People act surprised if you think these old shows not realistic way of life. But I had a wonderful normal childhood, as all my friends. This show, more than any calms me to watch because it reminds me of my childhood. No one swore, no big yelling fights. Just days of playing outside with my friends, then home when dark, when my dad got home from work and we had our family dinner. I raised my family the same way We have been married for 53 years. A normal life is the best way. Pick your spouse carefully, you CAN have a happy family, just like the Dick Van Dyke show.
The only comfort I feel is because Dick Van Dyke is still living. I get a little sad when I watch these older shows and the actors have passed. I know….it’s inevitable but still miss them.
Think my favorites are when they all stayed in the haunted cabin..arranged by Mel….and the one where Laura keeps opening Rob’s mail including the blow up raft!! 🤣
Dick Van Dyke is a true master of physical comedy; Commedia dell'arte! Anyone else hear about, Dick Van Dyke's Jaguar fire? He wasn't hurt, but the Jag didn't make it. It's probably old news over there in America.
It's funny how they're always changing Mel's relationship with Alan. In some episodes Alan is married to Mel's sister and other episodes Mel is married to Alan's sister.
I would've been awesome for this show as the Continuity director. This episode contradicts the one with staying up for 100 straight hours on the radio.
I always thought there was a lost episode of the DVD show. The one where Mel completely loses it and beats the crap out of Buddy! That would be something to see.
A lot of what was commonly cooked in the US during the 1960s reflected cheap foods from the Depression era. Franks and beans actually was really popular with kids and often served at kids' parties, as well as being considered something of a necessity at cookouts and picnic-barbecues. No, pizza wasn't really a thing in suburbia in the 1960s. Making spaghetti at home instead of going out to a 'nice little Italian place' for it was pretty adventurous cooking in those days.
Franks and beans. Super tasty unless one is spoiled on what is now sold as food, like pizza. We have so much fake food that our taste buds are fooled into thinking we are eating food. Think I'm crazy? Go buy a Me-n-Eds Beef and Olive pizza and leave half of it in the garage in it's box. Check it in six months. You will find what appears to be a ceramic pizza!! Nothing rots. I did this by accident and that's when I started looking into the food industry. It's toxic and poisoned beyond belief. Best advice is to grow your own food as much as possible from Heirloom seeds.
I've always loved Laura's character in this episode. She seemed more mature and actually had Rob's back. If only Rob and Laura loved each other this much on the whole series
1 John 3:4-10 KJV [4] Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. [5] And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. [6] Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. [7] Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. [8] He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. [10] In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

You’re most richly blessed. I wanted this, I dreamed of it, planned for it, but it didn’t work out that way.
The only comfort I feel is because Dick Van Dyke is still living. I get a little sad when I watch these older shows and the actors have passed. I know….it’s inevitable but still miss them.
Me too
At this rate, Dick and Keith Richards are having a race to see who lives longer😂

If you come back to read this. Someone did a biographical interview with rose Marie shortly before her passing. So worth watching
Absolutely one of the best shows EVER on television. Thank you once again for sharing these gems.

Fabulous show and unbelievably talented man!!!!! I never missed a show as a kid.
Originally telecast on January 30, 1963.
Love those simple and uncomplicated times

I like flashback episodes of any show.

That meal could put you right to sleep.
Strange. I have the whole series on hard drive and thought I had seen them all but not this one.
It's funny how they're always changing Mel's relationship with Alan.

That's action / adventure or violence. Not comedy.
Jerry Paris was the best director!
What was the first episode he directed on the Dick Van Dyke Show?
Fashion was so pretty back then.
One of the rare episodes that Mel Cooley had hair.
Mel probably borrowed one of Carl Reiner's toupees for this episode.
I am, having sauerkraut and franks for supper!
The next time
I will have franks beans and sauerkraut, for my supper next time
Try kielbasa with saukraut and mashed potatoes. Yum!
Frank's and beans favorite dinner ? I guess they didn't have pizza places back then. 🤣🤣

@@FigaroHey hot dogs beans and brown bread.....Saturday night dinner at my house. 👍
yes, not a fancy dinner by today's standards is it? my mom's nightly dinner from those times we're like that. she cooked every night.
But they did an episode on Dick Van Dyke that there was Chinese food 🥝.

Alan Brady...the great Carl Reiner was the real writer and creator of this fabulous show!!!!
Dick van dyke. Show. Friends. Best. Bubby. Silly. 😊 😊. Rob. Lana. Friends. Best Jc

Richard Deacon was only 3 1/2 years older than DVD.

Is that a mink stole
It was a suit with a fox collar.
