    I love how they were so innovative in this episode. They used the same set but had Rob do funny things behind the bookcase like there was no wall there.. which there wasn't. This ingenious reuse of props and talent probably saved their studio thousands of dollars in production expenses. Whoever thought up this concept deserves a long overdue raise.

      Carl Reiner did a lot of the set design, as well as the writing of the scripts, so he may have had a bit of say in this one's set, too.

    Originally telecast on April 13, 1966.
    Carl Kleinschmitt based this episode on his habit of scrawling unflattering comments on the margins of his scripts for "THE JOEY BISHOP SHOW" (he was actually what Carl *pretended* to be as "Alan Brady"), then whiting them out before handing them to Joey.

    It doesn't seem to bother Mel that his sister is being cheated on.

    • @hollybigelow5337
      @hollybigelow5337 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don’t think it’s a situation where it truly doesn’t bother him. I know I’m reading a lot into a situation involving fictional characters, but they are pretty well written, which leaves space for conjecture.
      Personally, I kind of get the impression that Brady has that show biz kind of relationship where his wife generally has very strong suspicions about all of the regular cheating, but she generally chooses to ignore it partly because she likes the perks of being married to a star, and partly because that’s just their personalities. However, especially in that day while it’s okay as an open secret that everyone suspects, having it move to the world of allegation with actual evidence still will change everything. If Mel tells his sister, to save face she will have to do something like divorce him in a very public way. With Mel knowing an actual name, and there’s bound to be other evidence that will come out, and in those days the wife would likely get a pretty heavy settlement and Brady’s reputation and possibly career would be over.
      It’s one of those twisted games where everyone knows the rules and follows them even though they know the hypocrisy involved. This isn’t the first episode where it’s an open secret that Brady has several women on the side.
      Laura explains the rules pretty clearly in the Anthony Stone episode. If you know/suspect a girl is actively being deceived you have an obligation to say something, but if you suspect she knows no matter how much it may confuse you personally you stay out of their business.
      In spite of everything, Brady must do some things right in the way he treats his wife. Otherwise as they say in the episode where Mel gets fired, Mel wouldn’t be going that extra mile to take care of him, help him, and protect him from a loyalty that comes from being a brother-in-law. It’s pretty clear Mel’s sister is also pretty independent and does what she wants and isn’t going to listen to the advice of a protective brother, anyway. Who knows, maybe part of why Mel wasn’t invited to the wedding was because he and the rest of the family tried originally to talk her out of it by pointing out things like her future husband’s serial cheating, and she made it clear she didn’t care and married him anyway and deliberately didn’t invite any of her family. I know we never meet her, but from the clues we have she is definitely the kind of woman who can look after herself, who likely has a bit of an untraditional life, and who knew exactly what she was getting when she got married. Both spouses sound like they have an arrogant and perhaps even narcissistic/psychopathic streak. You aren’t going to get her to leave from an emotional place, but she likely would leave from a logical/selfish, and perhaps even sadistic place.
      That’s why Mel uses this piece of blackmail strategically. It is designed in such a way that it can blow everything up. No one wants the situation to blow up, but Brady knows if he fires everyone suddenly Mel will have little to lose. It also feels like Mel specifically is enjoying the situation partly because he now has a power in a relationship where he normally has no power, but also partly because in a situation where the rules say he has to pretend that nothing his happening while Brady keeps cheating on his sister, and while he can never properly protect his sister, at long last he has at least found a way to make Brady regret cheating on his sister. It’s all down to acting choices, but I really get the sense that Mel is particularly satisfied that the reason he is able to do the blackmail is precisely because of the cheating behavior.
      Yes, I know that may sound like a stretch, but it’s completely in line with the culture of the time and is consistent with everything we learn about the characters both in this episode and in several other episodes.
