Starkey is amazing here!
