  • Could this be the first Model S MOT in the UK? Not far off I'd bet and certainly the first on TH-cam. Oh and it looks like my brakes are going to last a good while :-)

    MOT test is Ministry of Transport test, not motor ordinance test. No surprise you've passed brilliantly! One unsung benefit of EVs is their considerably lower brake usage due to the regen, I still feel there is a large stigma around EVs that isn't progressing quick enough to keep up with the technology - a shame really

      steven kutschat My plugin got sold to me like a car so I drive with both but if he showed you his brake or mine they're rusty as sin from most of the regen picking up with proper slowing down.

      We have WOF warrant of fitness same new car 3 years then once a year, although maybe distance is better, as a Taxi or courier could do very high mileage with lots of wear and tear in that 3 years...

      @SilverCanary1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, in full it's a Ministry Of Transport Inspection. Typically referred to as M.O.T. Most new cars are exempt for the first 3 years of registration.

    Motor Ordnance Test?? There's no ordnance on a car (unless it's James Bond's). It just stands for Ministry of Transport; a legacy term for the old department and hence MOT Test - shortened to MOT over many years of use.

      @JamesCookeVlogs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a safety test either, it's a roadworthiness test. Seeing how some (most?) max out on monthlies and can't afford upkeep (tyres, brakes etc) I wouldn't mind if it was annual from new.

    The same test is done in Germany by TÜV ( Technischer Überwachungsverein = Association for Technical Inspection) also Dekra or GTÜ.
    Here, new vehicles are checked for the first time after 3 years and then every two years thereafter.
    On all vehicles: lighting, horn, windshield wiper incl. Washing system, brakes front and rear, condition of the tires, visual inspection under the vehicle on the lifting platform, play of the wheels.
    And in the case of vehicles with an internal combustion engine, the exhaust gas analysis is also carried out.

    James, I had my MS MoT on Monday this week. It was quite amusing. The tester called me over when he wanted to test the headlight beams. Everytime he got out of the car the lights went out so he wasn't able to check them! I wasn't going to show him how to keep them on, but he invited me to remain in the car whilst he performed all the tests, including the brakes etc. Quite fun really. But to top it all, he asked "where's the handbrake?" He disappeared to his computer to check a few things to make sure he was doing everything right, then returned exclaiming "I need put a "deselerometer" (spelling?) on the floor and we need to take the car for a spin - you can drive". I am certain that it was a ruse to get a ride a Tesla just for the sake of it, but once done, I offered to show him what it can really do, 0-60, you know what I mean......I think he enjoyed the experience, and of course it passed the test....

    Sorry James ... Motor Ordinance Test? Nope. MOT simply stands for Ministry Of Transport!
    Wikipedia states: 'The MOT test (Ministry of Transport, or simply MOT) is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in Great Britain for most vehicles over three years old ...'. Although the Ministry Of Transport was replaced years ago by the Department Of Transport and more recently, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), it seems the various government departments through the years have been too lazy to give the MOT test a more suitable name.
    However, this was a really encouraging post though James. And I did hit the 'like' button! As many UK drivers discover, even relatively new ICE cars have an appalling tendency to exit an MOT test with a litany of faults to be sorted at eye watering expense. MOT tests on EVs? Bang go dealership servicing profits. As I understand it, UK dealers tend to sell ICE vehicles near cost and make up profits on follow-up servicing. When the penny finally drops, I reckon UK Dealerships are not going to like EVs any more than US Auto Dealerships do.
    Finally, what an awesome present you've got for Jasper! He's going to have nearly as much fun in his Tesla as you do in yours!

    Garages being able to work on EV's and other 'exotic' cars often require specific reading instruments, which are expensive and only viable if loads of cars of that brand are in need of repairs.

    Hi James. Great video.
    I was surprised to hear you say that you thought 3 years was too early for an MOT test.
    I totally disagree.
    You have done 75000 miles in your car in 3 years.
    Imagine some numpty in a diesel Corsa wheelspinning around and stamping on his brakes daily.
    By 3 years old, that car could be speeding towards Jasper on his little bike.
    Wouldn't you agree it is nice to know that the brakes and tyres etc are scrutinised by a professional every year?
    Southern Ireland used to have their first MOT years later than ours and there were some real death traps on the roads.
    Keep smiling.
    Cheers.

    Where I live (Washington State, USA), the state or federal government doesn't inspect passenger cars for safeness. I am not sure about commercial vehicles. Crash tests and tire safety tests are done at the factory or lab. We used to have emission tests but they have stopped those for new cars. Brake inspections are voluntary. It is the responsibility of the owner to follow the recommended schedule for inspections listed in the owners manual.

    Where I am there isn't a tesla service centre it's a 3-4hr drive time plus a 14hr ferry ride so local mechanics need to be able to fix especially if it's undrivable due to any issue. Yet people do have Teslas not a lot but still some.

    The MOT seems to be very basic compared to our NCT test especially on the suspension test,
    In our NCT test the car is picked up by a machine holding the wheels and literally shakes and flexes the suspension it looks like the machine is trying to tear the wheels of the car.

    I think it's worse to push down on the bonnet you could dent it. Many cars have aluminium bonnets and you just close it like a normal bonnet. Even our older Peugeot 3008 has an aluminium bonnet and you just drop it to close.

    • @leesweet9
      @leesweet9 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'd think so, but the instructions in the manual are quite clear. Use two hands, on both sides of the latch, never one hand, and not at the edge. :)

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Richmond Sweet That's so strange. What is the reason? Any idea? Maybe it's related to something of the car itself and not the fact that the bonnet is aluminium?

    • @leesweet9
      @leesweet9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may (just making this up) have something to do with the 'pop up' mechanism to protect pedestrians (when you run into them, and they bounce off the hood... it raises up to give them a cushion). I think it's just delicate aluminum/aluminium; people on TMC complain all the time about others creasing the front by not closing it 'correctly' and you *never* drop it to shut it. :) That's one reason the Model 3 has the edge of the lid 'hidden'; the S and X overhang and so get 'bent' all the time when people lean on them to close them.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richmond Sweet But other cars also have the pop up mechanism like all most Mercedes models and Volvo even has one with an external airbag for pedestrians heads. You can close the bonnet of these normally so it can't be that surely. Mercedes had these pop up hinges for years now and I've never seen them say to push it closed.

    • @leesweet9
      @leesweet9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SDav21 Yeah, I said I was making that up :). Everything I've read said it's just the material and probably the overhang, which makes it easy to bend the edge. That is fixed on the 3, of course.

    MOT doesn't go anywhere near the oily bits.
    have to say normally the advisories from MOT/servicing for my cars which have always tended to be bearing/seals in the suspension, and so on. engine/gearbox yes they need oil changes and so on, but they just work assuming they do get the oil changes and so on.
    I'd not expect a 3 year old car even a high milage one to need such stuff not for quite a few years.

    The thing with garages doing repairs on EV's is that they need to be properly trained for their own safety as well as the safety of the EV-owner. With the high voltage battery you need to know what you are doing otherwise it could get really dangerous. Apart from the danger of electric shock there is the risk of fire from cables not being properly tightened.
    Even the dealer where we bought our Kia Soul EV wasn't qualified to replace parts of the power train.

    I am somewhat surprised that your brakes are half worn.Tesla has to have more aggressive regen than my old Prius. I have 120.000 miles on it, and it seems to have half of its wear still ahead of it. Of course it is a lighter vehicle. My Volvo Estate is closer to the Tesla in weight and it does need harder braking sometimes for that reason.
    Perhaps my driving pattern is different. As a touring bicyclist I tend to coast to a stop and bleed off energy as slowly as I can. One of the reasons I waited for the Model 3.

    I agree that automakers should be required to release software and repair manuals so that consumers and mechanics alike can repair their cars. In socal there has been hybrid shops that are increasing becoming more and more common. They basically refurbish and repair the battery packs of the car at a much better price than the dealer. There is also a shop that repairs Tesla's and Volts. Tesla is wrong in limiting the supply of parts for the Model S. Individuals should be able to go to a service center and buy any part for their car.

    I agree the dealerships have a problem. I think they, and the manufacturers, see the handwriting on the wall: electric cars need less maintenance and that means less business fir tge back room, and less income. What will bring customers in? Meaningfully respectful, friendly service and support.

    I'm having my first MoT tomorrow. A bit worried since I'm second owner and car has new set of front tyres at only 28k miles (was 23k when I bought it). So what did the previous owner did with it? :)
    That thing with "not allowed to take off any panels" let my friend to get away with a rusty hole in the door.
    What comes to doing stuff on the car... Well, apart from engine and batteries, EV is just like any other car. It has suspension (and from my observation, roads in UK are getting worse), it has all the interior parts, windscreens (don't want to see the bill on replacing one on Model X), tyres, brakes, body elements etc. I've herad of few Nissan Leafs failing MoT due to nonoperational seatbelt and broken windscreen wiper or leaking seal on the joint (not really applicable to rear wheel drive cars though).
    Also, it's really nothing complicated to repair Tesla's battery either. Though, with the price garages in UK charge you for labour it is cheaper to replace a whole lot, I guess :)

    MOT in Northern Ireland is 4 years. However, think every year after that is nearly a bit unnecessary for newer cars.

    Arguably an MOT for an EV vehicle should be cheaper (as they complete it, in half the amount of time). Thoughts??

    EVs are just so much cleaner, think of an old BMW 5 series at 70,000 miles, i'm sure that heat and exhaust fumes of IC Engined cars encourage corrosion. That underside after 70,000 looks great.
    I read somewhere that very carefully driven EVs with good regen can have slightly rusty brake disks as they don't get much use. Testing of EVs must concentrate mainly on brakes, suspension and steering, not much else mechanical to test. Lights, frayed safety belts?
    Backstreet repair shops will become rare, a 'classic car' thing.

    I suppose investing in a decent sun hat for half a dozen days a year would be economic lunacy. Love the new EV BTW.

    Here in the US, some states require annual inspections. In North Carolina where I live, even a one week old Tesla has to get inspected. Not bad, but a tad annoying.

    James, be sure your and Jasper's sunglasses are UV filtered. even better if they would be polarized. don't use ultra cheap plastic. tinted.. glasses.. as they pass UV radiation into the eyes.
