The Architecture of Breaking Bad

  • Breaking Bad is one of the greatest shows, partly due to the development of Walter White’s character.
In this video, I examine how Vince Gilligan and his team utilise architecture to elevate Walter’s character while also analysing the architectural structure.

and that’s besides the point. I’ve never heard of a middle income suburban american home having 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. it’s even weirder when you consider that it’s in the master bedroom. like what if walt jr has to pee in the middle of the night but his parents are asleep? it’s just kinda weird. this would be ok in a 3 bedroom apartment or something but a family home should at least have a guest bathroom

Great analysis! I always loved how Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul use architecture. Walt's house, Jesse's house, the super lab, Los Pollos, Saul's office, the RV and many more spaces are basically characters in themselves. They have their own arcs, transformations and even emotional impact. When Walt and Jesse had to dispose of the RV for example, it felt almost like a character dying. Not many shows can do that.

Great analysis! You could probably make an entire separate video discussing the interior decorating/lighting of the home. The set designers made some great choices. Like adding lights the bottoms of kitchen cabinets and that huge dinner table fixture, allowing for night time scenes to come across as intimate (Walt finally getting to hold Holly in S3E5) or unsettling (Walt getting the call from Mike at the end of S5E2). The choice to light the pool also gave viewers some great moments. While the house is unassuming, it reflects the tone of every scene so perfectly. Glad I stumbled onto your channel!

If you look at Canadian and British house plans, you will see that 75% only have one bath. The floor plan image you used is wrong, I’ve spent weeks of my life making Walt’s house in bloxburg on roblox and I can tell you for a 100% fact that there is no door across from the front door that connects to the garage, we barely ever see any of the garage throughout the whole series (i know, I’ve scoured every episode for the slightest glimpse of it) and I can tell you with 100% certainty we never see how the garage is connected to the rest of the house. We see clearly that there is no doors that connect to it from inside Holly’s room, or walt juniors room, as we are shown all corners of both of those rooms, and there’s no door across from the front door like I said before, because we see in the episode where walt throws the pizza on the roof, when he walks up to the door and we see out of it, the hedge extends all the wall to the wall, as far as I know the only way into the garage is from the big fat metal garage door. BUT IF YOU LOOK AT IMAGES OF THE HOUSE IN REAL LIFE, WHERE THE GARAGE DOOR IS OPEN, YOU CAN SEE THERES A REGULAR WOODEN DOOR AT THE BACK OF IT, CONNECTING TO WHERE IT LOOKS LIKE THE CORNER OF HOLLY’S ROOM SO I’M JUST DONE. I AM NOT CRAZY, I KNOW THEY SWAPPED THOSE DOORFRAMES.

Totally understandable. Apparently she’s owned the house for over 40 years so she owned it when they filmed, but she obviously didn’t know how famous the show would get. In addition to fencing outside now, she even had to put a metal roof on the house to make it easier to clean up all the pizzas that people throw up there. She used to be okay with people wanting to take pictures at first, but she’s at her breaking (bad) point now. Definitely kind of a nightmare.

Wait a minute. In an interview, Gilligan said that the interior of the house was actually a stage set in a big warehouse. Can anyone confirm that?
I myself was appalled that poor Walt had to live in such a shrouded, dismal, ugly interior. Pre-meth-cook, his was a life of mind-numbing boredom and suffocating banality, devoid of beauty, joy, and dignity. It's amazing that Walt maintained a compliant façade for so long, without going stark-raving mad. I've known many penniless people who have a lot more joy and beauty in their life (with them living in ramshackle hippie shacks) than did wretched Walter White, who had none. The director created that interior to emphasize that Walt's life had been a banal, mediocre living hell. (How I wish that he had busted loose years before his diagnosis, and taken Flynn with him, both of them seeking beauty and joy and dignity, freed from the docile compliance to unworthy conventionality represented by this house.)
By the way, I was expecting an enraptured homage to the Mexican architecture filmed in BB...but wait, that's mostly in Better Call Saul. These Mexican film locations give a decisive contrast to Walt's miserable dump of a house. How about that farmhouse where Mike Erhmantraut is held captive by Gus Fring? You know, even Lalo's farmworker (the one that got the dental work so as to pass as Lalo's corpse)...even he lived in a lovely little house, a house the like of which Walt and Flynn could have lived in happily.

After some deep research I am thoroughly shocked that Jesse's house (previously his aunts house) is less than 400 feet from Charles McGill's house, also for a little bit when I was younger my family lived in a 3 bed house with 1 bathroom which wasn't an ensuite thankfully but still it sucks ass

You can search up 'PD Sun-Path Map Web App,' onto any browser and it should be the first link under a website named 'bitbucket.' When you click on the website it's going to appear as a blank map. So make sure you look at the tabs above and click on the drop down menu saying 'map' then click on 'OpenStreetMap: Standard.' Now you can check the sunpath of any location in the world.

01:30 minutes opening for a 8 minutes video. Good ratio.
Remind me to skip the 16 minutes opening on your 90 minutes movie, when you'll make one.

it makes me sick seeing the people harass the owner of the house. (before anybody responds, i dont give a fuck it is just a house not a tourist attraction go watch the show again...)

the old owners were actually greatful for people visiting but I believe they died, and the people who live there now refuse to sell it for some reason. Also the current owners always feed the trolls and have been caught saying slurs and such to visitors.
