So many of you guys out here helping others learn. THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO ON TH-cam HELPING ALL OF US LEARN. Your channel, scannerdanner, southmain auto, eric the car guy, scotty Kilmer, I love all of you guys.
Thank you so much for the information in this video. I am experiencing hesitation or dead spots (not all the time) when accelerating always when the pedal is being pushed at a certain point. I told my husband I thought it was a TPS issue. He reminded me I’m not a mechanic and took it to a transmission shop. $2600 later we get it back and same issues. Took back to shop and after a month we got it back again. Still does the same thing. After watching you test and explain the dead spots issue I’m 💯 convinced that the TPS is the root cause of the problem. It feels like I’m running out of gas but only for a second and only when accelerating from a stop between 20-30 mph. I will be having the TPS tested. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your videos! Had intermittent hesitation/service engine soon on my 95 Olds Station Wagon. Replaced many things before watching your vids to include: wires, plugs, ignition coils, and PCV or something like that. Mechanic cleaned throttle body and put a gas additive in. Still hesitated. Brought it back he put a new fuel filter on and more gas treatment. Still hesitated. I Brought it back again. When I went to pick up the car he told me he was clueless and told me to take it to a dealer. Frustrated yet more educated after watching your videos I told him I was no mechanic but insisted he install a new TPS. If this did not work I was going to buy a multimeter and check my MAF and MAP sensors myself. Particularly my MAF because I learned on your video (if I understood your correctly) if you have both a MAF and MAP the MAP does not really affect the 14.7 : 1 ratio. In any event the hesitation ceased after the new TPS was installed. However I was stalling at stop signs etc. I unplugged the ECM fuse, plugged it back in, let it run 10 mins. Shut it off and turned it back on for 10 mins for a computer relearn. All is well! Car is running perfect! Thank you so much!
Just wanted to throw my thanks up here as well. TH-cam content like this has been so empowering. I never did well with instruction manuals and such. I always thought it was just me and not being mechanically inclined. Turned out to just be a learning style thing. Watching something be done while I do it myself is my jam, and then I never forget it. I do a lot of my own wrenching now and it’s saved us so much money and I actually enjoy it.
He’s totally right, I had 4 codes on my c6 vette, I went to get a diagnostic to Chevrolet dealership and they wanted to replace catalytic throttle body, and sensors cost $2900 which is a lot, then I went to a test only repair shop and I spent $150 they solved the problem as this guy is saying 😎
Im in the 2%, I’m Not a parts changer I’m a diesel mechanic who is striving to be a master diagnostician. Thank you so much for your videos. God bless you.
The WHY is always more important than the HOW. Unless you like putting new parts on your car for nothing. If you don't, you're definitely in the right place. Matt is the best. Period.
@@SchrodingersBox I Left what I finally found on our other chat. UGH!! Hoping it's not as bad as it looks but I always expect the worst. That way it's not like a kick in the gut when it is and a pleasant surprise when it's not. LOL Thanks a million Matt!!
Schrodingers Box, Matt, thank you for your time in making this video, listening to you I became smarter and knew better how to troubleshoot for the problem having the basic knowledge acquired by watching this video. Transmission will not shift 3-4, later I found out it will shift if I released the accelarator, RPM drops to around 1,000, then it shifts. Also it shifts if I go slowly not to eceed 1,400 RPM then it will shift. I checked the TPS on the car using voltmeter. had a variable reading as I move the throttle both up or down. IT worked, then I cleaned the contact points.for both the TPS and the connector. IT worked, thanks a lot.
I just want to say thank you for the thorough instructions on how to check a possible malfunctioning TPS. I have to say This is outstanding. Thank you!
Hello All! I really appreciate everyone who takes the time from their lives attempting to make a difference and help others with their knowledge and skills! When making videos such as these I often wonder if these people are looking for ratings or actually trying to make a difference. The reason I say this is simple! In this particular video while it is informative, it has some spots that need to be corrected before being released to the public! For example: (At 20:40 where he is showing the meter and attempting to make it move, you cannot see the meter!) For me I'm very technical and almost switched to a different video. To make this a better video be sure that before you release this to the public; even if you have to start over, be sure that everything you are trying to show is readable and able to be seen! Do not leave it up to peoples imagination to see what you are seeing or talking about! Other than this I feel he is doing a great job of breaking things down and the technical side of things many on these videos do not! Keep up the good work! Thanks Daryl
+Daryl Wade Thanks for the criticism. I decided to look at your channel so I can see how to properly do a video but you absolutely have none whatseoever
Great job! I'm a good tech, I need to stay fast, fresh and professional. Watching and listening to your lessons help me.They are clear, thorough and easy to follow. I fully believe to be a great tech you must remain teachable and have a desire to teach. If you are able to teach diagnosis and explain the description and operation clearly then you understand that system. Thanks, I've watched this before but I am starting a new job this week. Your videos amongst a few others help me stay sharp. I let the playlist roll.
I have a 2000 f150 5.4 290,000 miles i bought new and 3 wks ago started having idol problems at stop sings then having signs of torque converter lock up when put in drive or reverse and just die and when it did run it had low power...a dozen mechanics said it was the iac ,or maf,or throttle body wore out, or egr valve or sensor ,fuel pump and so on...transmission shops said the converter was shot and needed a new one...3 days ago a local mechanic called me and after the formal chit chat told me to bring it over and he would fix it...turns out the tps got out of calibration somehow and now the trk and tranny work and run like brand new and he only charged me 45 dollars.I had no idea that tps controlled so much on that engine and tranny and he saved me a lot of money from witch hunts.
I gotta tell ya, I really just stumbled on your channel, happily so, but was very pleasantly surprised at your intelligent troubleshooting approach. Decades ago (fasten your seatbelt - I should easily be through in 45 minutes or so) I was a Director of Maintenance (FAA title) in the General Aviation world. I insisted that my techs AND I do what I've always referred to as 'intelligent troubleshooting.' No parts guessing in our shop - we needed routine customers rather than return customers - there's a huge difference. Watched you until nearly 2 this morning. As I was waking, something hit me that I hadn't remembered in years. (During your cautionary comments about how easy it is to lunch your processor with the wrong wave of a meter lead, I began feeling a little apprehensive about troubleshooting my recalcitrant '93 F150 5.0L.) Early this morning, however, it came to me...PIGTAIL !!!! 50 years ago, as a young Aviation Electronics Technician (AT), I was taught to make a "pigtail" from a connector half (usually male) and the exact same color and gage wires as the harness end of the connector. You simply plug the pigtail into the suspect component, then separate the 3" or 4" wires far enough apart from each other to safely use your meter, enjoying plenty of separation between leads, thereby GREATLY reducing the risk of an unhappy fornication of the computer. I've subscribed.
Thanks man. Yes I actually have a collection of various pigtails I use for testing and they are especially useful for components where it is difficult to reach the terminals!
Collegiate Match Fishing Lol, I just started the channel a little under 2 years ago, ironically, as a result of my getting sick of channels with swaptrons showing how to do things wrong.
Jason Mills Mine too lol- it's now become a second source of income in fact! It could for anyone who spends this much dedication to it. There is a huge demand for people who can fix a car the first time.
15 years out of car diagnostic and just about to specialise in it again as there is virtual nobody capable of doing it profesionaly as apposed to just fitting an endless list of parts due to a bad earth, air leaks or trapped pipes resulting in wrong decisions trying just to get my own xkrs misfires done has opened my eyes to the void i cannot say how glad i am to have your your demos and the intelligent logical explanation mutiple misfires restricted performance take to dealers failsafe engine mode all a thing of the past with your guidence i watch each one twice and i understand totaly your a fxxxxxn godsend and very much appreciated as i nave been struggling till now to get a confident outlook on the job airconian uk keep up the good work its great
Awesome! Thanks for the EXPLANATION!! Some people don't appreciate what an explanation entails! I will use this as a reference video on all my vehicles! Cheers!
Thank you Matt for an informative video about the TPS. My transmission failed recently and despite the TPS code, the shop techs said "don't worry about it, the new transmission shifts fine". You used the word "swaptrons" - great word. Well after watching your video and understanding how the tps works, I was able to troubleshoot the sensor myself and verify that it did not even have a reference voltage getting to it. I did all this in the shop parking lot (I'm on a long road trip) with the techs looking on with guilty faces (they wrote on the transmission warranty receipt "electrical ok"). I found a bad ground, fixed it and calibrated the sensor. I'm very grateful for your video. After this fix, I did notice a dead spot with my DVOM at just about open throttle (smooth transition from 1.25v up to 3.9v then a momentary dropout before continuing to about 4.4 volts) I replace the sensor, but it is still there. Is there something in the throttle mechanisms that could cause this lapse (like a spring shifting, causing the sensor actuator to shift back a hair for just a millisecond)?
+Jimmy S Thank You that is good to know. I'm still getting a tps code and I've ohm'd out the wires from the sensor to the plug on the passenger wheel well and from the plug to the pin on the computer harness - I get .4 ohms - is that too much resistance? (perhaps I should try an actual load on those wires, such as a high wattage bulb)? If okay, would you suspect the computer?...And...If the computer itself has a bad ground, is there any reason not to bypass the computer and route the signal return directly to ground? Thanks, DJ
+Jimmy S It is a 1992 F350 7.3 diesel. It has 5 volts getting to the sensor and I believe the code read "out of range", yet when I back probe at the sensor, I have it set at 1.25 volts idle and 4.4 volts wide open. Yes the key is on, engine off. I have ohm'd the wires going to the computer with everything disconnected and get no more than .4 ohms resistance on any of them. I am starting to suspect the computer or its wiring inside the vehicle, which is why I wondered about trying to bypass the ground within the computer and instead bringing the signal return directly to battery negative.
Great learning process. Understanding is much better than simply replacing a part. I always want to know why a component failed. These tutorials explain in great detail exactly how why we need to think outside the box.
Hey Matt. Just found your channel and subscribed right away after this video. My jeeps rpms have been pulsating between 900-1300 rpms. I did this very easy diagnosis and found my tps has an unstable voltage at those rpms. I figured it was the tps but didn't want to throw New parts in and not fix the issue. Great videos and I'll be looking forward to more coming. Thank you.
Hey Matt, just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work creating this channel. I used to be your 98% parts store guy, but I was challenged by my 1990 Toyota V6 pickup was forced to grow into a better DIY mechanic. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping me figure out the proper way to diagnose engine troubles.
Luke Naea That's the whole idea of the channel so thanks for putting in the effort on your behalf as well. The channel alone can't do it- the viewer must be willing to put time and effort in as well- as you see, it does pay off!!
Matt, How you don't have a TV show I will never know. I have just recently picked up motorcycle mechanics as a hobby of mine based out of my garage and I must say this is one of the most informative videos I have seen to date. The way you explained it makes it very easy to cross reference and apply the knowledge given to motorcycle mechanics. Thank you very much sir, I will definitely be subscribing to your channel.
Hahah before you said it I was like...This is gonna be a "I'm gonna teach you how it works ....You learn how to fix it" .....Wich is by far the best way ..Thanx man...I like this no guessing approach!
Brother your the best my friend I'm a Subaru tech in NC been working the main line here for almost a year and I have watched slot of so called master techs just swap parts and half ass follow flow charts. I've been asking slot of electrical questions but no one can give me decent answers. So I've been binging on your channel and scanner danner. Thanks for.the content brother you are giving me jewels that are priceless. I love the electrical diag and test light skills. Like I said at work I rarely see someone pull out a test light other than myself. And when I fix the problem( the first time) my master tech team leader gets jealous. Lol he has a lot of comebacks
This is how I like to troubleshoot stuff. Understand how it works, then think what could be wrong. Not just memorising "check this, check that". Amazing video. Can't even tell it's 8 years old.
Thanks man!! it was worthy to spent time listening you, thanks for all the effort you are doing on this. - now... I will get into my Honda ex 2000 and see how it works for me!! :D
I'm really new to this channel. I find it very much useful to me. I downloaded almost all of your free videos and still downloading here in Saudi Arabia so that when I go back home to the Philippines I have something to learn and review for myself, for the reason that back there in the Philippines we have there a poor internet maybe because it is a poor country. Here in Saudi Arabia, I just came here to work as an asphalt roller operator in August 2018, that sometimes I put into practice the principles I learn from you to do minor checks to the machines before the mechanic arrive and do his thing, and I felt its great.
You have heard this all before Matt, but I will reiterate that you are making very informative and highly intelligent videos seasoned with a very dry sense of humor that I can identify with. Keep up the good work.
@@SchrodingersBox I have got an oscilloscope, not too expensive these days to get a fourth leg up on things. You can get the cheap low res ones at 150k or 1M samples per second or get a 2G samples per second. Those would be enough, unless you are trying to sniff logic.. then a logic analyzer or better resolution is needed. Also, 4x the frequency of transmission as the sampling rate is needed to get a clear picture. We, the public really need some free and open source ecu w/o efi for vehicles.
Matt , thanks for sharing your vast knowledge and your "HOW TO" explanation on understanding concepts. Plus your humor adds to the enjoyment in watching all your videos ..
Hi Matt, I really like your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Can you explain why when testing the TPS for resistance, you say to put 1 probe on the 5v and 1 probe (from your meter) on the signal wire. Why would you not put 1 probe on ground and 1 probe on the signal wire? When you tested the computer side of the harness for voltage, you put 1 probe on the ground and 1 probe on the signal wire. I would think it should be the same way to check for voltage and ground except for changing the dial on the meter from ground to voltage. Thank you. .
Thanks. I'm half an idiot but was able to follow your instructions. sure enough cleaning the throttle body cured my problem. I plan on watching the rest of your videos.
First Matt, let me say I appreciate your great sense of humor, I just woke my wife laughing at the Artistic ability / Steven Spielberg comment. Had a guy with a 2001 Corvette C5, come by the shop yesterday. He has been having an intermittent p0300 code returning, and the GM Dealer here in VA, could not find the problem. However, no surprise they replaced his plugs and wires and coils as this always fixes these problems............ I took my prior FT skills and added your far better skills I learned from your Fuel Trims video, to diagnose the car. I didn't take an hour finding the problem with the skills you gave me. I referenced your channel to him, as he is a car collector. Thanks Matt!
+Adam Czajka Thanks Adam….I'm interested in what you found…clogged catalytic converter ? other ? vacuum leak ? restricted exhaust ? Well documented restriction in plastic intake…factory defect under warrantee.
Hi Matt. Wanted to share the results of my TPS testing on the Park Avenue. I did the resistance test first and surmised that values did increase gradually as I opened the throttle. I then tested the wiring connector and found I had a solid 5V feed. I even moved the harness around and no change. Just for fun I decided to test the TPS once more and this time by moving the throttle VERY slowly, I noticed that before the resistance would increase at all it would drop even lower before coming back and then increase steadily. I did it 3X same result. Not 100 percent convinced, I changed the sensor and was amazed at the improvement in transmission and throttle response! It seems to always be in the proper gear, no RPM flares and the lock up engages confidently and holds under load. I believe it was the smoking gun and I can't remember when this car ran better. I would have never discovered this without the info on your video and would have paid a tech hundreds in diagnostics I'm sure. So, THANKS! Looking forward to more of your videos.
Nice! Yes this is why some type of graphing capability is so useful on variable resistor checks. You can do it with a DVOM but it's my harder. Nice diagnosis and fix- you're hooked now lol!
As usually the best explain. Really every time I won't to understand any sensor or data stream I come directly to your channel and search it. After 9years it is always the best corse. Many many thanks. I sorry for language error I do my best 😅
Very good video and a very clear explanation. The potentiometer is usually carbon which tends to crack but some are wire wound which don't have that problem. A potentiometer is used in radios to vary the volume and for many other uses. It is simply a resistor with a sliding connector which is the centre pin.
Thanks for taking the time to properly show us your Tech Tips....I have a 2007 Cobalt that according to a plug in diagnostic tool, shows that I have an issue with my Throttle Sensor....I’m familiar with a voltmeter since I’m an HVAC Tech so I’ll take your teachings and try to figure out what the heck I got here ~ Thanks
🤣🤣🤣 Dude..i appreciated this video by the 2m:00s mark...sold by 5m:00s...but hit 28m:11s...NOW THAT'S A CHANNEL WORTH SUBSCRIBING !!! Thank you for sharing your time & detailed knowledge.
+Stan Rodgers Did you know there was an option on 67 Camaros that sprayed a fluid on the rear tire via pushing a button on the dashboard….very rare….. I think they only sold a half dozen. Z28 was a small print option that year.
Ive seen other videos that you have uploaded on youtube, and your info is really helpful.I was able to fix my car and get ahead in my job. (i work in a collision shop,so knowing mechanical, and electrical is a must.cosmetics can only get you so far) Thank You and i look forward to future videos.
Thank you for calling me out, my car has been giving me some issues and finally it stalled on me the other day throwing a wrench light. Pulled the codes and got p2111 and a p2104 as well as an evap code po455. Evap can wait because drivability is more important than the environment IMO lol Update: I'm pulling schematics for the throttle and accelerator pedal and will be testing both. I have yet to run live data and see what the sensors are reading when the issue occurs so I will attempt that as well. As you said it pays dividends to diagnose rather than throw parts at something. It's been hiccuping for a while at idle and I decided to throw coils in it the other day as a half-hearted attempt and who would have guessed, they didn't solve the kicking hehe I need warm weather to come so I can sit outside and give this poor Vic the TLC she deserves Thank you for the immense insight you provided me with these two videos, I will surely check out your other content to learn more! I have a basic history in automotive repair and electrical both household and in circuits So the concepts aren't new to me but the actual theory is something I didn't get to learn in school but it's never too late to learn something new! Thanks a million for the time and after you put into this content, The 2% sticks around greatly appreciates it!!!
The educational value here is key. I am not one of those guys who just replaces things . That would be quite similar to just replace a Blown Fuse and pay no attention to the causes of why the fuse blew out to begin with. What I learned today, convinced me my own 2006 Saturn Ion 2.2 May actually suffer from, and I was not here for that reason. My reason, I am just curious, this knowledge can save hundreds of dollars from being sold parts that do not fix the problem. I am hooked on just learning new things. Being broken down on the shoulder of any road, with no trouble shooting skills just sucks.
I have been guilty of throwing parts at it, but after 20 years of tinkering with mine and others I have learned to diagnose to best of my knowledge, youtube has came along way since the 90s, and has helped me learn a ton without going to school to learn the trade.
I don't understand why people downvoted this video, this was an excellent presentation for the TPS. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! SUBBED!!!
No- YOU need to learn. Unless you know the relationship of TPS to MAP in a referenced code (which you have NO IDEAD what I am talking about) YOU need to learn. That's why I have 11million views and you... you have none. Why is it that people with no videos always give me advice?
I was testing one on a chevy venture today. I couldn't see it on the digital meter, but I got out my good old analog meter with the needle and you can see the dead spot really well vs the digital meter. The need just dips when it hits the dead spot. Cheaper than an Oscilloscope.
LMAO... Did you even watch the video? He removed the TPS, tested it, and reinstalled it! Would it had mattered if he installed a new one to show you? ROTFLMAO! Lazy? You must be blind and deaf?
The Dove Nest Vansion Hahahahaha Thanks Dove nest. Unfortunately I get comments from people like that guy ALLLLLLL the time. A lot of simpletons out there just don't "get it"- what I am trying to show here. They are just forever conditioned to play the parts lottery instead of using diagnostic logic.
LOL, I watched a guy on a video replaced the TPS, throttle body and pedal sensor...I call it the shot gun method. Change everything in the system...your bound to get it.
i almost feel like I'm in a lecture... i love it. I've been a bit of a diy mechanic for a long time, but I've never used a scanner... The amount of time i've spent under the hood removing this.. removing that.. to just watch you relaxing on your laptop.
You must think your a real celebrity well your not you can be dropped i do subscribe but i can go to others your not the only one that does this you don't like to be told anything goodbye have a good life
Actually YOU must think you are something important becauser you think your leaving has some type of impact. It doesn't. We never even knew you existed. We won't even know you're gone. But if I were to leave believe me, people would notice.
Man, you crack me up every time! Not only your videos are engaging (which is not an easy thing to do, since - let's be honest - some physics notions are just boring IMO) and thorough, but your sarcasm gets me very time! Your ability to convey knowledge is inversely proportional to your proficiency in drawing. I finally subscribed to your channel, best decision I took in the last 15 days! Love!
Great video. I can't imagine anyone having a negative comment. Surprisingly, and most unfortunate, these folks represent a minority who simply don't understand the discipline of troubleshooting or perhaps tend to have ADD. You are an excellent teacher, I'm a retired a EE and most interested in your advanced classes. I'm already a freebie sub but have no issues paying for good material. Please keep up the good work!!
Awesome! I'm also full of myself. When you are good as we are and do so much magical work in the auto industry one can afford to make a mistake . I actually make a couple of mistakes a month so it is easier to get along with the common man.
Why David? You have to give SPECIFIC indication of where I gave misinformation otherwise you just look stupid and ignorant. Where is the misinformation? Give a SPECIFIC example.
Hey matt, I like your videos and explanation just too crazy. Nice and clear and with a touch of humor there will keep you listening. I hope you still continues to make a lot of videos. Gr. Mat (from the Netherlands)
Thanks Matt. 2% = get focused and extract what you need from the video + enjoy the bits you understand - ignore the jokes you don't. But most of all, did the video deliver, answer is yes. I have watched the STFT/LTFT, O2 wide band and now looking for more. Thank you and please do stuff on turbos. Yes rice is nice as the back of GMs is only seen when lining up to pass. Cheers, Rob (Aussie).
thank you.. i have been watching so many videos . none of them made sense . i am not a car person at all. however you made it very easy for me to understand what to do to fix my issue.
Brilliant presentation. To the point, no minced words, and an attitude of "if you are ready" (hear) here we go. Great teaching skills. Awfully punny jokes... (keep 'em coming). Thanks.
I really appreciate the knowledge it helps for those who don’t have automotive expertise!! I have a trailblazer with similar symptoms of the map sensor but was told it was my timing chain so hopefully changing the MAP may help
Loved the joke about being familiar with the rear end of the trans am. Laughed out loud. Keep in mind that potentiometers work both ways and manufacturers might setup the TPS to read increasing or decreasing values. This is where getting a hold of factory specs and not just a Haynes manual comes in handy. In order to know what your expected values are you must acquire the documentation for those expected values.
I'm going to have to get factory specs. On Matt's discussion page an individual posted a link to his TPS showing 10% open to 70% open, identical to mine on the same car....one example is not proof enough that it should be that way even if it helps the emotions a bit.
"TPS Diagnosis Pt1" was an excellent presentation. I was just fine with the humor (mine is worse) and the negative comments I have read seem to have little or nothing to do with the value of your detailed technical content. Criticism is usually the case when lazy minds are challenged to think. Anyway, I have a 2005 Honda Element with a manual gearbox. It ran fine and then I had a clutch failure. I changed the clutch and now the car will not start. Though the TPS seemed to test fine I did change it for new . Still no start. NOTE: a few times the car did fire, but ran for just a few seconds; OBD indicated both TPS and IAT codes after brief runs; I have checked and adjusted Clutch Interlock SW, Pedal travel and Clutch Position Switch (Cruise Control); the Key Immobilizer appears to be working properly by dash indicator sequence; I have fuel flow though I have not been able to check pressure; I have not had a successful ignition spark check though I am waiting for a OTC 6589 Electronic Ignition Spark Tester for a more accurate test. I am new to Electronic ignition, but I sense an electrical issue and am in the process of continuity testing the harness though Honda does not have a full circuit diagram in their manual, only small sectional diagrams. If you do not mind, Two Questions: 1. Will a failure in the TPS and/or wiring circuit prevent the car from starting at all? 2. How does ones test for an ECM/PCM failure? Thanks for your help and consideration.
So I guess I need a digital volt meter? Next purchase down the road. I like how you are showing that trouble codes aren't always a clear message as well. I thought I was safe with an OBD2 code reader. Looks like I need to learn more. Thank you.
Damn glad I stumbled across another 'Greasy Geek' they're hard to come by! Just hope you show testing of the various sensors using a DVM, I'm the family mechanic, cheapest they can find, but I'm not equipped with a scan tool. When I start talking automotive I can see ppl's eyes glazing over!
+dondale68 Nearly all my videos labelled "diagnosis and undrstanding" are same format as this showing DVOM as well as scan tool methods. The channel is designed for people lke you!
Great. I've been successfully working on cars for over 30yrs, been in industrial maintenance for 25yrs, a supervisor for the last 11, but now I'm on disability and just don't make enough to buy a scan tool. As you see from my past I do know that every piece does have a specific job to do!
Mat your the best teacher because you tell us the how and why, and safety About working on cars. I wished i would have ran into before i dabbled with My tps, today,if it wasent for the tps problem i had today,we wouldnever have met.what you said in one lesson changed how i will work on cars forever.there were things that only you brought to the table, i hope you make lots of money your knoledge is better then cash.when yourcar is Down.now do i take my car in to adjust the tps.or Let it relearn the tango.
Don't change your teaching methods & non-sarcastic attitude(pun intended)😁 _^_ love it. And you are one of the few channels I actually watched. Happy New Year.
Hey Matt , really like the TPS explanation. I work on copiers for Canon and use a multi meter occasionally . Your explanation of the system is very explicit (nice) . Can't wait to get home and check the TPS on my 93' Escort wagon , it's been giving me some grief last few months with hesitation performance . Did the tune up ,repl. MAS ,cleaned throttle body ,had some gunk inside ,and had the fuel pump repl.(did help with some pep, still hesitated, unfortunately now leaks a little gas, already brought back once) ,anyway , look forward to watching your videos , so far they are extremely informative ,can hardly wait to see what happens , was looking to repl. TPS , would be nice to know if it's bad before I buy it . Thanks a bunch. Bruce ,58.
oh no, sorry if I used the wrong words. I love your videos. and how you explain things. I pretty much understand when you are explaining anything that has to do with car repair. what I am trying to say is that nobody can trick you, because you by then have already so many ways out LOL.
Me2 still learning, got my first diagnostic computer for Christmas (wife luvs me). I am self taught, old school way, thanks grandpa, dad, and uncle. Now I can do alot more and learn alot more. Truckdriver by trade, shade tree mechanic on weekends. Hobby makes me alot of cash.
I have this code and watched this video and learned a lot. Now I go out to my car and start looking at it. I found the cable unplugged. I just got my car back from the shop to get the Cat replaced. I did not have this code before the shop visit. I called to ask if they would have played with the cable and he said that would be possible as part of the diagnostic for the Cat. So I learned a couple of things from the shop and a whole lot from this youtube. Now I fully understand how the car works with these sensors. funny that my car ran pretty well. only problem was id died twice but other than that ran ok. Now I know why:)
So many of you guys out here helping others learn. THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO ON TH-cam HELPING ALL OF US LEARN. Your channel, scannerdanner, southmain auto, eric the car guy, scotty Kilmer, I love all of you guys.
Opel corsa utelity 1.4 2006..idling problem...loose.s speed on take off
Thanks for explaining the engine
We are few and far between!
This guy is like the Dr. House of the automotive world. Very intelligent in his craft and also very blunt! Love it
The WHY is always more important than the HOW. Unless you like putting new parts on your car for nothing. If you don't, you're definitely in the right place. Matt is the best. Period.
Thank my friend. good to see you back!
@@SchrodingersBox I Left what I finally found on our other chat. UGH!! Hoping it's not as bad as it looks but I always expect the worst. That way it's not like a kick in the gut when it is and a pleasant surprise when it's not. LOL Thanks a million Matt!!
Thanks for the class! I'm hooked. I'm binging on all these videos. Keep them going.
If you don't like him or his humor, so what, focus on what you can learn from him! He is teaching us some invaluable lessons in diagnosis.
Good advice! But also, people who don't like me or my humor should also focus on learning to appreciate both!
You're an asset to the automotive diagnostic community.
For example: (At 20:40 where he is showing the meter and attempting to make it move, you cannot see the meter!)
For me I'm very technical and almost switched to a different video.
You Are The Master!!! Thank you for breaking it all down. Please keep up the great work, because guys like me really appreciate it.
Thanks Again

Thanks man. Yes I actually have a collection of various pigtails I use for testing and they are especially useful for components where it is difficult to reach the terminals!
holy crap, an actual diagnostic channel!? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?
Collegiate Match Fishing Lol, I just started the channel a little under 2 years ago, ironically, as a result of my getting sick of channels with swaptrons showing how to do things wrong.
+Collegiate Match Fishing Ne too. I used to abhor having to use EFI cars because I have no idea where to start when troubleshooting
+Collegiate Match Fishing I know!! This channel has changed my approach to my beloved hobby of working on cars.
Jason Mills Mine too lol- it's now become a second source of income in fact! It could for anyone who spends this much dedication to it. There is a huge demand for people who can fix a car the first time.
15 years out of car diagnostic and just about to specialise in it again as there is virtual nobody capable of doing it profesionaly as apposed to just fitting an endless list of parts due to a bad earth, air leaks or trapped pipes resulting in wrong decisions
trying just to get my own xkrs misfires done has opened my eyes to the void
i cannot say how glad i am to have your your demos and the intelligent logical explanation
mutiple misfires restricted performance take to dealers
failsafe engine mode all a thing of the past with your guidence
i watch each one twice and i understand totaly
your a fxxxxxn godsend and very much appreciated as i nave been struggling till now to get a confident outlook on the job
airconian uk
keep up the good work its great
Awesome! Applying scientific principles through engineering. THIS is what I've been looking for. I hope to watch the whole series.
Thank you.
Alex Thelen Awesome Alex- you're exactly the type of person I made the channel for- welcome and enjoy!!
Haha love the introduction!! If my tps goes (or not) I'll watch this again :)
Thank you for an entertaining and informative "How to..." on the TPS.
Thank you. That was the best practical description of what a throttle does and how a potentiometer works that I have seen to date.
Oh, man. Thank you. At last I find something I can understand!!!! Thank you!
This is how I like to troubleshoot stuff. Understand how it works, then think what could be wrong. Not just memorising "check this, check that". Amazing video. Can't even tell it's 8 years old.
thank you!!
When you get back to Phillipines let me know, I'll set you up on my pay channel for free so you can download those videos too!
@@SchrodingersBox Thank you very much.
Great stuff. And the last remark was priceless.
You have heard this all before Matt, but I will reiterate that you are making very informative and highly intelligent videos seasoned with a very dry sense of humor that I can identify with. Keep up the good work.
HA !!!!! . First time seeing this vid. Love the ending dialog. Good vid.
Thanks for the thorough video. I'm an electrical engineer and always appreciate why and how things work.
Very informative video with an unexpected ending :)
You my friend rock. In all honesty you are the real life Tony Stark, you have the brain, the looks, and the attitude.
Lol thats two people referring to me as Tony Stark. I have no idea who that is lol.
Come on! Iron man Matt, Iron man!
Haha am I the only one who actually watched the entire video? That last comment rocked.
Scott Amoroso Ha, I had to end it on that note- seemed perfect to entice people to Part 2 lol
😂😂😂😂😂
I couldnt take much of him, I stopped the video 🤣
Matt , thanks for sharing your vast knowledge and your "HOW TO" explanation on understanding concepts. Plus your humor adds to the enjoyment in watching all your videos ..
+i8nopunk Thanks bro!
Love these videos,great teacher
+Adam Czajka How about sharing what you found via the diagnosis ?
berkmanyt yes I will. This weekend if that's alright. if I don't post by saturday feel free to remind me :) Good night
+Adam Czajka Thanks Adam….I'm interested in what you found…clogged catalytic converter ? other ? vacuum leak ? restricted exhaust ? Well documented restriction in plastic intake…factory defect under warrantee.
Learned me up right proper. Yer a dang good teachin feller.
Walleye Willy right...
I'm on a situation trying to understand how TPS works I stumbled on your channel and I learn a lot thanks good job sir 👍
Very informative video, thanks!
Recently discovered your channel. I have been absorbing your videos on a daily basis and love them. thank you very much!
awesome teaching skills!
Nice diagnosis and fix- you're hooked now lol!
informative thank you so much GOD BLESS YOU
As usually the best explain. Really every time I won't to understand any sensor or data stream I come directly to your channel and search it. After 9years it is always the best corse.
Many many thanks. I sorry for language error I do my best 😅
That’s ok I understand what you are saying and I appreciate it very much!!
" if I had an oscilloscope I'd b playing with it all day like if I had a 2nd penis". LMFAO!!
Thanks for having a sense of humor!
Very good video and a very clear explanation. The potentiometer is usually carbon which tends to crack but some are wire wound which don't have that problem. A potentiometer is used in radios to vary the volume and for many other uses. It is simply a resistor with a sliding connector which is the centre pin.
Kay Douglas or Douglas Kay, you must be a friend of this bozo as no one in their right mind could watch the whole video.
Your a good mechanic. And a bad comedian...
No your both idiots in a box and the vile broke.
@@mkaberli That's an understatement.
You all dont understand his sarcasm, its technical term.😂
😂💩
This is what I’m thinking. I don’t know what he’s talking about I just want to learn the information
Your ricer jokes are the best. You seem to throw one in every video.. lmao
🤣🤣🤣 Dude..i appreciated this video by the 2m:00s mark...sold by 5m:00s...but hit 28m:11s...NOW THAT'S A CHANNEL WORTH SUBSCRIBING !!! Thank you for sharing your time & detailed knowledge.
I Appreciate that!!
Thanks for the video. I bet you can't find the TPS on 1967 Camaro!
+Stan Rodgers or a 2015 power stroke
My 2005 6.0 has 2 positions idle and full.
+Stan Rodgers Did you know there was an option on 67 Camaros that sprayed a fluid on the rear tire via pushing a button on the dashboard….very rare….. I think they only sold a half dozen. Z28 was a
small print option that year.
+duh I think there were only about a half dozen that had that option ?
Ive seen other videos that you have uploaded on youtube, and your info is really helpful.I was able to fix my car and get ahead in my job. (i work in a collision shop,so knowing mechanical, and electrical is a must.cosmetics can only get you so far) Thank You and i look forward to future videos.
I LOVE your hating style XD
Thank you for calling me out, my car has been giving me some issues and finally it stalled on me the other day throwing a wrench light. Pulled the codes and got p2111 and a p2104 as well as an evap code po455. Evap can wait because drivability is more important than the environment IMO lol
Update: I'm pulling schematics for the throttle and accelerator pedal and will be testing both. I have yet to run live data and see what the sensors are reading when the issue occurs so I will attempt that as well.
As you said it pays dividends to diagnose rather than throw parts at something. It's been hiccuping for a while at idle and I decided to throw coils in it the other day as a half-hearted attempt and who would have guessed, they didn't solve the kicking hehe
I need warm weather to come so I can sit outside and give this poor Vic the TLC she deserves
Thank you for the immense insight you provided me with these two videos, I will surely check out your other content to learn more!
I have a basic history in automotive repair and electrical both household and in circuits So the concepts aren't new to me but the actual theory is something I didn't get to learn in school but it's never too late to learn something new!
Thanks a million for the time and after you put into this content, The 2% sticks around greatly appreciates it!!!
i very like Lesson i want learn
The educational value here is key. I am not one of those guys who just replaces things . That would be quite similar to just replace a Blown Fuse and pay no attention to the causes of why the fuse blew out to begin with. What I learned today, convinced me my own 2006 Saturn Ion 2.2 May actually suffer from, and I was not here for that reason. My reason, I am just curious, this knowledge can save hundreds of dollars from being sold parts that do not fix the problem. I am hooked on just learning new things. Being broken down on the shoulder of any road, with no trouble shooting skills just sucks.
Im glad that im part of that 2% lol
I have been guilty of throwing parts at it, but after 20 years of tinkering with mine and others I have learned to diagnose to best of my knowledge, youtube has came along way since the 90s, and has helped me learn a ton without going to school to learn the trade.
I don't understand why people downvoted this video, this was an excellent presentation for the TPS. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! SUBBED!!!
Maybe because make model or year was left out. Tps varies enough to make video irrelevant
very negative introduction for the video. You need to learn....
Yea you look too lazy to show how to replace the throttle sensor
No, No No... I am too lazy to replace things that are NOT the TPS if the TPS is the problem. Understand?
It's the only way to go! Anyone can replace parts- and they all do. A lot!! More than half the time i fix a car without replacing anything at all.
I just wish you lived in the UK.. preferably near me
You must think your a real celebrity well your not you can be dropped i do subscribe but i can go to others your not the only one that does this you don't like to be told anything goodbye have a good life
Actually YOU must think you are something important becauser you think your leaving has some type of impact. It doesn't. We never even knew you existed. We won't even know you're gone.
But if I were to leave believe me, people would notice.
Oh a keyboard warrior huh??!! ROTFLMAO!!!
LOOK OUT EVERYONE!!!! We have an INTERNET TOUGH GUY on the loose hahahahaha!!!!!
Wayne Ermine. You are a prize idiot. Go away; you are not needed here.
WE LOVE MATT!
WE LOVE MATT!
Love!
Oh wow glad to hear it!! Yes I do realize some if the concepts can be dry by nature so I try to mix it up a bit!
Thanks man! People not only tend to fear what they don't understand, they tend to thumbs it down too lol
Awesome! I'm also full of myself. When you are good as we are and do so much magical work in the auto industry one can afford to make a mistake . I actually make a couple of mistakes a month so it is easier to get along with the common man.
Egotistical child!
Great video, this is the type of mechanic people should follow for instructions.
no its not he`s full of shit
I appreciate all the content! Been hooked on these videos for a long time already!
That is a good thing! Thanks for stopping by!
This guy is the best ! He knows his stuff and I want to say thanks for your videos and sharing of your knowledge agin thanks
David Montoya Thank you my friend! Glad you appreciate the effort! These videos are not for everyone, only a very few appreciate this type of material
Thanks.
+Mark Tobis You are the Perfect example of my intended target audience!!!
I really appreciate the knowledge it helps for those who don’t have automotive expertise!! I have a trailblazer with similar symptoms of the map sensor but was told it was my timing chain so hopefully changing the MAP may help
First, get data on the map before just changing it. If the the data indicates the MAP is the problem, then change it.
Schrodingers Box ok thank you for your response
If you do not mind, Two Questions:
1. Will a failure in the TPS and/or wiring circuit prevent the car from starting at all?
2. How does ones test for an ECM/PCM failure?
Thanks for your help and consideration.
Test for control to the coil. If none suspect CKPS- if there is signal return to PCM but it is not recognized PCM is bad.
So thankful you were found! You are a very good teacher.
Mat your the best teacher because you tell us the how and why, and safety
About working on cars. I wished i would have ran into before i dabbled with
My tps, today,if it wasent for the tps problem i had today,we wouldnever have met.what you said in one lesson changed how i will work on cars forever.there were things that only you brought to the table, i hope you make lots of money your knoledge is better then cash.when yourcar is
Down.now do i take my car in to adjust the tps.or
Let it relearn the tango.
I love your sense of humor & your ability as an artist but it's a good thing you have mechanics to fall back on.Keep it up
Thank you for thinking about the home mechanic with the bare minimum tools. You da man!!!
BTW nice Trans Am, what modes on it?
Since this video I am running it with a 6.0L LS6 with procharger supercharger and long tube headers. Not exactly modest!
What about the exhaust...Flowmaster, Magnaflow...?
Don't change your teaching methods & non-sarcastic attitude(pun intended)😁 _^_ love it. And you are one of the few channels I actually watched. Happy New Year.
Thanks man. No intent on changing anything- except hopefully make more videos this year!
Bruce ,58.
Being into Arduino`s for a for years makes this very easy to understand.
oh no, sorry if I used the wrong words. I love your videos. and how you explain things. I pretty much understand when you are explaining anything that has to do with car repair. what I am trying to say is that nobody can trick you, because you by then have already so many ways out LOL.
Thanks for your videos. Helped me take my career to the next level.
