This video was an adventure haha! Big thanks to Julian for letting me borrow the amp, follow him on Instagram here: instagram.com/julianmorganphotography/ Also just to be clear -- Line 6 makes a ton of awesome products that I do like a lot (like the Helix stuff), but this was too fun to make haha
I used it for raw black metal sound and it was awesome. I was never able to make that harsh buzzsaw sound on my laney ironheart or boss katana. So I guess it has its own place in my heart. :)
You can do it with any amp if you use the headphone out and record it directly into the DAW. Every amp sounds like this if you have no designated speaker
I think its the fact that some people try to use to write albums in the studio. As a practice amp then sure OK... if thats all you got. But thats all it is
I played through a Spider IV 30 for years when I started playing. They really aren’t bad practice amps. Once I started playing gigs with a band I moved over to a crate solid state 100 watt but don’t remember what it was before I got my Peavey 6505 and jet city cab.
@@hanshansi3029 Metal Zone + NS-2 with the Line-6 or almost any amp from the early 2000s was the goto. I was trying to be "revolutionary" by using the DF-7 pedal when that first came out because it had the option to plug in digitally with my EMU-0404
Wait a god damn minute. So you're telling me that the Line 6 Spider, on the Insane channel, with Bass at 7 and teble at 9, and no mids, ISN'T a good tone?!?!?!
"Hello my friends and welcome to "Wiilll it chuuuug", the video series where I tried a random piece of gear and basically attempt to make it chug... you know, metal chug, tchh tchh" ahah
Provided you have a pc or laptop that has the cpu to run that software, nevermind the cost of the interface... they may not be the best sounding amps on the market, but for someone who doesn't have money to blow on a laptop, interface, DAW, and plug-ins these are still great options. Especially those that are brand new to guitar and can only afford to spend $250-$300 to include the guitar itself.
I've seen some shoot-outs between a Line 6 Amp going into a high end cab vs. high end amp going into a Line 6 Cab. From my memory, the Line 6 Amp going into a high end cab was pretty solid.
I remember back in the 80s when my amp had that bee buzzing sound. It didnt inspire me to play as much. Later on, I realized it was I needed some drastic changes, like a new tube amp, certain speakers, it all did the trick on solving this nightmare problem....lol
I got a line 6 spider 4 head that sits in the corner with a garbage bag over it. I got the half stack too for $400 and swapped the speakers out couple years ago. It has a decent clean tone but that’s about it. After the Peavy 6505 MH I got an Engl invader 2 with the sound module. Engl fan for life.
Ive found out a trick to make these amps sound way better is to either place them on the ground (only if you have carpet) as this will make it sound way bigger and less scooped but if you don't have a carpet floor or want to place it on top of a table or on another amp you can place a folded towel on top of it and it will sound WAY better.
Dude my spider II still has its own spot in my room. I think the emulated dual rectifier on the metal channel sounds juuuust fine, and the emulated Hiwatt used for the clean channel has always sounded good paired with the chorus/flanger and tape echo or delay. With the exception of that introductory piece of crap that is the spider I, imo the rest of em don't sound bad at all friend. Now I'm using an frfr speaker with a pod go mainly which is 1000 times more better, but I'll always have love for my first rig. The spider II 210 & my 03 schecter C1 elite. End rant.
my first was a Spider IV and lets be honest.. we all thought it sounds great back in the days :D direct into Audacity with an USB Stick interface and a Harley Benton guitar.. now I'm writing this sitting in a home studio. Thanks for that nice memories! getting a bit nostalgic with my almost 40 years
I have a Spider Jam. It was a major improvement over a 25 watt fender amp and does everything I want it too. Just have to turn down the bass on my 8 string.
my first amplifier was a Fender Champion “600”, very basic amp, about a year goes by and i get a Blackstar TVP;ID15 and 4 years goes by and my recording amp of choice is the Fender
Hahaha man, I felt bad for myself after watching this. I still have and am using that same amp. So far I've recorded four covers with it but I had to mess with it just to get a decent tone and even then I still don't like the sound all that much. Now I'm debating if I should record at all until I get something better which is definitely what I was gonna do anyway cuz yeah I agree that this amp is just good for practice and the tones are a little wacky.
Hey Andrew. The line six has a preset volume and eq/effects on each channel. My spider classic is loud asf but when I slightly adjust the volume it shoots down to what is my proper level lol
My first guitar and amp was an Epiphone Les Paul Special II and a Line 6 Spider IV 75W amp. Certainly not the best, but it was something when I was 12.
Started out on a little crate practice amp and eventually traded it for a spider iv, played it for like 6 years or more and loved it, even had a passable tone for recording in a mix with some eq in post, I feel like the hate is mostly band wagon hate. I kept it and loved it all the way up until I got a "real amp" and got a katana
I put an extra eminence swamp thang in my spider jam and it sounds pretty good, for a bedroom amp lol. Can't have my 120 watt tube half stack at home after all lol.
I still use a 120 watt Spider III sometimes even performed with it. Got compliments on my tone from an experienced guitar player who would perform more too. It's a good amp if you know your craft and EQ it properly.
The Spider amp should be in some hall of fame. Without it, I doubt we would have gotten the Cube or later on the Katana. It set the standard for what should be a beginner practice amp.
I had a 75 watt Spider III and I thought it was great haha I still think it was better than the peavy vyper or what ever it was called, and the other solid state combos of the time! lol
I still have my old Line 6 Spider IV 30 watt amp somewhere laying around. Used it for years when I first started playing until I actually started playing gigs. It really is a fairly decent practice amp honestly. Obviously would never ever use it for a gig or recording but for practice there are definitely worse options out there.
Had this as a kid and it's still in my closet lmao. It was better once I got a zoom dm2.1 but the price at the time in 2010/11 was great for a beginner. I know just play through my pc and sometimes spark amp

Could you review the boss katana 2, I have the head version and wanted to see what you thought
Mind telling us about that mouse pad you have there, Andrew?
Those pads are comfy
( . )( . )
I'm betting its an Albedo mouse pad
This video is fucking me up. My old friend had that mouse pad & gave me a Spider 3 amp
It’s the same kind Ola Englund got.
I used it for raw black metal sound and it was awesome. I was never able to make that harsh buzzsaw sound on my laney ironheart or boss katana. So I guess it has its own place in my heart. :)
I used Spider II 150W head for death metal very long, and it was quite good :) especially with Marshall cab :)

That DOOM 3 riff didn't deserve this lmao
No it didn’t 😂
Absolutely
My line 6 is staring at me from across my room lol

The good ol days. I used to hang my cheap headset mic on a tripod and record into audacity.
Same. With an acoustic guitar.
I did the same, but didn't have a tripod, so I just had it hanging over the edge of the desk.
Hell Yeah. Occasionally we'd put it into a drinking cup for "depth".
Me: Hey that tone sounds familiar.
Also me a few seconds later: Wait that's my tone.

Sounds like the perfect amp for true norwegian black metal
I should’ve listened to the headphone warning
I don't even have headphones in and I listened to it

Can’t wait to profile this thing with the Quad Cortex
Ayyyy, that DOOM 3 riff. Cool!

There's way worse amps.
This is just the worst considering how many units it sold.
