"What rolls downstairs, alone or in pairs, rolls over your neighbor's dog.
It's great for a snack, it fits on your back, it's log log log.
      It's Lo-og, It's Lo-og, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
      It's lo-og, it's lo-og, it's better than bad, it's good."
Sorry but the vintage commercial gave me this Ren and Stimpy earworm. 😂

Hi, Don. Would you help me? I can't see any of your posts after Oct 2022 and can't even message you on Patreon. I've messaged Patreon cust service already but this happened last year too when my yearly subscription charged. I have no clue why...

Thanks Don, that was very informative. A black light is an important evaluating tool for me when sourcing vintage costume and fine jewelry. Amber and lucite fluoresce in black light as does glass made with uranium, selenium, or cadmium. I did not know that is useful for paper as well.

Great explanation. I am a vintage photo collector for 30 plus years and want to add a few more points.
Paper whiteners were first used in the mid 1950s, so it can be sometimes questionable for that decade. Also, about 19th century photo papers, the most widely used was "albumen" paper which was made using egg whites to suspend the photo sensitive silver particles to the surface of the base paper. To the trained eye, albumen has a very unique look, feel and tone. The fake Custer photo has a caramel'ish brown tone that could never be passed off as albumen paper. Also, just from the video I can see the surface texture looks different from albumen paper.
Even more, from the 1840s up to the late 1850s, the main paper used was called "salted paper". This was the forerunner of albumen and is very easy to manufacture yourself, so therefore can easily be faked. All a forger needs is a vintage or period sheet of paper, sensitize it, then expose it with a negative. There is no way to test this other than being an expert. This has fooled museums, auction houses and collectors in the past.
One last thing for more modern photos from WW II up to the present. Some forgers are using ink jet printers to make their fakes, then toning the paper in ordinary tea to make them look aged. But with a simple lupe check you can see pixels, which are little squares that make up the image. A few years back I bought a WW II image by a famous Life Magazine photographer on Ebay When it arrived in the mail, I could tell right away it was a fake. The photo agency stamp on the back was so poorly faked with an inkjet printer, I could see the letters in the stamp were badly pixilated and the ink bled in to the paper.
    Hope this helps.

Another item to get or carry with you while sourcing. Is get a jewelers loupe. It is a lot easier tinder the rosettes magnified than always being able to use a black light. The rosettes will look way more precise and perfect. The older printing wasn’t as refined if that makes sense.

Fantastic video, Don, very informative. Another tip I would add is to look for a logo from the printing paper brand, which might help a lot to date the photo. I recently aquired some photos from the 1950's, and they looked a bit too white for me (not fluorescent, but I would expect them to be a little more yellow), but from the research I did, it seems like that paper, made by Agfa-Brovira, was top of the line at the time, and I found other photos from that time period on the internet that looked just like mine.
I'd love to see more of this style of video, since I sell mostly collectibles, and I am a collector myself, so there is always a lot to learn!

Very informative. Thank you. Do you or others add “black light verified / tested” or something along those lines to your descriptions? It seems like that would be needed these days with the increase of fakes.

Hi and thank you so much for videos. I am encountering this person on ebay who has targeted one of my listings. It is a Madballs from the 80s that my uncle bought for me when I was a child. I know for a fact I got it in the 80s. This buyer has made multiple IDs and keeps telling me the Madballs is from 2018 and I should lower the price to $5. I explained how I was gifted the item and I am certain about it and even blocked the buyer after multiple harassments and he still keeps making new IDs and sending the same message even after I reported them. Is there a smarter way to deal with these type of buyers?

When you refer to “modern paper” are you referring to gelatin silver paper print which could be 20, 30 years old or are you referring to digital prints which it sounded like later when you referred to “ printing ...out”? I was having a hard time distinguishing which you were referring too a modern gelatin silver print or a digital print which look very different

Are these Pictures like this and the tin pictures worth anything? I have a lot of them from my grandma, aunts and stuff that’s in old wooden shoe boxes.
I have a habit of not selling anything and when it comes to family it’s even harder for me to get rid of the stuff but I have no idea who any of these are other then they are family from the 1800s and idk when the tin pictures are but they are creepy looking
