Omg this song is amazinggg (; btw is it gonna be called "Moby Dick" ? or are you gonna think of something crazy like "Ishmael, Ahab and the Great Whale of 1851"
If it makes you feel any better, it's not about squeezing actual sperm as we know it- sperm whales were hunted for a fatty substance in their head called spermaceti (from what I've looked up, Melville shortnened this word to "sperm" in Moby Dick, thus it's referred to that in the song), as well other substances (ambergris) So basically they're cutting up the whale and then manually processing the spermaceti for stuff like oil. In conclusion, rummaging through a whale carcass for a fatty substance isn't exactly the prettiest thing, but it kind of beats the first thing that comes to mind.
Such a poetic and lovely metaphor for the end of this show. This cast is so close, and it warms my heart to hear your beautiful voices in comraderie. Thank you, Dave Malloy, for inspiring us fans. May the comet blaze forever!
Dave I love you so much. I never got to see the comet but you've got me obsessed with war and peace and you're amazing. Also, I've been crying nonstop since this weekend started. You're amazing. Keep up the great work. Also ghost quartet is the best and I can't wait to see some of your new work
Mr. Malloy, I like all the Comets fans are in truth very very sad because your Pierre and Natasha are coming to an end. Yet, every play that has placed its feet on stage has also to stop its feasty din and merry-go-round so we, the public ( virtual on in real life )can appreciate what a marvelous carrousel it's been to ride on. We wish to see its reappearance some time soon upon another stage, maybe abroad, that would be a blessing wherever you go. Many many thanks for your gifted musical mind and talents GOD BLESS you and all in the cast may your last performance be recorded to be cherished later on, I thank you, MC in Mexico
Also, "I wish we all could be more open, wish we all could be more true"? That shit hits hard. If it's about what I think it's about (our boys Herman and Nathaniel, and in extension, the book as a whole), like. Ow.
Oh my god this amazing. Please tell me Ishmael ends up holding Queequeg's hand by the end of this, also this speaks so much to Herman Melville's relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne and I love that well done sir I'm gonna go cry now
I’m thrilled to tell you, that while I haven’t personally seen the show, this is exactly what happens. I’m actually pretty sure that right before the song starts, Queegqueg says “hey Ish, come sit by me, I’ll show you how it’s done”
Great Comet has been a daily listen for the past 3.5 years (and unlikely to stop now), so I'm really looking forward to to what you've got in store for us, Dave. Thanks for this fabulous sneak peek.
I would listen to anything Dave writes honestly, I thought I hit the limit when I listened to a musical with a talking bear, but now I'm hyped for this
Well, I'm supposed to be studying for exams, but here I am listening to a -slightly homoerotic- song about sperm whale oil on repeat. I think it's time well spent LOL
You’re so lucky! I wish I could get to see his work, PERIOD. And I’m all the way here in California(prays that either the Great Comet FINALLY does it’s US sit down performances, or at least that Octet tours, in LA anytime soon!)!
I'm still not over this. I watched this a year ago because I love Great Comet and thought "cool okay" but three days ago I finished Moby-Dick, which I'm pretty sure has changed my life, and my friend reminded me about this and it's just so beautiful and good and this musical is going to amazing
Mr. Dave Malloy plus the greatest cast of all in Broadway :THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 my sincerest respects to you and each wondrous actor involved in your several on-stage presentations of your "Pierre and Natasha" we feel blessed by your gift and we're looking forward to your next one hit Broadway musical on that famous mythic American whale, best of heartfelt-wishes to each, a sweet kiss full of tenderness for your each writing hand 💋✍️💋✍️ GOD BLESSINGS Post Scriptum: Please record and deliver on Blue-Ray DVD the last Comet performance at The Imperial and hopefully you may do an international tour in the future, including LatinAmerican countries, my honest gratitude from Mexico City º namaste September 2nd, 2017
Alright quick question: the chorus is nearly the exact same progression of the chorus of Johnny Cash's ring of fire... That being said, was this a deliberate, conscious decision or musical allusion of some sort? Love the song and can't wait for the musical, but I just had to ask
Steph Piano But what about Lucas? Dear, bewildered, and awkward Lucas What about Lucas? Rich, unhappily married Lucas? What about Lucas? What about Lucas? What about Lucas?
wait . . . . is this supposed to be a joke? there is no way this is an actual song. also, where is lucas steele?! he is why i clicked, be honest. he is never in any of these behind the scenes cast videos, to be honest. :( :( :( :(
Omg this song is amazinggg (; btw is it gonna be called "Moby Dick" ? or are you gonna think of something crazy like "Ishmael, Ahab and the Great Whale of 1851"

This video raised my grades, cleared my skin, watered my crops, and cured my depression.
im not ready to give this show up. not yet. not so soon.
I have no idea why they're singing about sperm but my soul just ascended from hearing it's beauty, god bless this cast (they deserved so much better!)
Ahhhhh thanks, the things you learn on the internet...
I see your Octet profile picture 👀👀a person of taste
i've never felt so deeply about a song about sperm.
The power of Dave Malloy
tHE HARMONIES
also everyone in this cast is pure okay
I hate Dave Malloy for making me cry over a song about squeezing sperm
But at the same time god bless him
Steph Piano of course

The harmony in this is amazing but I don't see how they can sing it without laughing. That's professional actors for you I guess.
Only Dave could make me stan something this fucking weird

And 2 years later, this musical will premier at the American Repertory Theatre. I'm so excited to see his work again
You’re so lucky! I wish I could get to see his work, PERIOD. And I’m all the way here in California(prays that either the Great Comet FINALLY does it’s US sit down performances, or at least that Octet tours, in LA anytime soon!)!

I'd still see it.
the only thing better than the great comet cast singing about squeezing sperm is them being in great comet
Or better yet, seeing this same cast in the ever to tempting US sit down productions of this show(fingers crossed)!
I would love like 1000% more Lauren tbh, but I will be there for any incarnation of this.
