How to replace Timex watch battery with no special tools

- I like low-cost Timex Readers with the wonderful Indiglo luminous dial function. The batteries last a few years and are simple to replace. You can buy a similar Timex used on eBay for $10. My current Timex watch had stopped glowing when activated so I replaced the battery. I used a very small regular screwdriver to pry open the back by accessing the tiny lip marked on the back by a tiny pointer.
In the past, after I replaced the battery I was able to press the back of the watch in with my fingers and thumbs. It helps to add a little silicone grease on the gasket to make the back snap in place easier.
This particular time I did not have any silicone grease and replacing the watch back was very difficult. I ended up placing the watch on a stiff box on a table with some give to it and used a simple piece of wood to press uniformly on the back of the watch to snap it in place. You might try also a paperback book and a towel to rest the watch on to provide some give to keep the watch from being damaged when you are pressing the back on. But don't risk using this method with an expensive watch or if you have an alternative that is less risky.
Using this method risks breaking the crystal. If you go on Amazon you can buy low-cost watch presses for about $15 which will reduce the chance of ruining your crystal.
The silicon I usually use is silicon spray and I add it to the Q tip. Do not spray on the watch any lubricant. You can buy silicone grease also in a tube. Use it very sparingly, you do not want to gum up the watch, you only want to add a tiny amount to the gasket to aid in its realignment with the watch.

I had a heck of a time putting the cover back on to the watch. My fingers are not that strong. I watched other videos to see what other suggestions were and I made a modification on a suggestion I saw: I placed my watch face down on a folded kitchen towel on the kitchen counter. I put the battery in and put the cover back on the back of the watch. I used the wooden bottom of my hammer handle making sure that it covered the entire watch cover (this makes sure that the pressure you're about to exert is evenly distributed making it easy for the cover to snap in place). I pushed down on the back cover and listened/felt the cover snap into place and voila(!) it WORKED! The back cover of my watch was back in place! I hope this is clear and that it is helpful to someone. Cheers!

Thanks for the advice. I decided to use both my thumbs on opposite sides of the cover and made sure to apply equal pressure on both sides and it snapped back in place.
I used a C clamp with folded cardboard on the glass face, fitted the back plate on and then screwed it in until I heard a click.

Bingo, after several attempts over the past few days I got the back off with the help of your video. I've had a Timex since I was a kid "Takes a Licking and Keeps On Ticking." My Indiglo watch is a woman's that takes a CR 1216. I'm now pushing 80 and guess I have lost some strength in my hands. I had no idea there was a teeny tiny "tab" at about 2 o'clock on the watch back and couldn't see one. After getting the back off, I got out a magnifying glass and found the tab.....I marked it with a black permanent marker and if the ink rubs off, I will use the 2 o'clock position. Thank you....I've always been a do-it-yourselfer and you made my day.

Thank-you for your helpful video! I have the same watch. I carefully removed the back with a small pocket knife. After replacing the battery, I placed the watch on a thin foam pad. I then popped the back on with a small vitamin bottle, bottle cap on top of watch back. Luckily, I had a bottle lid that was virtually the same diameter as the watch back. I didn't think it would be so easy! All the best.

Thank you for your suggestion on securing the ‘back’ in place. It’s the only one that worked for me out of 4 suggestions that I tried. I bought a battery replacement kit and didn’t know enough to be aware that a watch case press might be needed or even existed.

Peter Holman here. I think Timex were having a laugh when designing this watch back. 40 minutes of my life battling to do something which should take seconds. A simple screw thread would surely be better. So, ultimately, my successful method was to place watch face flat down on a strong and smooth wooden table. Then I upturned a plastic 2 litre full lemonade bottle, and applied the plastic top to the centre of the watch back. I got my belly/chest onto the bottom of the bottle to add extra force and control. I worked the bottom in a circular motion while applying intense force. Then the hallelujah closing, but not with a definite snap noise. But back is definitely now tightly on. I think what saves face from cracking is that it is set flush with or slightly below the my metal case in which it sits. Happy Days. Best to get shop to do it. Crazy design. Hello Peter, I certainly can't disagree with you. Replacing the back is a lot more difficult than opening it. I have other watches that can be popped back together with my thumbs. On the other hand, I get most of my Timex reader watches use for 10 bucks and I don't know of a better watch for that price.

Easy off thanks to you. Getting back on not so easy. Tried your suggestion and a few others on this thread with no success. Then it came to me. I used my Irwin Quick Grip clamp and it worked perfectly, plus it's got rubber cushions on the tips, so no scratches. Just keep squeezing the trigger handle until you hear the snap.

I couldn't get the back off of my watch and looked at your video for help. You marked your watch with an arrow. That did the trick, but in so doing I noticed that there is a small notch at that very spot. So, no need to scratch back. Just look for the notch.

For my timex watch the back cover was raised in the center. I had to drill a hole in my block with a 1" spade bit so that the wood block would push on the edges of the cover. I used a mouse pad to cushion the front of the watch. Worked like a charm.

I'm sure there are variances in different models and individual watches, but for mine, it is legit impossible to get the back to click back in place without breaking the crystal. I've tried many of the below suggested workarounds to no avail. I'm pushing SO HARD and it doesn't care. I don't have a watch press or vice and shouldn't need one.
I used to brag about how it was such a great watch for only $30 but now the cheapness has finally reared its head. What a pain in the ass.

Backplace was hard to put back. Align the Timex name like the clock numbers in front. There is a small gap on plate which must match the settings wheel. Press plate hard using fingers only, don't do as he showed. There may be a couple of clicks like the plate comes back up at opposite ends, but eventually you feel a satifying settlement push without the click, and plate is settling in.

Sorry, but that did not work for me. After 15 minutes of trying that, all I got was some very sore fingers. You must have steel in your fingers and the grip of a superman!!
Oh that was 10 months ago. My Timex Indiglo still working, it has lost less than 1 min since then - not too bad. Time flies :). Wonder what AI would make of that phrase? @@user-vg6on6qe6q
My battery will not snap in and stay
First and last timex for me! In the future I'll stick to watches with screws. Next time the battery dies, it's going on eBay for a few dollars.
I can't argue with you I would prefer screws over the snap on back but it's still a great watch especially when you can get them used on eBay for just a few dollars
I was at the holy crap stage for so long my fingers hurt. Finally succeeded and it 'only' took me about an hour to get that back on again. I have the same watch but just smaller. My fingers hurt but got it done without breaking the glass. Last time I used pliers in too far instead of near the front and back edge cushioned with a tea towel at the glass side and broke the glass plus displaced the minute hand.
I bought another identical watch so I could use old one for spare parts. I'd rather take my time and hear about 20 snaps only to find the other side popped up than to risk breaking the glass again by hurrying. Fingers to hold it on one side are not strong enough. I can always get the back off easily enough, but that back cover has heard a few of my swear words each time getting it back on.
I thought there might be an extra trick I'm missing but did it the same way you did, except used pliers. Tried all the other options of pressing on a wooden stick and pushing down with things. At least your holy crap made me laugh. Thanks for the help.

Well, my wife gets a new Timex. I smashed the crystal while trying to snap the back on. I used cloth and a set of pliers but it takes a lot of pressure and the glass gave out; no bueno! Wish I had gone with the wooden spoon idea first.

Looks like most analog Times watches going back about 20 years are a real SOB when getting that back cover on. I ended up wrapping a piece of cardboard around the front and back and carefully using plyers to crimp it shut.

Watched your watch video,very nice. Thx to reseal my back I used a wood clamp and and a paint stick to cover the glass. I just clamped around it seemed to have worked. Just thought I’d share thank you.

Just buy a watch press for $20. I was so tired of cracking the glass of every snap on watch I replaced the battery on. It's important to use the right tool for the job.
The CR2016 battery I'm trying to put in this identical watch keeps slipping out of the insufficient hold down clips. I noticed when you were taking out the old battery that you had taped it so I guess I will tape mine down too or get the new battery brand you used and try that. Thank you for risky on your kitchen table approach. I'm getting the press! Cheers!

@@RobbsHomemadeLife I put two thin foam pads on the upper side of the battery so the back helps holding the battery down. Also my indiglo is stopping at 1:30 am and is struggling to change day and date wheels. I took a risk and sprayed it with crc contact cleaner and it improve the engagement of the date adjust which was non existent before. We'll see if it makes it through the night. Will report findings and cheers to the Timex legacy.
@@RobbsHomemadeLife The CRC contact cleaner, which will not harm plastic, was successful in restoring full functionality to my Timex Indiglo. Another contact cleaner is called Deoxit and Deoxit Gold which may work as well. In Deoxit there is a lubricating feature that may be even better. I'll try that too. In order to get the back back in place, I used a thin piece of wood to protect the crystal and some Craftsman Professional Robo-grip Pliers with nylon caps. The nylon caps wont scratch the metal back of the watch, and the wood help evenly smooth the force on the crystal.

Beware!!! I used the c-clamp with cardboard trick. Dented the back case as well as breaking the watch. I also stood on it, used a resuscitation style but nothing worked. Just a warning, if you plan on doing this you could break the watch. Goodbye my 20 yr old timex expedition. You were a good partner.

Hi. Thanks for this video. Like so many others, I struggled to get the back onto the watch (aka clock bracelet, as identified by one of my daughter’s students). I found that by pulling out the stem, the back slipped easily in place.

I used 1” socket off of a ratchet set to replace the back. It let me apply pressure evenly all the way around.

To anyone still struggling with this, this is what worked for me: I put the back case in the freezer of my fridge for about 4 hours so that it contracted. Next, I lay the watch flat on my carpet ensuring the surface was straight. I then placed the back cover on it lightly then slowly stepped on it with one leg and before I could apply my full weight, I heard the satisfying snapping sound. It had clicked in place! CAUTION:
1. Make sure your carpet is thick and clean as tiny particles may cause the glass to break when you apply pressure.
2. I did this trusting that Timex makes quality glass even for the lower end watches but beware it could break; it's not a sure thing.
3. I weigh 60kg so this may help you measure how much pressure you choose to apply.

You may want to get a watch press. Work great on round and not so round watches.
Good to see Lithium battery in basic model
The arrow on my Timex watch points to where the tool goes to remove the backing. The back of the watch has a little notch in it that goes around the watch winder pin. Yours looked like that too. Surprised that you lined up the arrow with the watch winder spindle.
When i did that it popped back in with minimal effort!

To put the back of my Expedition chrono back on after changing out the battery, I first used a q-tip to put a little lubricant around the edge. I then used a Quick-grip mini bar clamp with rubber pads to get the back in. I just needed to make sure the rubber pads were a little bigger than the face and back of the watch, and that the cover was not partially clipped in...instead it needs to be outside of the watch when you start to squeeze the grip together.

Some watches are impossible to close without a press.
Harbor Freight has inexpensive Watch back Removal tool. Also you can get a Tiny pouch of Bulb silicone grease at front counter. FURTHER.... You could use a Harbor Freight ," Tiny" , I mean the smallest.... rubber jaw squeeze Rachet clamp, and gently Rachet down and compress Back of watch until it clicks into place, HOWEVER... I believe the Harbor Freight Watch Tool may have a feature to compress back on. Hope These ideas Help.

I'm looking at getting an ACME super duty industrial size hydraulic vise. (Should fit in a standard 18 x20' garage) The one that uses two workers. One to operate the controls.and the other to spot the pressure points of the back. Since these times watches are that valuable, it's well worth the investment and makes the job a snap.
Make sure it comes with standard right-handed frammerjammers. Don't let them try to sell you a metric left-handed frammerjammers.

Soooooo, I don't know if you are familiar with automotive maintenence etc. but I will ask anyway. After paying a hefty amount for some front end work in the Fall, the tech told me to grease the front end parts that have grease zerks every 6 months. So, I bought a quality grease gun with an 18" flex hose. Followed the directions in setting it up and on the very first zerk , the coupler did not want to release.
Soooooooooo, the question is (hopefully you have a little experience) : Is this just a typical experience and greasing these kind of things are just a bear? Thanks!
I have never seen this battery brand before, I think it is not sold in Brazil. I use Sony but now it hás its name changed into Murata.
You should always turn tHe watch off by pulling the crown out a couple of clicks before sticking a new battery in it or cleaning it you could short it out

Just destroyed my indigo. Could not get the cover back on. Eventually bent the back. Very frustrating.
I have this exact watch (it was my Dad's and I love it) but I cannot get the back to snap back on without risking breaking the crystal. Any tips?
Make sure whatever you are using to press the back on is uniformly flat and larger than the case.. The crystal is level with the case. There are several commenters that left tips I did not have in the video.
Take it to a jeweler. They won't charge you to put the back on. Inconvenient but better than risking a broken watch. 😊

The battery numbers such as CR2016 have meanings. The CR2016 is 20 mm in diameter and 1.6 mm in height.
These are the only ones I am sure of.

I tried numerous times to pry open my mother's Timex Indiglio (where the arrow is).
This back cover will not budge, for some reason.
Probably will have to take it to a nearby jeweler for assistance.

I'm having the same problem with the same watch. I can see the small notch but it is not lined up with the handle so I can't really get any leverage. I guess I'll take to a jeweler and pay more to have them open and close it than I did for the thrift store watch and new battery. curses, my frugal ways are foiled again!

I'm a neophyte to battery replacement in watches. The "Holy Cr**!" exclamation--might be solved by placing the watch's back bezel into your fridge's freezer for a tad, whilst placing the watch with the new inlaid battery over an incandescent bulb for a few seconds to heat it gently. COLD to shrink the bezel diameter and HEAT to expand the opening cavity. WOILA!

I have one from my dad who recently passed. I noticed moister on the glass on the inside. Any idea how to make it water resistant again?
I'm not an expert but I think if you have moisture inside water may have gotten in through the stem. Or the seal on the back is not tight. You could put it in a container with some silica gel or rice in someplace warm and it might remove the moisture. I'm not sure how I would seal the stem if it was leaking there but you should be able to see if the back is on correct. I shower with mine frequently and don't have an issue. Good luck

Ian that's odd. I wonder if the battery is dead orifice stem has been pushed and disabled it.
Also, the correct replacement battery wouldn't snap in place. It kept popping out. I fiddled with it too much and I think something broke. I just went to Walmart and bought another watch & threw the old one away. The old watch looked similar as yours.

Well I may just try to pry the backs off some my old watches that I have kept in a box over the years. I even have an Indiglo. I purchased a windup watch a few years back, just because. It has a glass back so you can see the inner workings. Hardly wear a watch nowadays. I wonder if a fitbit is hard to open?

use plier and old thick sock to squeeze back lid in instead of use bare finger is the easy way believe me.

Hola! Compre un Timex de segunda mano que lleva bien el tiempo, pero el Indiglo le falla, solo se ilumina un poco debajo del 6. traté cambiándole la pila pero sigue igual, que podría hacer?
Notas importantes:
1 la pila por si sola parece botarse del reloj, no se queda en su lugar, al abrir el reloj casi sale volando, hasta que se hace presión con el sujetador del plástico interno y la tapa trasera es que se queda en su lugar
2 Además, la tapa trasera parece ser la de otro reloj, ya que marca una resistencia al agua de 100 m, mientras que en el dial del reloj dice 50 m.

My husband has always changed my batteries. We had a heck of a time getting the backs off of my two Timex indigo watches and now even after following all the u tube tips to get the backs to snap back on - nope! Love this style but will never buy another one.
Guess I'll just have to go cheaper and pitch when batteries die. Very annoying. Come on, Timex, is this your "new normal"? :^)
I'm leaving a rely to my whine of an hour ago. My husbands little work bench has a built in "vice" on the end which looks like an end piece of the bench with a handle that turns it. I had decided to try it as a last resort. I figured it would break the crystal but I could not use them without the backs anyway so....I put a doubled cotton pad over the crystal and
turned. I didn't really hear a snap but could not see any gaps. It worked...on both of them! I may not be able to get them off when time again to change the batteries but for now...:^).
Hey blessed thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment about your experience with putting the back on your Timex. A couple of viewers left comments similar to yours where they used a vice and after thinking about it I don't know why I didn't do that myself because I have a vice on workbench. I'm glad it worked out for you.
@@RobbsHomemadeLife Thanks, Rob. I "viced" both my indigos while my husband was gone (he tried and could not do it) and now I'm really "milking" my how-to-discovery by not telling him how I did it. After 48y of marriage you have to be creative in keeping things interesting. :^D If he asked me again, I'll tell him. We'll see. :^D
Im just changing the battery of my timex watch on my own without tools and i found it frustrating 😥 My hand not that strong and the battery is move a side when i try to click in the cover hufffftt... So i hv to try it again at the beginning. I feel exhausted just by now to think about it 😂

Is there a trick to get the battery in? Are there springs? Yours just went right in mine will not lie flat by itself and will not make contact.
Herb the only thing I can tell you is to make sure it's the same as the battery you took out. I'm sure you've already checked that and it must be frustrating but I don't know what else to tell you mine just fit right in sorry I can't be more help

It looks like there is a small piece of spring metal on one side which I assume you push the battery against and then it should "drop" into position. I have tried this to my wits end and it will not work. It seems that on the opposite side from the spring metal are two tiny clips which are now pressed in so that the battery will not seat. At this point I guess I have ruined two watches.
Herb if it wasn't such a devil to put the back in place after removing it I would take mine off to see what it looks like to help you out. I seem to remember that my battery would slide underneath a piece of metal I'm going to go online and see if I can find schematic or photograph or whatever

I'm having the same problem you did replacing the back. It simply won't snap back on. Maybe some silicon lube will help?
Hello Woody, silicone lube will definitely help. Look at some of the responses the viewers made. A few people had some very good tips that were different from my method.
@@RobbsHomemadeLife This tip worked right away. Silicone faucet grease on a Q-tip, very lightly coated the edge and gasket on the cap side only. Used the butt of my small hammer to apply downward pressure, glass face down on a thick placemat. Heard a small click, pressed down again, another small click and it was on. Wow! Before that I tried the above tricks with the piece of wood, side of a wood handle, but not any pliers or makeshift clamps.
I was able to pop the back in but if that Crystal had been raised I would have broken it. It looks like I'm good for another seven years.

There must be a special tool to remove the back. My smallest jeweler's screwdriver just slips out. Any suggestions for something else to use?
Jimmy, when I pry mine up the arrow has to be pointed at one of the post on the side that hold the strap. That way I can use the little screwdriver and wedge it over the top of the metal post and use it like a lever.
I understand your struggle I cant get my cover back on seems kinda ridiculous that they design it so it wont just snap back in place...I noticed yo said heres the arrow am I specifically looking for a mark where the cover will latch on to?
On the outer circle near the X in TIMEX is a small arrow mark that us useful when opening as it indicates where there is a small gap a tool can be inserted. Several people have commented they used a clamp to press the back in place, you might try that along with a dab o silicone lubricant on the o ring.

I like my Timex, it’s been with me for a long time now. I put it away a few years ago when it stopped working. Yesterday I decided to buy a new battery and try to revive my old friend. It started working as soon as I replaced the battery, but from one day to the other, I found that it wasn’t holding the correct time. It was about seven minutes off. At this rate, I’ll be adjusting it daily. Any suggestions?

I opened it, changed the cell but now I am struggling with putting the back cover. It's not my watch my aunt will be 😡
Check out the responses some people have left in the comment section a few people found different ways to put the back on that may be safer than the one I showed.
I am going nuts trying to get the back on without breaking the glass.
You can try lubricating with silicone.
Changed the battery in mine, it still doesn't work though. I've been trying to find out why, it was passed down to me so it can't be replaced.
Send it back to Timex they will fix it for a reasonable price...
