    At this point, I am stunned by the continued purchases of brand new ICE cars in Germany, that cost essentially the same as a Model 3 long range. You keep seeing them. Why? They're already obsolete. Superb review anyway. The other things to add with the Model 3 are that it can have a tow bar fitted (900kg + 100kg) and it has class-leading usable luggage capacity. When the Y comes, this will be doubly as significant. Towing is 1600kg, and the load space, with all seats up, is a good 1/3 bigger than the Model 3 by all accounts. The German car industry is facing disaster as things stand.

    After watching this video, I'm missing my German colleagues. I've worked very intimately with colleagues in Germany for the past three years, and I have a deep appreciation in the German way of thinking. At first, I was put off by the very direct and critical feedback, but I realized that there is no malice behind it. The straightforward way of communication is excellent, especially for technical topics. Thanks for doing what you do!

      Great review, Thomas! I'd like to see you do another test of the Model 3 Performance with the new track update....testing it around the track. I'm not sure if you're aware of it. But with the performance track update, you can send all the power to the rear wheels, or do 40/60%, etc. I'd love to see you smoke those rear tires. Lol.

    Great review! I find that these touchscreen-centric cars are a lot harder for tall people because we have to sit so much further away from the dash. My current vehicle provides Android Auto with a controller knob on the center tunnel and it's a huge improvement compared to constantly having to bend forward and hunt for small touch targets on screen.

    Because of Irish taxes I couldn't afford the LR or P. Bought an SR+ and love it, and especially the vegan interior; so soft and comfortable. Much bigger than most think.
    The other reason for the SR+ is it is lighter, more efficient in everyday driving and on a smallish island like Ireland I didn't need the LR especially with Superchargers and the fast charging.
    I actually love the Aerowheels.
    The SR+ also picks up speed better at motorway speeds, seems to have more available torque than the dual motor or maybe just the lower weight.

  • @benjacobs2560
    @benjacobs2560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I really enjoyed this review. I drove a model 3 and I found the seats really comfortable but I am 5 9‘. My concern is having the entire car run through a tablet. The picture quality of the screen is really good but tablets don’t last a very long time. I don’t want to be in a situation where I can’t drive my car because the flat screen is kaputt. My other concern is panel gaps because it’s indicative of how the rest of the car was built. All that being said, I would still take this over an ID3 without hesitation. The acceleration is amazing and is something everybody needs to experience to believe. Also, when you spend a lot of money on a car you‘re not buying it to drive from point A to point B. Your buying it because of the way it makes you feel and this car makes you feel like you’re driving something from the future which is undeniably exciting.

    • @Chris-zq8qv
      @Chris-zq8qv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris I‘m not worried about the screen after two years. Even the most unreliable cars last 5 years without major problems. I’m worried about it after 10 years. I just had to replace my 4 year old ipad, am I going to have to do the same with my car?

    • @Chris-zq8qv

    I own a 2020 model 3 LR AWD and this is a great review I think. The 18 inch wheels are definitely better given the rather hard suspension (it was also hard on my Golf IV I thought). This EV can also charge super fast (ionity, Tesla chargers) and this is one of the biggest advantages compared to other EVs. Sometimes I’d almost like it to be slower to justify a longer break:).

You go Long Range and you get the glass roof, better sound system and the dual motors and you pick either black or white interior and a 19" wheels, that's it. You get sick if you visit Volvocars website and try to spec your car, you will be lost of how much shit you can add and you just ask, what the heck am I going to buy if all these things are options and not standard?

    Interesting car, inspite of all its flaws and positives, not something I will buy. Why?
    1. No charging infrastructure in my living locality. Agree, not a problem of the manufacturer but the market itself is not mature enough, period.
    2. Cost! This thing costs like a BMW 4 series or an Audi A5 but gives me a Honda or a Suzuki in terms of quality.
    3. Batteries: I work in this field and I know a little bit about the extraction of minerals and its recycling. I am not fully convinced that it is the future of auto-motion. Better suited for early adopters. But, a step in the right direction.
    4. Recuperation/Energy regen: Even my 3 series (3er) does recover energy if I let go of the accelerator (a car made in 2012 !) Tesla gains more, agreed but nothing that the ICE engines are wasting.
    5. One touch screen for everything --> No thanks. The logic behind this is that in future, autonomous driving will take over and we will have all time on earth to play around. Until that happens, I prefer to have switches and knobs.
    6. All those horror stories of Tesla repair costs, should something break and logical fallacies like in case of phone getting stolen (effectively car key is also gone!), easy hackability of the security system (not that other manufacturers are immune) but relying solely on digital methods isn't my cup of tea.
    7. The whole idea behind Tesla is to provoke and intimidate conventional manufacturers to start thinking in this direction and I would say Tesla has succeeded in that to a great extent. Musk himself knows for sure that once the big players enter the EV world, his car will be just another competitor but his idea is not to be the market leader but to make disruptive technologies. Hats off to Musk for this effort in the right direction.

      There are buttons and wheels on the steering wheel which handle the most common functions and also change with context so you can voice command and then use the wheels or buttons on the steering wheel to do the change. Any car with buttons and knobs feels way more distracting and confusing to the visual system by comparison. Like in a regular car you remember where a few knobs are that you use often but then all the clutter works against that habitual memory. Having controls at your fingertips and then the rest is less cluttered / more easily seen in a glance, is a bonus, not a hindrance.

      designers just wanna put biggest wheels on because they look cooler. And often cool looks sells more vehicles than finding out later that it is an uncomfortable ride :) That's why we usually advise for wheel sizes that still look nice but still offer comfort. So not the smallest, but also not the biggest. However smallest rim size will always offer the best comfort. It's a look vs comfort trade-off

    Great review again, many thanks. So much better than the magazine reviews. Very good point about ride quality on bigger wheels. Our UK roads are full of potholes and getting worse by the year. Yet manufacturers/marketing insist on pushing ever larger and lower profile wheels. Fortunately I quite like the standard aero wheels on this car and 18" is already plenty big enough for a car of this proportion.
    I also really appreciate an open minded critique of the minimalist high tech interior. A lot of people dismiss it as being "cheap" and have an irrational hatred of the iPad style touch interface. But I know now from two years driving a Model X (your review on that car was excellent too BTW) that it simply works much better than a traditional dash and allows way more flexibility in future software upgrades. But I'm also with you on the rather pointless centre console, especially with its gloss black finish. I think they could have done better there too.

      I would have preferred a hatchback too but there is still a large market for the traditional saloon layout too. Actually I think the reason Tesla probably chose to do the saloon first is because it is more aerodynamically efficient and this being a critical factor in the early stages of range limited electric cars. But the Model Y is probably the version for you and will be a bigger seller globally. Tesla are also still relatively production limited too, so there's not much pressure for them to make the most popular variants first. They are still working their way from top down in that respect.

      wrsilver Which takes longer than turning a dial. For me, the biggest issue is moving wiper control from the stalks to the screen. Being able to switch the wipers on to full speed instantaneously is safety critical. At present you can only do a single wipe by pressing the button on the stalk. Imagine passing a truck on the motorway and it throws up a lot of water from a puddle- you need to clear the screen straight away, and the last thing you want it to have to take one hand of the wheel and look at icons on a screen.

    For me, Model 3 is like ready-made, canned food. It has its advantages, but it simply lacks the qualities that I would like to have if I drive a lot. In my eyes - cool experience car for a test, nice for daily short journeys, but far from an experienced carmaker when it comes to safety, comfort and complexity.
    The issue of efficiency has yet to be proven. An electric car does not only exist while driving, but must be built and disposed of. And here the fun flips. My various PU leather items age really badly after 5-10 years, with the plastic mesh that lies underneath the textured surface being exposed in high friction areas and stuff. Monsieur B. it will never replace good leather though. Leather wears and ages, but can be refinished, repaired, nourished and therefore maintained for decades. Synthetic leather simply cannot be restored in the same way- cracks cannot be filled, the surface cannot be re-dyed, it cannot be restored to its original suppleness if it starts to dry out and crack. Perhaps there will be an aftermarket leather option in time. I'd rather have a quality cloth than synthetic leather.

The synthetic leather in my Model X is far nicer than the real leather in my 911 which creased up and cracked in less than 30k miles, despite all the fancy leather treatments. All I have to do to keep the Tesla interior looking good is use baby wipes to remove any marks. It may not ultimately last forever, but it's a lot less hassle than looking after real leather and actually feels softer and doesn't crease. Earlier Teslas actually did have real leather and it was pretty ropey too.
