How to grow beautiful crystals of salt - do your chemical experiment!

Hello everyone, today we'll be growing beautiful single crystals. Crystals can be grown from almost any salt, however, for a better result I suggest using the copper sulfate one. Of course, you may also use an ordinary table salt for growing the crystals. The very first thing you should do before you'll start growing a crystal is to make a growing seed. Seed is a small crystal that is immersed in the solution, and that will grow there. It should be about the size of a pea. At first, lets take a glass and pour there a third or a half of the amount of a salt. Next, pour some hot water into the cup and stir it all. If you've added less, then you'll need to keep adding salt until it's no longer dissolvable. And after the salt is no longer dissolving and the solution become saturated it must now be filtered to get rid of various impurities. After filtration, add to the bottom of the glass a little copper sulfate and leave this glass for a few days to let the crystals form. After a day or so you should find at the bottom of the glass that there's a lot of beautiful crystals has been formed, about the size of a pea. Now we merge the solution into another cup, to pick open interlocked crystal mass. Take any knife or any other sharp tool and drill the crystal mass. Once we've scratched it all, pour everything into a bowl. Choose the smoothest and large crystal. Also, I advise you not to take the copper sulfate with your bare hands, it is better to do it with gloves on. Once we've chosen the largest crystal, it must be now tied to a thread. To do this, I came up with an interesting system in which you can conveniently change the height of the crystal. Also with this system the cup is protected from dust. We hung the crystal to a cup, and now all we do is wait. Growing crystals requires a lot of time and patience. When I was doing it before I was also growing a crystal out of mixture of potassium chloride and sodium chloride in parallel with making the crystal of copper sulfate. If you want to get a very smooth and a beautiful single crystal, you'll need to filter the solution every two weeks to maintain its cleanliness. If the solution is dirty, a crooked crystal will grow and you'll get polycrystal instead of that single crystal we want. Polycrystal is when a lot of crystals fused together.

First off, i can understand that other non english speakers that are less fluent would be completely unable to understand anything he's saying.
Secondly, it IS bad. You can not tell me that someone with articulation that poor and an english accent that bad, is able to speak english properly.
It REALLY isn't that hard to get rid of an accent either.
I can speak american, brittish, scottish, australian, and russian accents almost flawlessly, to the point where, when i was in scotland, i tried talking to some of the locals there, and they had a hard time telling if i was scottish or not.
If it reflects anything, it is him being either unwilling or unable to learn the language properly...
Having said that, this WAS a great video, and i really enjoyed it.
But i would really recommend working on your accent, as it WILL get you a lot more subscribers.

The cool thing about crystals (well, one of them) is that when you see them grow big like that, you basically can see the way their molecules are structured on a large scale. Like that table salt cube, it's basically a large-scale grain of salt. I love it.

When we did this in school ages ago, I was probably the kid, who was the most excited about this... I wanted a big blue crystal, but I was an idiot. Some of the other students weren't at all interested, so they let me take their solution as well to mix with mine... but they were two different solutions, resulting in my crystal never growing. :(

for people who cant understand.... the process is basically,
-dissolve salt of your choice into a hot solvent until it become a saturated solution
-filter the solution to get rid of impurity
-add some salt as seed and wait for crystallization to happen.
-after crystallization have occur, extract the crystal and choose a suitable crystal for further crystallization.
-tied that crystal into a rig that allow it to be suspended into the saturated solution for further crystallization to increase its size.
-filter the solution daily to keep any impurity from mixing into the crystal.
-extract the crystal once it reach a suitable size and apply clear nail polish or any kind of vanishes for protection of the crystal.
but what i want to know is, how do you made that cube? does the type of salt determine the shape?

Exactly, crystals grow into shapes that resemble the shape of their repeating unit for the simple reason that that is what they are made of.

crystal particles are made up of 1 shape, which likes to attach to other molecules of the same shape. This results in a larger version of these molecules that we can see. For instance, if the molecule was a triangle, 4 of them would make a bigger triangle that to us would be a tiny triangle spec in the solution. This is the reason that impurities need to be removed, because if a hexagon got in there too then we would not have a triangle crystal, it would be distorted.

Hi there Thoisoi, I've been growing my own crystals but got some very rare results that I would like to comment them with you. First, in your video you said your copper sulfate crystal took you 2 months to grow 6.5 cm long, but mine took just two weeks, in fact in a single night, it grew almost 33% of its final growth state after I "feed" it (I like to think I'm feeding it) with some saturated solution. Second I've been unable to obtain a nice potassium chloride seed, all I can seem to get in my solution is "needle-like" crystals, not cubic ones. On my first try, I got multiple nice little cubes, I then choose the bigger one, but after making a second saturated solution, this "needle-like" crystals its all I got, so I guess I'm doing something wrong. Third, my potassium allum its growing flat, top and bottom, not rhomboid (I think thats the final shape). I'm also growing some potassium ferricyanide ones, but no further comments on those ones so far. My best regards.

different salts produce different crystals. Some ammonium salts are yellow orange in color permaganate salts are usually blue but also the salt itself will have different shapes depending on the chemicals like most chlorides are in a cubic structure

Essentially, the hot water that dissolves the Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate is a supersaturated solution because of the increased temperature. When the water cools, it is unable to hold all of the dissociated particles, so they precipitate into the first "seed" crystals. From there the dissolved particles continue to bond to the larger crystal, and voila.

What type of accent do you suppose it is? He is clearly from eastern Europe, and since a lot of beautiful blue copper sulfate crystals are coming out of Poland currently that is my guess. Even though this is by definition "laboratory grown" a beautiful 50 gram average multifaceted crystal on some form of substrate can be purchased for about $15.00 on E-bay. These all come out of Poland, but there is some guy in the Czech republic selling a mix of the copper sulfate and sodium chloride to get the cube effect crystals in blue and then selling them as Linarite, which is quite rare in beautiful flawless states like those pictured in this video. A 2.4 Lb "Chanthracite" crystal grown like the one in this video, but started with multiple large seeds on some rocky substrate and then allowed to grow for months goes for over a hundred dollars. There are so many various crystal that can be grown in your house; although, some use poisonous solutions. Alum is supposed to be a nice starter, and I am going to experiment. Ultimately I would love to grow a massive blue cluster of crystals like the one pictured in this video and also combine some other crystals such as the cube salt. It would look just like a several thousand dollar specimen. I have found the perfect base to grow my crystal on.

great video. one question.. have you tried to shape the first crystal to see if it follows the pattern when growing? for example, if you carve (with very precise instruments) an helix on the sides, will it mimic that shape and grow with an enlarged version of that?
No every crystal has its own shape and it will form that shape only unless impurities are added

Small amounts on the skin wouldn't be toxic, though I have sensitive skin so I wouldn't do it. Copper sulfate is an irritant. Also, if you accidentally touch your eyes it could mean a trip to the ER.

A crystal structure is just a nearly perfectly even arrangement of small particles in form of repeating units (elementary cell). @JoJoke 's No, you just accept that string inside crystal is the price of growing it. If you don't want the string inside you need to put crystal on the bottom of the container with solution but then it's not going to grow as nice as it does hanging by string.

I suppose you could try adding a few metal beads in the beaker for the initial crystallization and then using one with a bead inside as the seed. Then set up a form of magnetic suspension to hold the seed at the desired position.
I love coordination chemistry; metal complexes always form with beautiful coloured crystals such as the copper (II) sulphate which is blue or potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) which is a deep red.
