    Loved the video. I am looking for creative approaches to boxes and the steps various turners use to make them. Even though it was on the long side I appreciated the pace of the video. I am new to wood turning and some videos go so fast I have trouble keeping up. I also appreciate the list of tools you included. Very helpful.

    Very neat, much smarter than typical thread chasing, for the warping doesn't tighten it at all.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! I think it's a great alternative to chasing threads. When done right, hand chasing can be awesome. Sam Angelo does a great job at it.

    HI CARL BEAUTIFULL as u normaly do. weldone. wood burl is a beauty.

  • @MarklTucson
    @MarklTucson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That wood really has great figure. That must have been a massive piece of furniture to provide blanks that size. Those rings really seem like a great solution to making threaded boxes if one does not have, as Mike Peace calls it, "uranium enriched wood" that lets one chase thread in it. A couple questions: 1) If one over-achieves in making the recess for the insert, how much margin does one have with the epoxy? 2) When hand chasing threads, the top and bottom piece can be made to line up in grain or figure by trimming the piece until the figure lines up when the box is closed. What is the recommended way to to that with these rings?
    Really enjoyed watching this; saw that you had added those rings and now plan to get some the next time I place an order.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Mark! The epoxy is pretty thick, so you have a good margin to play with. I would just go slow and take your time. As far as lining up the grain, it's pretty easy. Just put the epoxy on both sides (being careful not to get it on the exposed parts) and simply thread the lid on until the grain lines up. I did an Urn a few weeks ago and lined the grain up on it, and it worked great.

    Beautiful repurposed wood project. Q: If you want to align the grain of the lid to the base can you screw on the brass lid fitting to the base, apply the epoxy, then push the lid to the position matching the grain? There’s the risk of too much epoxy but could you put a minimal amount on then once dried supplement with CA for strength?

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you very much!! You absolutely can do that. We just finished an Urn and did exactly what you're talking about. I didn't use the CA, just epoxy though. I should of mention that in the video!
