Kendrick is like Pink Floyd to me. Deep and full of meaning. Kendrick can bring me to tears or get me hyped. A true artist who I would love to meet just to say thank you to. Thank you for the video and giving it more than 8 minutes.
"Sing about me" is one of the most powerful songs I ever heard. One of two song in life that made me cry. Kendrick is definitely a once in a lifetime artist. More life k.dot!✊🏿 This was a wikked piece. Big up to Polyphonics.
Myself included. I compared it too much to Section.80 in the sense that a lot of the songs on Section.80 have a very radio-friendly sound (for me) while the lyricism is very dense but I thought a more simpler approach was implored in the songwriting process for most of the songs on DAMN. That's just me though.
I always felt like GKMC was Kendrick's testimony of how he came to faith as one of the central themes. In many ways it is a much more spiritual album than DAMN imo
It's something truly incredible when an artist can present his humanity in such a raw, unfiltered, and artistic way. It's something transcendental when an artist can do all that and become a hero in the eyes of the oppressed. Great video man, thank you for this.
Kendrick (along with Cudi) are the reason I love hip hop. I was a strict metal head beforehand and hated anything rap. Then I heard “A.D.H.D.” and it just opened it up a whole new world to me.
This was a great analysis of Kendrick's career. The type of reflection and great art that he produces is very attractive and sonically pleasing to listen to.
So sad to see this series come to an end. These have been some of my favorite videos from you, you started great but over the past years it's been so wonderful to see you grow and improve. You're my youtuber of the decade and I love you.
This was actually a really amazing breakdown. Kendrick has been my favorite rapper for a while, but as time fades other rappers have burst into the scene which has kind of made me question his placed on my list (J.Cole in particular). But a breakdown like this remind you of how brilliant those older works are. You even point out some easter eggs that I totally missed like how in the FEAR he addresses the fears he felt in different parts of life in each verse. I mean, you really just reminded me why Kendrick is so special to me, so i'm about to listen to all his projects back to back in the next few days. Here's a sub! Just thinking about how crazy his next project will be.
GKMC was more influential and iconic of the times than Damn. Damn had some more mainstream tracks but GKMC will stand the test of time and is a more in depth listening experience that will define the decade

Kendrick is in the pantheon of hip hop greats. He's not misguided when he puts himself alongside Em, Hov, Andre 3000 and Nas. He's easily the best rapper of this decade. EASILY!!!!!
achronos178 The answer to your confusion is that “pen game” isn’t the only aspect of artistry, and J. Cole doesn’t have to be a super-complex lyricist to be considered among other great artists. He may not be as intricate of a rapper as Kendrick, in a TECHNICAL sense, but his music can still hit you a certain way because he has other qualities that make up being a great artist. It’s honestly that simple.
J. Cole has a more mainstream style and it gets a lot of listeners. J. Cole has easier stories to connect to when speaking generally about the masses, and it's easier to emotionally connect with J. Cole's songs. And when people feel they have a personal connection with the writers music and with them they become their favourites. And the GOAT status doesn't mean anything more than ''my favourite artist'' nowadays. So he gets called the best a lot.

TruMusic89 In terms of Drake being the main reason rappers are more emotional on their tracks because of him. Although he contributed, I disagree that he’s the main reason, 808 and heartbreaks birthed Drake’s signature sound especially So Far Gone and Take Care and influenced many other artists that debuted this decade like Future, Uzi, Travis Scott, Juice Wrld etc. Drake is an amazing artist but he adapts well to trends that other artists start, rather than stating them himself I.e Kanye, Migos, Weeknd etc. Cudi also deserves credit for rappers tapping into their emotions more based on his contributions to 4 songs on 808 and heartbreaks as well as Man on the moon. Migos and Thug have been the most influential hip hop artists in the past 4-5 years. Also Kendricks GKMC, TPAB and DAMN have influenced culture and artists from multiple genres, not just hip hop.

Yes. Can't agree more. Growing up with progressive metal. Got a hand Kendrick album. Genius. So much input
I'm a 51 yo that grew up with with hard rock; I am loving the music of Kendrick and am excited that we have such amazing talent well into the Twenty-first century.
The intro of hood politics is the best off any Kendrick album
the amount of control over his flow Kendrick displays in that song is insane
Hood politics itself is one of my all-time favorites
He's smart for putting the vocal behind it as well making it impossible to sample
Facts my top 10 Kendrick Lamar song
"Ain't nothing new but a flu of new Demo-Crips and Re-Bloodicans. Red state vs a Blue state, which one you governin'... " One of the best bars on TPAB.
The others have had me so hype for this one! Kendrick is one of the most influential artists of our generation.
Yall sleep on 'u' by Kendrick that song is amazing
U is arguably Kdot's Bohemian Rhapsody
Shoutout to the Dissect Podcast. Highly recommended to those who really wanna get deep into Kendrick’s thought process within TPAB and Damn.
Kendrick is like Pink Floyd to me. Deep and full of meaning. Kendrick can bring me to tears or get me hyped. A true artist who I would love to meet just to say thank you to.
Thank you for the video and giving it more than 8 minutes.
I didn't live on the time of Pink Floyd or The Beatles, but I'm happy... I carry all their discography on my pocket and I'm living Kendrick unfolding.
Same!
"Sing about me" is one of the most powerful songs I ever heard. One of two song in life that made me cry.
Kendrick is definitely a once in a lifetime artist. More life k.dot!✊🏿
This was a wikked piece. Big up to Polyphonics.
Oooo I'm excited for this one.
He's a poet, The best of our generation and I'm so glad to be alive at the same time as him
For me he's deepest song is between sing about me and fear
I agree!
the blacker the berry and how much a dollar cost both pretty deep imo
tpab is album of the decade period
Nah
@@MichaelGreenOfficial Yah. Either tpab or MBDTF
My beautiful dark twisted fantasy
It’s top 3
@@stevensanchez2032 yes very strong contender, but i think tpab has more musical and lyrical substance even the social commentary
Everyone was putting down DAMN, but that album is really good. I think people judge it based on the singles rather than the entirety
Myself included. I compared it too much to Section.80 in the sense that a lot of the songs on Section.80 have a very radio-friendly sound (for me) while the lyricism is very dense but I thought a more simpler approach was implored in the songwriting process for most of the songs on DAMN. That's just me though.
I highly recommend Dissect Podcast he is analyzing Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. it's amazing
@@IllDawgable DAMN. is extremely complex Dissect Podcast help me so much
🤔 Huh ?! Everyone loved damn !
The album is ALLRIGHT but good kid and TPAB are better
the amount of research and preparation for this video is truly underrated.
I always felt like GKMC was Kendrick's testimony of how he came to faith as one of the central themes. In many ways it is a much more spiritual album than DAMN imo
Kendrick is the only artists to consistently release my fav album. From GKMC to TPAB to DAMN. I haven’t stopped listening since 2013 lol
Of all of the music video essays on TH-cam, this has one of the most coherent structures and well-written scripts. Well done.
Mortal man still gives me chills everytime... damn
This video is so long. And I'm so grateful for that.
Just thinking about how crazy his next project will be.
this and volksgeist's video on kendrick are among my favorite video essays of all time. keep it up
GKMC was more influential and iconic of the times than Damn. Damn had some more mainstream tracks but GKMC will stand the test of time and is a more in depth listening experience that will define the decade
I think DAMN. is his best album and probably his most iconic album.
@@antwahnredding2175 there is no world where damn is kendricks best album. Its a really good album, but he has put the bar so high with GKMC and TPAB that there is basically no way he tops those. My favorite is probably GKMC bcs it was the first hiphop album i ever listened to and because the lyrics on there are the most emotional. plus the album never loses replayability. That said i believe his objectively best album is without a doubt TPAB.
@@mariasitumbeko6643 the album is really good, if any newer artist would have come out with this project as his debut people would have been all over it, but kendrick set the bar so high that its basically impossible to top it
M.A.A.D City is my favourite song of the decade. The second half just captures kendrick's pure fear and paranoia its amazing
Sing about me and U gives me chills still
No mention of the Black Panther Album. A great sound track on one of the biggest movies of this generation. Cultivated by Kendrick.
Love that album
Never clicked so fast on a video.
It genuinely confuses me how one man can have so much talent. Kendrick Lamar blows my mind every time I listen to him.
I exclaimed “YES!” when I saw this video in my notifications.
Great vid, Kendrick definitely won the 2010s, to Pimp A Butterfly is an incredible album. Shocked there were 15 seconds of For Free clean enough for you to use!
That is not what section 80 was about. He had a song about 2 girls who became bi sexual but that is not what the whole album is about
Haven't listened to section 80 what was it about only songs I heard from it was rigamortis n backseat freestyle
That's the central storyline of that album, there's like 4 songs on it about them not one lol
@@thatguy5720 its about a couple things. its about how in section 80 everybody is different but thats ok, fuck your ethnicity. Its also about different types of people you meet in those areas, things you see and about how growing up in those areas at that time affected that generation. Its a good album, if u like kendrick u shud listen to it.
@@questallcaps6432 its not the central storyline.
That guy _Backseat Freestyle_ isn’t on _Section.80,_ it’s on _GKMC._
"How many accolades do I need to block denial" from FEAR might be the lyric that made me think the most in my entire life. That one line changed my perspective on how I regarded myself.
watching this now in june of 2020 tho... this video aged like fine wine
This is absolutely a great video. This over see’s kendrick’s career and how wonderful and thought proving is his work.
I’d argue that Kendrick dropped back-to-back classics with GKMC and TPAB, not TPAB and DAMN. GKMC has Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst, the best song of the decade and probably the best rap song of all time
I’m a simple man, I see Kendrick & I click
Im a Metalhead, always been, but I have to say, TPAB is the album of the decade and it aint even close
Please make more of these. I know it’s supposed to be just a series on the 2010’s, but please make more. This series was fantastic!
KDOT is a legend!
Kendrick is one of my fav artists ever, thanks for this
Dude, you just put up
a master piece!
One of the best content
in 2019 to me.
Thank you so much for
contributing to the movement
of good material on this platform!
Job very well done!
probably my new favorite youtuber. Editting is crazy good, and story telling is amazing!
Spotify told me I've listened to TPAB 500 times as of today lol
To pimp a butterfly is the greatest album of the decade! What a classic CD
Kendrick collabd with 3 of the other artists in this series
Bad Blood (Music Video Version) with Taylor
The Nile with Beyoncé
No More Parties in LA wiyh Kanye
and has inspired Blackstar by David Bowie, in his own words
ice bear
Buried alive>>>> no more parties in LA
freedom with bey as well !
@@najualb You're right i totally forgot freedom, i don't even remember his verse on it ×-×
Been waiting for this one the most out of all 5
How Robbie rotten shaped the 2010’s
Karl Stefansson*
He was number one.
Dying
Been waiting weeks for this upload!!! Had to do Kendrick last?? I couldnt wait. Great list man.
Could you do a video about King Gizzard and the lizard wizard?
Yes please
That WOULD be cool
Could you do a video about Angelik 2 the Core. That album is awesome
You can watch Middle 8's video in the meantime
@@EclecticoIconoclasta y you do dis. Corey Feldman is a modern genius
Can’t wait for “How Kendrick Lamar Shaped the 2020s”
Never gonna happen
@@tbj4855This aged quite a bit
Nice job bro my favorite of the videos
Crazy how Dr. Dre has been interwoven into the history of Hip-Hop. From NWA, to Tupac, to Snoop Dogg, to Eminem, to 50 Cent and to Kendrick. GOATs.
Boy, the 2010's have been rough. At least we had Kendrick. Artist of the decade, no doubt.
I grew up on classic rock and then discovered jazz and fusion . I loved to hate rap but my kids loved rap so because. I love my kids I listened to rap With an open heart and mind. I grew to appreciate artists like Kendrick Lamar today I’m a fan. I see the artistry and creativity .
What other rappers do you like?
Try kanye, he's amazing too, listen to the albums in chronological order.
Warren Rose
xxxtentacion Kanye west to name a few
I love xxxtentacion music since he had a diverse discography. And kanye too cause of his creativity and timeless feel.
That was an amazing pentology, had no idea I'll learn so much about what seems to be so straight forward! Will there be some sort of conclusion and reflection about the decade overall?
Your editing is always 🔥
As a rock and roll fan I hope lamar uses some floyd sounds in his next piece of work
Duckworth will forever be one of my Kendrick Lamar songs.
A video on how FKA twigs impacted music with the release of LP1 and how she completely changed her sound and fused elements of Opera, Avant Garde Pop and Alternative RnB with experimental production would be cool
Kendrick is in the pantheon of hip hop greats. He's not misguided when he puts himself alongside Em, Hov, Andre 3000 and Nas. He's easily the best rapper of this decade. EASILY!!!!!
I still dont get how people put Jcole near Kendrick i love them both but Jcoles pen game is nowhere near Kendricks.
achronos178 The answer to your confusion is that “pen game” isn’t the only aspect of artistry, and J.
So he gets called the best a lot.
because j cole alot easier for people to relate to
But Kendrick doesn’t go for that, Instead, he gives his perspective of his life and later clarifies it with more compelling poetry
What a fantastic video essay. Layered, interesting , and informative. Plus, King Kunta forever
good kid maad city is album of the decade.
King Kenny is one of my all time fav musical artists and im looking forward to more
Cant wait for Kendrick next album
Hey Polyphonic, thank you so much for this series. I love your work and look forward to every video. Keep it up man!!!
Please, PLEASE Go over childish Gambino's because the internet. I need you to disect it the way only you can. Its one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. To say Gambino is an underrated rapper is an incredible understatement
Isnt he quite succesful? Not sure how he is underrated
he really should go over it
To say that gambino is underrated is such a testament to how good he truly is. He's incredibly successful and the people who listen know how great he is but he's still underrated
I really want someone to make a video about the BTI script because not many know about the concept behind that album
@@GoblinGamingChannel I agree. I thought the album was only ok until I somehow backpedaled into the script. Was blown after relistening and reading together
yes!!! i’ve been waiting for this one since you announced the series
I see Kendrick's influence more than a lot of other artists this decade.
TruMusic89 honestly this
Much influence Kendrick has, hmmmm. More than most artists this decade he has.
Poly is talking about the decade as a whole not just the hip hop sound, Kendrick music is bigger than just his influence on hip hop. It’s his influence on the world within this decade.
Kendrick offspring: Dsmoke, JID, Tierra Whack, Boogie, Baby Keem... the popular ones that is
