  • I changed my front struts bushing and started getting a clunking/knocking noise coming from the front end. This is my diagnosis and solution to the issue.

Good video m8, a small tip would be very careful when working on the ground as small stones and grit can get stuck to the grease and end up in the bearing. Just put a bit of cardboard down and good to go. Good luck bud 😊👍👍

10:03 I disagree; I invite you to drive from Brooklyn to Queens of NYC and tell me again if your roads are shit compared to ours. I've already spend a little over $2k on wheels/tires due to potholes tearing my car up -- and the city has a way of not paying.

Hi buddy! I just went to my garage at 5 a.m to check the Febi sport set (Made in Germany) that I bought for my 2013 Golf TDI: there was No play whatsoever...snug and solid like the OEM. Happy with my purchase: pricey, but high quality...I am doing the whole suspension on my MK : Koni Str.T struts & shocks, H&R springs, fEBI spring perch uppers, Febi & sachs struts and shocks mounts, Febi/Rein sport bump stops...the whole set!

Makes sense after I replaced 3 sets of monroe fool strut assembly. Never again! Before I figured it out I replaced my whole front end... And then I find out they had this problem for a while now. Don't waste your time on full strut assembly. Or be ready to replace upper strut mount and bearings.

Did you have to take the cv axle out? Taking the control arm out isnt enough? Im asking because I took the bolt out but the cv is stuck on the knuckle... so if I dont have to take it out would be great.

It's not the bearing slop, it is the design of the strut mount itself. Regardless, changing it out fixes the issue.

My 2011 TDI makes a clunk on take off and sometimes during deceleration. I have stock everything, except the dog-bone mount (HPA). I'm wondering if both the bearing and the mount go bad, or if it's just one of the parts. I plan to buy OEM, but they sell them separately. That suggests that only one or the other goes bad. What's the likely culprit?

dude I also live in Hawaii, on Oahu. yes our roads fucking suck. seems like the state is constantly working on them but they stay the same, or a year goes by and the road they fixed goes right back to shit. #jobsecurity but yeah man, I drive a 94' passat glx 2.8L VR6 with 262 cams, 3" intake and exhaust. running into some lean problems, but being an obd1 its hard to diagnose exactly the culprit of my problem. I also have a bunch of cracked vacuum lines that need to be replaced, but i've been thinking of deleting the SAI and EVAP systems. I run rough on cold start, and after 3k-4k RPM the CEL light comes on, but goes away after i release the throttle. you got any ideas as to what it could be? If you ever wanna link up and car cruise and take pics lmk! I live in town.

Has this continued to make no more knocking? Wife has a 2013 A3 that we have been having bad knocking and I thought it was the strut linkage as the small boot was split. Replaced it and the noise was gone for a few miles then came back. Now I kind of wonder if this is the problem. Mine is an ECS racing model that are black as well. Probably the same manuf that yours are just labeled different. It knocks bad when coasting on a bad road. If braking or accelerating the noise is almost gone which leads me to believe that it is some part that when it is under tension while braking or accel it causes enough tension to "snug" things up a bit but while coasting there is no tension and things are more loose.

Sorry for the late reply here, but to answer your question the answer is yes, yes the problem is gone and has stayed gone with the new OEM bushings.

2014 VW GLI. Replaced front stock Fuchs setup with Bilstein B4 shocks (amazon), SKF bearing and Lemforder from FCP Euro. Had my non VW local guy install today. Also experiencing a knock/clunk in my front passenger side shock area. And all my dashlights are going off which looks like a bad connection/possible replacement of the wheel speed sensor after installing shocks. The hits keep coming but they won't get me down. Thanks for sharing your video. I should have used your drop test on my SKF/Lemforder setup before installing it.

I had near enough the same problem with new struts and aftermarket strut tops. First test drive was terrible, got home sprayed where I could with silicone spray and it still knocked, rattled, and squeaked.....the next morning all the noises were gone but had a bit of spring boinging from one side......can't stop it, I may try some spray grease into bearing ring.....

Im having the same noise problem, but i have the oem bushings and strut mounts. i just installed eibach 1 inch lowering springs to the stock shock. I'll see if theres any play in the bushing, but also it looks like you got the strut off without removing the entire rotor and everything...which is what the instructions told me to do for my spring installation. How do you do this? THANKS!

Great video! I’m having sort of a similar problem. A shop installed my VWR springs with new mounts and bearings but there is popping and banging noise from the driver’s side. There is play in the strut assembly as I can move it up and around a little bit by hand with the car jacked up and wheel off. The shop used a cheap (at least $ wise) OE style replacement but either installed the mount in the wrong direction or there is play between the mount and bearings like you demonstrated. I’m going with the mount and bearing clearance is too large. I am curious if your mounts in the video, to replace the 034’s, are VW branded or an OEM equivalent?
