Yeh so these are 3 amps I always skip that wouldn't be on my best amps list....except I kinda figured out that even these have uses : 00:00 intro playing 2:50 what do you mean these aren't the best 5:40 looking at defaults and quick changes that can make a big difference
Sounded immediateley better when you also showed the pic of the original amp. Maybe line 6 should give us an external monitor for drooling on the moddeled signal chain?
I use the Supro for two songs in our set...it gives a great dirty clean, that takes pedals well...i use it with the zen drive for 1 song, and facial fuzz into the Klon for the other...When I’m through the PA I use the 4x12 greenback stock cab, but with an sm7, 1.5” away. In my normal setup, it goes into the fx return on my Mesa TC-50, and into a Mesa OS cab (v30’s). Sounds fantastic for bluesy, classic, or stoner rock :)
John, these are great! I was wondering if you could do a tone tutorial on the skylark featured in Matthew Scott’s video at roughly 8:20. One of the best clean/breakup tones I’ve ever heard and can’t seem to recreate it! th-cam.com/video/S-dOmN8AvKE/w-d-xo.html . Cheers!
My go-to amp anymore is the JTM45 Bright and I never really hear anything about it online. I haven't been able to dial in the Bassman model to get anything I like.
I was going to comment that there is more of a raw tone than usual in this video. Then you mentioned it. :) I also feel like they 'inspire?' you to play a little differently too. I don't think I have even loaded up all of the Line 6 original models. I think I should try them out! Some models feel flat to me for lack of a better term - the Supro and some of the Marshalls come to mind. Subjective...
Yeh I thought there was something these models are doing that I've not really done too much in this vein before. For sure once you change from the default small speakers, these amps take on a way different vibe!
I like the “soupro” adjusted for p90s. One of my fav Helix amps now. I also made a patch for my J Mascis Jazzmaster a few months ago using the soupro pre-amp, litigator amp and two redwire Marshall IR’s. It’s my go to sound now when playing that guitar.
@@CMHobbies Yes! Could have been the guitar I was using didn't hit a model right. Sometimes it takes a few tries for me to warm up to a particular amp model - my mood has an effect on my ears. I have some Ownhammer IRs now (I attribute it to placebo effect) but they seem to feel better to me sometimes. I am getting better tones quicker after seeing John's techniques of assessing and then explaining why he makes certain tweaks. He has great ears! I haven't suffered the dreaded 'tweak more than play' syndrome with this modeler. It's fun to explore the options though!
Interesting about the voltage queen. Always overlooked by me as well, and as it turns out, i have a '54 Gibson GA 40. Same one you showed with the script LP! Maybe i will side by side those!
I used to have supro as gritty clean channel to archon hi gain amp because of its low DSP usage. So it is possible to have great chugging tone and some clean character between scenes with HX stomp.
Have you played with the Grammatico models? Kinda sounds somewhere in between a Brownface and a Tweed. The bright channel is sweet, and I'm really close to using that to replace my RevivalTrem pedal. (Still working on recreating the really dynamic trem with the dynamic split block to a second path.)
The Stone Age 185 is absolutely ripping mate. I have it dialled so the real thing would be smoking hot and pair it with a dual cab block of whatever cabinet and mic combination takes my fancy for that day alongside the new room reverb. For the cabs I always make sure I'm at least 3.5 distance away and cut at around 110hz and around 25% early reflections. Tonally I can go from jazzy to bark at the moon with just the volume knob on the guitar. Really is a great amp and has become one of my favourites after discovering it after years of daily Helix use live and in the studio. ✌🏻
Apparently, Jimmy Page used a modified Supro Coronado on Zep I. While it's not the same as the S6616 the Helix is modelling, it has a similar "flavor". Playing with the bias/EQ can get you some pretty gnarly early Zep/classic rock tones. Definitely not unusable, just very different from say...a cranked Marshall. Same goes for Supro's reproduction amps tbh. They do their own thing in the amp landscape.
i really like the honky mid peak of the Gibson amp with my usual v30 ir and my tele. cool exploding app type of rhythm sound u enjoy. thanks for exploring them!
I think some of these are more specialist models, but that's true for physical amps as well. I think the other factor is just personal taste. I don't tend to like the Vox style amps in Helix, but I think I just don't like Vox style amps. Most of the time I wind up using the JCM 800 and Deluxe models and those just happen to be two of my favorite physical amps.
Definitely, although after messing with these I feel like there's times that I'd reach for these models, for sure if I was looking for some classic rock tones that Gibson fliptop does it so well
I'm always looking for the "most diverse" collection of Amps I can have on my HX Stomp. I don't need two or more Amps that sound essentially the same. I recently added the Supro and Victoria to that collection. The Victoria can have an "electricity" in the tone I currently find interesting. Inspiration comes from diversity. Cabs remain something of a blind spot for me. There's only so much time and tolerance I can spend on tone spelunking. I wish the Cabs we as easy to audition as the Mics are.
HA, the Gibson sounds like a DARK METAL bands best Amp ever!!!!!!! WOW like that Soup ro right off the bat, the default sounds great!!! That Clean tone at the End, what Character. This is why I love Magnatone/vintage style amps. they had so much Character to them.
Yeh so these are 3 amps I always skip that wouldn't be on my best amps list....except I kinda figured out that even these have uses :
00:00 intro playing
2:50 what do you mean these aren't the best
5:40 looking at defaults and quick changes that can make a big difference
Content idea: try to make Helix sound as close to a duck "quack" as possible. The Mutron is probably the king for this kind of genre of music.
Hot intro jam with really fine soloing! Amazing that after all this time, you’re still discovering things you like in the Helix.
2:20 on is my favorite tone ive ever heard on this channel
I'm gonna stick this one into a bigger preset I think...
Sounded immediateley better when you also showed the pic of the original amp. Maybe line 6 should give us an external monitor for drooling on the moddeled signal chain?
The tone at 9:30 is awesome!

Incredible playing dude!
You're a hx wizard bro. Really appreciate your walkthroughs, be them paid for or not. And most of all, the playing and cheer. Have a merry 2022 :)

Will check it out!
I went on a similar journey with my stomp recently and ended up with a dual amp stereo setup with the voltage queen and mail order twin

I find after I put my favorite effects in front of and behind, they all sort of sound the same :)

@@johnnathancordy I've actually never checked that Gibson one out, but I'm going to give it a try. That was some pretty cool tones.
WOw supro sounds great as a Default.

Layer one of there with another bigger amp to get a super fat sound

Party time intro tune
They should give us another Plexi.
I think aa more Plexi typical circuit would go down well, agreed!
Such a scandal! :)
