I told my son that I loved a heavy handed bass player and he asked what do you mean and I told him just check out John Entwistle. That is as well as I could explain myself. Rip. Matthew.
The best thing about John is he's basically playing like that all the time, not just in solos, he never just follows the beat, yet everything he does fits in so perfectly
but he knew when to turn the intensity down and not 'show off' as much the legend had a god given talent and disipline he is my idol and always will be unfortunatly i wouldnt of had the oppotunity to meet and chat to him (excuse my spelling im pissed)
Thank you to whoever found this video in its entirety and re-uploaded it to TH-cam. I haven’t heard this full version of this masterpiece in 10-15 years
I've been fortunate enough to see The Who perform "live" in every decade since the 1970's. In 2006 and 2022, I was a bit worried, beforehand, about how they would perform, but there was no need for concern as each time they exceeded all expectations. Truly the greatest rock 'n roll band of all time, hands down.
As a young man I missed the who in their prime but the fact their music lives on and I know the names of entwistle, moon, daltrey and townshend better than anything this decade has produced says it all. True artists of their time and none of them will be forgotten yet work they produced is timeless!
@JeromeWade-lm8jh A fine drummer but as you know, Jones wasn't the best fit with The Who. Zak Starkey was taught to play the drums by Keith Moon himself!
I had the pleasure of seeing him playing this solo with The Who in 2000, great night, Joe Strummer supported them, both John and Joe both sadly missed ☹️

That camera angle from the headstock of John's bass was one of my dad's favorite things, he'd often tell me about it but now that I'm finally seeing it I understand why.
I saw them at Wembley Arena a couple of days earlier. Absolutely amazing gig. Pete Townshend had a cold and still played superbly. John's playing was enormous, and his solo has been imprinted on my memory. Roger was on perfect vocal form and looking cool in his, then 50s. Just a perfect gig. Thanks, chaps!! 😊
The Ox! Amazing! The older I gey andcthe more I watch tjos particular concert, I find myself thinking this may have been there best post-Moon performance ever. But since I've seen them live 20+ times, I'm not 100% certain on that, but close!
If the posted date of this performance IS correct...it would CERTAINLY qualify John UNDISPUTABLY as the "Greatest Rock Bass Player of All Time"...as he would have been DEAD for FIVE MONTHS at the time it was recorded!!
11:14 Pete Townsend isn’t exactly known for doling out much praise to others. Here, he is so genuinely amazed and laudatory of John. Really great to see!
Pete has never been one who really cared for solos, but even he had to be astonished with some of the stuff John Entwistle would play during the 5:15 solos throughout the 2000 tour. Roger, on the other hand, absolutely loved it, as you can see by his smiling applause.
I'm going to get shot for this but- I think his tone what that Buzzard blows dead goats. His action is set way too low. Fretbuzz Central. (His preference of course) That bass zero low end..
I agree. I love Entwhistle the man was a genius and he’s easily one of the finest bassist that ever lived. But the tone in this video isn{t great.(Playing is though)
Entwistle was a great bassist -- in his medium, like playing with the Who. Listening to this is like musical masturbation. It does nothing at all. I'd give it 4 thumbs down, if I couldn't give it 5. No-go John, you lose.
@@vinie3465 Hardly. I'm a hack bassist, & I know it (& I don't care). I just have fun. It's just annoying when you hear a great musician play something so non-musical.
John Entwistle is the greatest bass player to ever walk the face of this Earth. I hope I can one day achieve this level of skill.
Think so, boy? Your uncle would agree.
John Entwistle and Geddy Lee of Rush ....the who definitely a top 5 greatest band ever ... I seen them in 82 cotton bowl Dallas
@@jimmy9802-t8jand Chris Squire👍
And he wrote Cousin Kevin's song in "Tommy" which is not at all an easy melody!
@@jimmy9802-t8j In rock. Many jazz players are better.

John Entwhistle invented the selfie stick.

The Ox is a legend. Essentially the Buddy Rich of bass.
Even in his moments of fast riffing chaos, he keeps near perfect time. Keith Moon wouldn't have worked with a lesser bass player.

Marching Soldier Entwistle. Never let the cohesive group down. Fantastic!
John Entwistle The Legend... miss you so much,..

John Entwistle has to be one of the absolute best bass guitarist ever
“One of”???!
No one else is worthy to hold his pick

No other bass player ever could match this.
Absolute brilliance from ALL of them. THE best version of 5:15 I've seen. 👏👏👏👏🤘👍👍
Miss ya John! The Who isn't the same without you, Thunderfingers!
Damn that bass sure can play an entwistle
John Entwistle is pure legend
Perhaps the greatest bass solo in rock history
Miss you John Entwistle

Wonderful
it's been 23 years since this record
and remains original and impossible to copy 🤘🤘🤘
He approached every song like it was a constant bass solo. So smooth.
John played lead bass - that's why Pete used to play more rhythm than lead guitar.
It just amazes me what first class musicians are capable of.

Best live concert ever!
Owned this DVD, the Ox solo was the best!
Is there a version that is not cropped down from 4:3 to fit widescreen out there? Missing all the finger work on the bass neck cam!
Great Stuff
yeh, rock on!!
The motherfucking OX.
this is a great show
beat live concert ever!!!
Gracias a John Entwistle nace Billy Sheehan o Stuart Hamm, sólo por nombrar a los más emblemáticos pero Thunderfingers fue el verdadero pionero.
unreal,classic
Gotta have the horns.

I miss Keith Moon
Date is wrong. It's 27/11/2000 not 2002.
Yes. Entwistle died in June of 2002.
You got the date wrong, because john Pentecostals (bass player)
Died on 27/06/2002.
7:47 to 8:05 sounds like someone locked a 400 pound bumblebee in a room and it started tearing the place to shreds.
Yes , John. Is the best bassinet . And mid guitarist.
Bass guitar player!!
Is that Zack on drums?
Yes the great Zac Starkey.
Yes, Zach on drums.
I spelled that wrong .
Who is that guy on the piano?
Is the date correct at the beginning? John expired in June 2002?
It's incorrect. This was in November 2000. You are correct poor old John died in June 2002.
Is that Chris Stanton on piano?
😭😔
Moon´s missing...
What bass was John ent whistle playing?
An Entwistle - John built most of his bass guitars.
He was playing a Warwick Buzzard this show. I believe it was a series 2 but I could be wrong.
These shows must've been a trip to see. I wish it was this good when I went to see them because it was the only time I fell asleep at a concert.
The devil booze...
Old guy on the bass...what a showoff! 😅😮 Doesn't even move. 😂🎸🎺🎤 !!!
This was in 2000 not 2002. Poor John was dead by November 2002 so not sure why you even added that lmao
Effortless

And the capo?
