You keep "teachin" and I keep "learnin". Thanks Shawn. Mind you ..... I still screw up .... but ... I'm having a good time doing it and slowly but surely getting better. Take care.
Had not been on my lathe in a while (nor my stationary bike) & decided to do the bike first, but wanted a video to watch; so pulled up this video on my desktop-large screen, turned up the sound, had a good workout, & learned even more techniques from you - and the music was a PHENOMINAL fit for my workout. So ... Double Thanks.
Just purchased a mini-lathe and have never used one. Spent the day watching and learning, so at least now I understand some of the basics and terminology. May I get as good so I can make a mushroom or acorn box. ‘How Amazing” you folks are!!!
I am so glad I came across your channel. Without doubt you are the most enthusiastic turning instructor it has been my pleasure to see. I have already learned much from you and truly enjoy your videos. Thanks man.
Some video show wonderfully made crafts, others do instruction very well. As for you, we get the best of all possible worlds. Glad I found your channel.
Hey, I just want to say thank you for your videos and the work you do on your channel. I’ve only been woodworking for a year (or two?) and each of your uploads have had a wealth of information. I just made my first turned box and your technique for the fitting is spot on.
I'm about to buy my first lathe. I have absolutely zero experience with woodworking of any kind. Your videos are informative, educational, and inspiring to me, thanks for all the effort you put into your TH-cam channel, it's helping to convince me to learn a new hobby! I'm sure I'll be copying many of your projects as I learn. :)
Thanks from a beginning turner. I just finished my turning class a few days ago. Looking forward to making lots of little boxes and ornaments and maybe some pens.
Hiya, just want to say I have had this video saved in my folders for a while watching every movement, and finally got out there today and tried it and not only does it look good but because of you, I got the snap! Thank you so much
@@wortheffort and then some. Planning on the same this evening. Think I must have rewatch that video around 15 times. You'll definitely have to do some more lidded box videos soon. Keep up the amazing work
I think watching your videos has become my new addiction. I've learned so many great tips. Hoping to do my first craft show in Nov so I plan on using a lot of the tips I've learned from you.
Sweet .was having trouble with them made 3 so far just practicing .they are much bigger than yours .and was having trouble opening them tks for the advice .I can see now we’re I went rong .and what happened to your hair.you looking very sharp now .
Excellent, informative video as always Shawn, I really look forward to your new turning videos turning up in my subscription section of TH-cam. Thank you taking the time and the effort to make these productions for us.
Thanks for taking the time to explain as you go along. I actually learned a new technique from this video - a new way to fit my lids. "Thinking outside the box." - LOL
You turning and teaching is great. I have a project idea that i'm not sure how to approach. We camp a lot. I like to cook. I need a way to store all the spices that I use to cook with. It needs to be rugged and hold 6 to ten different spices. Should I turn 1 large box ant have nesting little boxes inside or is there a way to keep one stacked set together?
Very nice and informative video thanks for the tips and the little tricks and explanations behind all of it just like in all your videos and very nice box. I'll have to try it and see how it works. What oil did you finish it with before you used the wax?
Lovely box and just what I am into these days. I have a Q.. were you using the sorby box hollower?.. Just got mine and seems I would be better using an old kitchen knife
Very interesting ,skilful use of the skew chisel and lady finger shaped gouge ,I was about to turn an acorn myself ,but out of a knotty piece of yew ,some more challenge ahead ,as for the English : the best lesson for a french woodturner ,thanks !
Happy Thanksgiving from South Florida. Watching again because I don't know what an acorn looks like. We have LIVE Oak down here in the real south (LOL). Little marble sized acorns with a hat. Looking to turn a Bowl of Gratitude for thanks giving table...Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for an excellent video! That's a beautiful large skew chisel you were using early on to shape the bottom of the acorn box. What size is it? And who makes it? Thanks!
Awesome! I never saw anyone using that huge skew chisel for literally everything. I understand it's an Alan Lacer. Would you mind letting me know model and size? Thanks! Cheers from New Zealand!
In that case, say what you usually say and don't apologize for it. Make those who find fault justify their position. Again, thanks for a great video, very inspiring.
I really appreciate all the new videos, thanks so much for sharing! I've been watching a lot of woodturner21's videos, too, and the skew technique is so interesting to me. I noticed both you and he have your toolrests significantly above the centerline of the turning for these, is that the trick for cutting vs. scraping operations?
It's a personal preference kinda thing. With the skew I just feel more comfortable coming down on top. That's also how the guilds used to teach the technique. If you have it at the midline you need to drop the handle way low to ride the bevel.
Thanks! Steve still produces a lot. If you're not getting notifications it might be a TH-cam thing. They don't always list latest videos anymore and will unsub viewers. I don't understand it.
Oh yeah, I see one from a week ago. He used to make videos every Friday but now he's reduced it to once every 3-4 weeks. I can't say I blame him; if it were me I'd have run out of ideas within a year! I love your acorn box and I'm going to try it. Thanks for uploading :-)
I liked it and model my turnings after your patterns I can't get the click yet what is it can you tell me. Without my lathe and a myriad of wood working tools retirement would be impossible I've been out of work 10 years and made wood my hobby as I have 5 grandsons who like my wooden toys better than plastic.
love your videos!! but i have a question...i've heard horror stories about wearing gloves or jewelry while turning...aren't gloves dangerous while doing that?? or even unnecessary?
Ever touched a blade after it's been cutting? It's hot! When turning green wood it's not uncommon to create steam. Dry wood to burn. Without gloves it'd be very easy to burn yourself with just the heat coming off the wood. Properly fitted gloves aren't likely to catch. So decide for yourself which risk you want to take. I chose to not have burn blisters on my hands.
miamivice222 not really. My accent, pace and tone have cost me lots of gigs. People don’t take slow talking southerners seriously. Question is, did you learn.
Phew !!! 😨🙉 that music is so irritating and loud, it's spoiling the tutorial because I'm having to turn the sound off, then back on to hear what you're saying. 😞 Got through it and loved the end product, I'd love a bowl full of these little acorns. Thankyou so much for sharing 😊🌟🌟🌟🌟
Just discovered your videos and they are excellent, really gave me incentive to try things out especially this acorn box. But one comment I must make is it really that bad in the US that you can't mention Christmas on TH-cam without apologising, you are one of the most Christian countries in the world!
No. You shouldn't say "the holiday season" It's really ok to say Christmas. No one calls Labor day "the holiday season" And yes, I realize there are multiple holidays around Christmas. If you celebrate one of them, it's ok to say the name of that one too.
Go ahead and say Christmas - it's allowed again and should always be. This country is founded on it and lets not let the left take that and many other things away from us.
You keep "teachin" and I keep "learnin". Thanks Shawn. Mind you ..... I still screw up .... but ... I'm having a good time doing it and slowly but surely getting better. Take care.
I enjoy how you think things out so thoroughly and observantly.
Thanks
Nothing wrong with saying 'Christmas Season'. Great, informative and interesting video.
Thanks

EUGENE ROGERS if you haven’t seen it yet I’d watch “woodturning demystified” on my channel.
The best teacher on TH-cam...Thank you for all your help.
Thanks
I really appreciate how you take your time to explain every detail. You don't just "make enough to reach 10 minutes" to satisfy youtube.
Thanks

Excellent video. I'm going to try this mortise/tenon method with my pepper grinders!
Your a great presenter and teacher thanks for your videos! BTW where do you get those twin disc reversible sided hand sanding pads please?
How is it that you don't have more subscribers? Your channel is gold!
Long form isn't that popular. Maybe someday.
Way too much talking. This should have been a 5-7 min video.
Excellent, informative video as always Shawn, I really look forward to your new turning videos turning up in my subscription section of TH-cam. Thank you taking the time and the effort to make these productions for us.
More coming shortly along with some turning/furniture combos.
Good pace, nice handling of the skew
Thanks
Excellent advice on fitting the mortise and tenon. Thanks. I am now a new subscriber.
Next video will also be about M&T. Only for furniture.
Brilliantly explained as always.
Thanks
Great explanation on fitting the lid. Thanks.
Thanks
wortheffort is definitely worth the time; thanks so much the great, informative, thought out processes.
Thanks

just what I was looking for, makes sense on that fitting of the lid - love your videos, keep up the good work.

Love this video Shawn. You should do a video on one of your larger boxes. Take care Sid.
You're making me want to buy a lathe!
My devious plan is working.
Snapped my tool rest (high grade chineseum 😂) got my new one now though so I'm gonna have a go at making a little Acorn box myself!
Great video full of info. Good quality but yet very fun to watch. 👍👍

Great Instruction.
Thanks
I got good at making these and can't keep them in stock in our shop. Thanks million!
Ok, now go teach someone else... teach em to fish.
Christmas / Advent is just fine!
Lovely box and just what I am into these days. I have a Q.. were you using the sorby box hollower?.. Just got mine and seems I would be better using an old kitchen knife
Love that monster skew
Alan Lacer makes em.
Very nice work! Well planned and explained so even beginners can understand. I do have a question for you though. Why no face shield or respirator?
Neither was needed in this situation.
Just found your channel and love it! New subscriber. I like how you explain what you're doing instead of just video. Will definitely help my turning.
Thanks

Brilliant - another thing added to my list of "Must try that" :)
Thanks for sharing; great video and I like your idea for the lid joint. What was the finish you used?
Can't wait to try one.
Do it.
Thanks for helping me
Thanks for an excellent video! That's a beautiful large skew chisel you were using early on to shape the bottom of the acorn box. What size is it? And who makes it? Thanks!
Eddie Agha Alan Lacer. Look him up.
@@wortheffort thank you.

What do you call that wide chisel type lathe tool? Looks handy.
It's a skew.
What is in that sandpaper sand which ?, that look very handy, yours Ricky
I like the new camera. Been missing your videos!
That camera is so far above my skill level. Hopefully I'll get better with it over this month.
Awesome! I never saw anyone using that huge skew chisel for literally everything. I understand it's an Alan Lacer. Would you mind letting me know model and size? Thanks! Cheers from New Zealand!
The blades from Alan Lacer, I did the handle.
Christmas time is fine !
I've been catching up on your videos, really enjoying them. Thanks for sharing all the good info!
Thanks
nice work. I'll have to try a box lid joint like that. What size and brand is that large skew you are using?
The custom handled skew is an Alan Lacer and the black handle is 1", I think Crown but when I replace it I'll get a Thompson, and heavily modified.
WOW THAT IS AMAZING
what oil did you use be for using bees wax?
Judy Francisco walnut
very nice brother .
Thanks
Great video, very clear explanations and beautiful work.
But who says you "should" say "the holiday season"? What's wrong with Christmas?

The click is the oval of the tenon sliding into a less constrictive space that forces the shoulder down. Keep trying, it'll come.
