  • In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks”, I visit Hurst Castle which is located South of Keyhaven on the coast just inside the New Forest National Park. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I park my car at a car park at Keyhaven and start my adventure by taking the little ferry, from the harbour, that goes directly to Hurst Castle which is situated at the far end of Hurst Spit.
    After investigating the lighthouse nearby, I head on in to the castle and have a lot of fun exploring what is in fact a very historic building. There had been some storm damage to the castle 18 months previously which meant that part of it was “off limits” to visitors - but the admission price had been reduced slightly to reflect the position.
    After a brief stop at the castle cafe, I head back to Keyhaven along the magnificent Hurst Spit which provides some splendid views of the Isle of Wight & the Solent. The total distance of walking was just over 2 miles (for those that prefer not to take on the shingle walk of the Spit, there is always the option of taking the ferry back!
    Both the ferry & the castle are dog friendly.

    What a delightful video. Really very relaxing to watch. Logan's confidence really built on the ferry. He looked like he had a lovely time finished off with an ice cream 🍦

      Thanks Angela. Yes, I think that once Logan found his "sea legs" he quite enjoyed being at the front of the boat & getting a good view of everything!

    You did it again Dave. Enjoyed the walk and the history and Logan was so good on the ferry. Loved the history on the Lighthouses. All was great.

    Fantastic and fascinating video. I bypassed both the ferry and the spit on my recent walk from New Milton to Lymington but definitely would like to make a return trip to take ferry and see castle. Logan was quite the salty sea dog once he got used to being aboard! Some complex filming there too and probably lots of ascents and descents of the steps to get all the different shots!

      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jean. I did have some help with the filming on that one - especially with the ferry scenes! The ferry was fun and the castle, even though parts of it were closed due to the storm damage, was an interesting visit.

      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I remember being able to see the Spinnaker tower from Lepe beach so I guessed that, on a very clear day, you might be able to see it from Hurst Castle (although I certainly would need binoculars these days!).

    Fabulous Mr Logan, you found your sea legs quickly there. My mums old greyhound hated water, wouldn't even step in a puddle until one day when he mistook the duckweed for grass and ran straight in... He loved it after that, couldn't keep him out, don't know what he would have thought of being on a boat though! Has yer mate Dave got a 'cameraman' to help him now? I'm sure I saw some scenes pan around as he walked through, clever trick if you can do that with a tripod! Thank you both, your work gets better and better.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Logan is Ok with water but only goes in up to his chest! It was his first time "at sea" (!) and it didn't seem to take him too long to get his confidence - luckily the sea was calm!

    @angelanewman5566 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks Dave, that was very interesting. I've been there several times, but you shared lots of information I didn't know about. I was a bit concerned that Logan would find it uncomfortable walking all that way back over the gravel, but he seemed to manage very well. Can't see him in doggie boots somehow!

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Angela. The shingle on the very top of the Spit was fairly well compacted (not like Chesil beach for example) so it was OK for him. He rather liked the ferry crossing - once he found his "sea legs".

    Very interesting walk Dave. There's a whole chain of these Henrician castles along the coast. People always say they never saw action but thats a testament to their deterrent efect. By the way, were you auditioning a new camera operator today?

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I needed an "assistant camera operative" for a few of the scenes!

  • @lionelmarytravels6003

    Well done Dave. Lovely walk and we were surprised how long Logan stayed in the water. He was very quick up the stairs in the castle too. How did he manage on the way down? Did you have someone else with you at times? I know you camera can probably track you, but when you got off the ferry, surely someone was doing the filming.
    We’ve been to Hurst Castle a couple of times and many years ago I began walking along the Spit from the Lymington end, but as the castle never appeared to get any closer, I turned back.
    Altogether, that was a well made video, full of interesting information which I wasn’t aware of.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lionel. Logan quite likes a long paddle in the water - especially on a hot day! He was fine going down the stairs although, like his Dad, takes it carefully! In that film, I did have someone else to hold the camera at times because I knew there were going to be some scenes when it would look better from afar (ie the ferry scenes etc).
