- In this episode of my series “Walks in the New Forest”, I take a 4.5 mile Autumnal walk from Longcross Plain (just to the North East of Fritham) & make my way around around three New Forest Inclosures - Coppice of Linwood, King's Garn Gutter & Salisbury Trench. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car at the Forestry England (free) car park at Longcross Plain & after checking out Longcross Pond, made my way into my first inclosure - the Coppice of Linwood Inclosure.
For most of my walk I followed garvel tracks (authorise cycle routes) but from time to time, I was able to shoot off deeper into the woodland for an exploration.
The Autumnal colours of the leaves in the woodland were amazing and I passed over at least three enchanting streams that were in full flow after recent rains.
During the video, I gave a couple of readings from the 1934 book “Walking In The New Forest” by Joan Begbie.
Coming out of the Coppice of Linwood, I had a quick look at Gibbet Wood -a small parcel of woodland that was once home to an insect called the New Forest Cicada. Alas none have been seen since the 1990's.
A video of a slightly different species of Cicada made by David Attenborough can be seen at • Periodical Cicadas Ove...
After visiting a pony pound just outside the Coppice of Linwood, I head into my second inclosure - King's Garn Bottom Inclosure.
My final leg of the walk took me through the Salisbury Trench Inclosure back to my car.
My final destination was The Royal Oak pub in Fritham (one of the oldest pubs in the New Forest) for some light refreshment.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.
That was sooo beautiful! The colours were amazing!
It looked like you and Logan were in an oil painting!
Great to watch Logan's zoomies!😊
I love Autumn. Thank you
Ah. Pond or a lake? There is no demarcation between the two.
Hi Dave. Enjoyed seeing Logan's zoomies. I bet he would be good at the Fly Ball competition at Crufts!
Thanks Antonio. Yes, I think that Flyball would be just his sort of thing!
Amazing walking adventure in the woods with stunning beauty and Colors and wonderful streams
Thank you Keith.
Another brilliant video..thanks Dave...and Logan
Thank you Del & indeed thanks for watching.
beautiful autumn colours in the New Forest so enchanting 😍
Nature can certainly provide some amazing colours at times!
Keep it up Dave and Logan, brilliant & lovely walk. Ron.
Thank you Ron. :)
A lovely part of the New Forest and even more spectacular in autumn! I must get back out on my bike and ride those tracks
I think that Autumn is the best time to visit that particular part of the New Forest.
The forest looks mysterious and wonderful with the sun peaking through the beautiful leaves on the trees. Just a glorious day .. perfect for a walk. I could sit and listen to the water and may take a nap😴 It looked so colorful Dave ! I could almost feel the warmth from the sun. ☀️Thank you Dave and Logan. 👏🏻
Thank you Melissa. It was so peaceful in all of that woodland.
@@DaveFord I am sure it was Dave. You did such a good job of showing everything at it’s most beautiful.
Lovely forest
Thank you. :)
Back in the 1970s as an enthusiastic Scout I undertook a fair amount of orienteering in and around Fritham. As a painter (not of houses) I’d half forgotten how stunning parts of The New Forest were in the autumn.
The colours (in the sunshine) were amazing that day.
Stunning autumnal colours with the blue sky. Would it be fair to say you enjoy the New Forest the most of all your various walking locations?
I love the variety of walks - Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire & West Sussex. Certainly I am very fond of the New Forest!
Glorious autumn colours in places there Dave. First time i've heard the small streams referred to as a gully, but in truth, that's what they are. Lovely video once again, but as we now know, sunny days became a rarity in January and February. I'm wanting to get out filming again, but the weather is not very encouraging.
Thanks Lionel. Those sunny days cannot come soon enough!
Some lovely colour in this video after a very monochrome February! I also akways learn a lot about the New Forest from your videos. Thank you.
Thank you Jean. We seemed to have quite a "short" Autumn last year (it took a while to come!) & so it was great to be able to get out and film on a sunny day.
What a lovely day for a walk Dave. I liked your readings, thanks for such a nice walk.
Thank you Peter. Joan has such a beautiful way of writing.
Looks like a lovely area of the Forest Dave. Great words from Joan Begbie !
Joan had a great way with words for sure!
Pure poetry! Thanks for sharing, Dave&Logan
Thank you Hannu. :)
Lovely colours on a lovely walk Dave. Good luck at Crufts next week, hope to see you sporting a "Best in Show" rosette in a couple of weeks time, and hopefully the dog'll win something too (can't remember if it was Logan or Fiver you were showing). Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Yes, it is Logan who will be at Crufts. It will be his last ever show (he retires from the show ring afterwards!) so it is going to be quite emotional. It is the 6th time he has been there &indeed he did get a 4th place (out of 20) a few years ago but I am not expecting too much this time!
Think positive Dave, you never know!
lovely video this week keep it up love the walks
Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
