  • In my opinion box turning is the pinnacle of the turning craft. You can make boxes with any kind of grain orientation from a huge variety of materials. You can also: segment, nest, layer, pierce, burn, inlay, carve, ..... it pulls in so much from all the other areas of turning. Even the best in the industry still have avenues to learn more in the world of box making. Yet you can successfully make a box as a beginner too. I believe the acorn is the best form to learn the basics of box making. So come along as I walk you through a lesson on basic box making.

    Yeah, thanks a LOT man. I impregnated my rag like you said, and now the rag’s father is threatening to hurt me if I don’t make an honest rag of her before the little rag in the oven comes.
    But seriously, thanks for this. I’m a noob, and this is the project that FINALLY made me buy a 4-jaw chuck. I’ve been doing workarounds using hot glue, etc. but decided the time had come to invest in the proper tool. Can’t wait to start on this acorn box! (I’m thinking Walnut with a Cherry cap) Thanks again! Liked and subbed, really enjoy your channel.

      Best comment EVER! Love how even though there was a 'rag' involved, the period jokes could write themselves, but you, good sir, chose the high road with the impregnation instead.

      @@wortheffort tell my wife that! LOL I done that with pens once. Everybody wanted the same (purple heart / gold) pen I was carrying. Got to be a chore instead of fun. And then there were the lamps. I made my late wife a spalted oak lamp & of course she wanted a pair. And while I was trying to get her to tell me if she wanted tall and skinny or short & fat, I made the mistake of letting her see a video of a colored pencil lamp. Guess what she wanted a PAIR of ?!?! Thanks again for the videos! Great balance of informative and thorough without being boring.

    I appreciate the way you tied in previously-developed techniques. The explanation of how you were going to use the gouge to hollow out the nut from the bottom out had me almost yelling at you to just cut from the rim down into the center. Then, I remembered your passing comment about using a supported cut, and it made sense. I'm still skeptical that it's worth the trouble given that you finished the interior with a scraper anyway, but I will definitely give this a try.
    Thanks for taking the time to share.

    i had to pause the video to thank you. the insane amount of info you give is amazing. I have watched almost every video you have made, and the absolute best thing about every video is that they leave me with no questions about the project and countless things i want to learn more about or try on my own that are unrelated to the project. I was trying to turn a ring for my mom the other day with a metal insert, and as i was hollowing the recess to fit in the metal I couldnt get a straight tenon because even my smallest 1/4" scraper just wouldnt fit. the bottom constantly rubs the outside and the tool either doesnt cut or cuts off path. i have bought a few different tools to try this cut with and none have worked. Then i come across this box turning video and see you bottom grind the corner of your scraper, instantly slap my forehead and try it and... i have rings now. long story for just wanting to thank you for all the hard work you do in making these videos and saying that it is very easy to tell that you were an excellent teacher when you taught classes.

    I've watched hundreds of wood turning videos but this one is easily the best. Just one minor point - and that's how tight you want the lid on the box. Some ladies may not want such a tight lid as it will damage their finger nails. The lid on this acorn is what we call a turner's fit whereas there are many intermediate fits.

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, any losser and it'll open at certain times of year. It's why the acorn shape is so good because gives you ways to grip it. Different levels of tightness are appropriate for different boxes. Variables......
