As a designer myself I am seldom blown away by house designs. This completely blew my head off. From a distance, the house has echoes of Stone Henge, yet inside is homely and welcoming. 2.5 million though.

It is an amazing home, but I would feel a disconnect from the surrounds because you can't open the windows. In the kitchen/lounge, I think they could have had the large windows open if they had engineered it to have a central, rotating pivot at the top and bottom. That would allow you to angle them to catch or block the breeze as well. To be fair, it may still have required a central horizontal brace in the frame, but I would be happy with that if it meant I could open them.. Weirdly it looks like you can't open even the small windows in the house. Other than that, I quite like the design all up. The interior is spacious without being domineering and cold.
Everyone has their own style I guess. Definitely not something I would spend millions on. Wife didn't seem overly pleased with the kitchen, looked like it was a major point of contention, they way the husband was quiet and just nodded. The only problem with these types of homes is that if they were to sell it would only be only for a small group that finds that particular style appealing.
Not necessarily true about the kitchen. The discussion was about the outrageous money they spent on it. Being too generous with positive commentary could have rubbed the audience the wrong way. They were put on the spot-how could they justify spending as much on a kitchen some spend on their entire house?
Aside from the architecture and the cost - WHAT exactly is the point of this structure again.? What is its footprint? Is it sustainable? Not knowing the answer - this structure is a ode to the huge ego of the owner. Beauty is only in the eyes of the beholder...And this beholder - just doesn't see it...
I love modern architecture but you can go too far. The view is the the jewel in this project so why divide it up in to small parts just for design reasons. It negates the ‘raisin d`etre’ of the project. Overall the cost is obscene for a result which is far from satisfactory and spoils the landscape.
For a house that has a button for everything it’s really lacking manual buttons, switches. The tech hub will age in a way that won’t stand up to time. Still..I kinda like it.
Love it. The windows are sleek. I love how Kevin just can’t worry these people with money. Kevin loves to chat money. This guy just earns money at such a rate that there’s no need to sell a Ferrari to fund the build. He’s probably building a ski chalet in Courchevel 1850 next. Good luck to them.
I have to question how this was passed by planners. It is undoubtedly an amazing piece of architecture, as a fan of contemporary architecture, I like it, and I am aware that planners often look favourably at such levels of design. However, in an area of such outstanding beauty it stands out so much that far from enhancing the surroundings, it dominates them. I will not say that it must ruin the view because I like the drama of it, but I imagine that many do not like what it has achieved. Kevin says looking at the view causes his blood pressure to drop, but there must be a lot who see this monolithic metal giant as part of the view and whose blood pressure rises. I do not think that the owner made a very good attempt to justify the price of the kitchen...
I sometimes wonder what it's like to have too much money... it's a bit like in a video game like sims, when you use a cheat code to get unlimited money, at first it's fun, but then once you buy the best of everything the game becomes bland, boring and you don't want to play anymore. I spend so much time pre-occupied with getting rich, but I don't know if I would ever spend it like this when I get there, for sure I'd have my own crazy purchases, but honestly I think I would get more satisfaction giving some to people who need it. If I take so much from the earth and so much from the workers of the world, I should find a way make life better for by brothers and sisters.
It is a more industrial type of architecture due to the metal skin, I wouldn't say workplace as that would be more uniform than the random elements of this building, however as you only see the outside when you go in and out it will be offset by the view, that is the real architecture, it's the location darling, the house is secondary but it is unique, the inside of the house is not so stark as the outside and this softens it's appearance but it still is on an industrial scale, so you couldn't fit a £5,000 flat pack kitchen in it as it would look like a dolls house one. Like with all these big buildings it's the maintenance that's the leveller, if it costs too much to maintain it will not last, and it has to last to find an historical value, the true statement for all buildings and structures is their longevity and to serve a useful purpose to sustain that!?!
I LOVE this house , But I cannot get my head around it , it totally cooks my noodle the guy who designed it was a genius .some times it looks ugly but in total and detail its not .
I liked the interior myself, it was softer and less randomly stark. The ventilation in the summer might be a problem if the under house supply ventilation is not performing (and overhead extract doesn't perform either one presumes), but in the Winter it will be a blessing, I would imagine they have a doorway to an outside area with a barbecue kitchen, firepit and whatnot so I don't think they will be disadvantaged, and it is offset by large uninterrupted stunning views of the countryside, that is if course, if you like that sort of thing!?!
Of course this house is way over the top ??? But, IF you want to see Amazing houses / homes, you came to the right place. That's the whole point after all. Building something other people could only dream about 👍👍
It is beautiful. I love this series, but more and more I wonder what's the real point to these homes? As far as views, well you'd get better views if you just pitched a tent. To have something original? OK. To have something that sets you apart from others? Well then deal with your ego, don't spend 125K on a kitchen. A kitchen!!!
I agree to a certain extent. 2.5 million is an enormous amount of money. But I like how the owners had a vision, made it come true and pushed the boundaries of typical residential architecture. I’m sure a lot of people draw inspiration for their own future homes from this series, at least for those that are fortunate enough to afford it (which is not me btw)
Agreed, I've watched the series for years, but I feel it's list it's way over the last number of years. It used to show houses that were somewhat affordable, now it's just shows the higher end of the market

On Homes under the Hammer a dilapidated Victorian three storey property in London sells for £1,000,000.00, I would rather have the house in Eggs heck it Tor, but I can't afford either, but I am happy I have bought and paid for my slightly run down semi in Wales, if I get hold of some folding I will do it up and be a little happier!?!

The architecture doesn't fail to impress - as it's meant to. But in terms of livability there are major deficits. The house feels like a museum without any art in it. Instead there's an austere arrangement of subtly tacky "designer furniture" that doesn't want to be touched. How does one live in this place?

I ramble a lot and I see buildings in the middle of the countryside that really shouldn't be there which ruins the view. I've promised myself if I win the jackpot on Euromillions, I'll buy those properties, knock them down and let the countryside reclaim the plot of land they were built on.
What a storm of comments have arrived. As usual with YT, a mix of dumb, dumber and dumbest with a very few bright sparks. I will add my comments and the reader can classify them I don’t like the aesthetic of the building. So what? I’m not living there. I don’t see for the life of me why we should live in houses of a certain style. New designs have to be new. The Tudors (as an example) used the best materials and technology that they had; this house uses modern materials and technologies. I admire the planners for daring to be different. Otherwise, we would all be looking at timber framed, or Georgian or whatever houses. In my long experience, I’ve not met any planning officers who I think were corrupt. I do think that Councils are very wary of saying no to developers as the developers have more money to fight than do Councils. I do think that Councils are much, much tougher on individuals who do not have the resources to fight the Council. That’s almost meets the definition of bullying and cowardice - which I think is correct. I’ve met a few planners, including a Head of Planning, who lie (in writing), who are bullies and do not have the integrity to be in their position (current legal proceedings); I’ve met some who are just incompetent and shouldn’t be trusted even with a knife and fork; I’ve met some who are very good - balancing policies with common sense. I’ve had to deal with planning committees that are not fit for purpose. A chairman who mis directs his committee; committee members who haven’t read the documents before voting. All of this is obviously captured on video. I download a copy to be used, if necessary, in later proceedings. Very experienced planning barristers will tell you that the planning system is broken. Too many incoherent laws; too many incompetent people administering them. That all leads to chaos. Central government are (rightly) fed up with NIMBYs. So, they introduced planning laws about converting agricultural or office of shops to homes. It’s a great idea but the laws are woefully worded. Local planning authorities hate these laws because, truthfully, they take power away from people who think that only they know best.
And Planning was past for it ? can’t believe that … Who got the Back Hander ? NO WAY THAT SHOULD HAVE GOT PLANNING …. Not in keeping at all for the Country side
There’s conflict between the strong exterior and the quest for ‘homeliness’ of the interior. I think it’s a great loss of potential and I think it’s uncomfortable. Be either traditionally homely or strikingly avant-garde.
The figures are in British pounds, not US dollars. It is about 1.1 million USD. But the fact that the final cost was more than double what they expected says a lot too. Something did not go right in the planning stages of this project.
It did lack any cultural/personal content, that instantly stook out to me. What furnishings were there are very matchy matchy like an office or hotel. I'd expect someone with such a specific vision for a building would be equally exacting and thoughtful with how they furnish and embellish the interior. For sure it would be a perfect interior for filming a bleak sci-fi/Black Mirror episode. Maybe they had only just moved in when filming ceased so hadn't yet fully furnished and personalised the interior.
7:40 the narrator went of his trolley. Is this the first time he saw a stone kitchen slab? What alien world? Seems his antics confused the hosts and they didn't even answer what the wooden material is. Also would have been nice to see the fridge and more appliances, or maybe hear the rundown on why the cost is so high. Instead some drivel about future and aliens. When they went in the corridor, the camera wouldn't even turn left and right to check the windows and the view, instead focusing on led lights and some routers flashing, all to fit into this alien narrative. They could have done much better job filming this awesome house.
They probably have a cleaning service come in once or twice a week and want to be able to do all the laundry at the same time..its not that strange..we have 2 washing machinces in my house simply to save time
Its both isnt it? I mean they live there so its obviously a home. Id happily live in such a house/sculpture/museum..whatever you wanna call it, it looks amazing and probably the feeling of living in such a house is very special, you cant deny its a stunning architecture

The hanging lights are stunning. The chandelier above the dining room table looks like candles hanging upside down. Incredible!

It’s his home. He doesn’t need to justify it to anybody but himself.
Knowing the intricacies of the planning laws is his day job.

It makes good TV. I like seeing what is possible with a huge budget. I do like seeing the budget projects also.
The point is that they can afford 2.5 million easily, relatively at least.

I’ve met a few planners, including a Head of Planning, who lie (in writing), who are bullies and do not have the integrity to be in their position (current legal proceedings); I’ve met some who are just incompetent and shouldn’t be trusted even with a knife and fork; I’ve met some who are very good - balancing policies with common sense.
I’ve had to deal with planning committees that are not fit for purpose. A chairman who mis directs his committee; committee members who haven’t read the documents before voting. All of this is obviously captured on video. I download a copy to be used, if necessary, in later proceedings.
Very experienced planning barristers will tell you that the planning system is broken. Too many incoherent laws; too many incompetent people administering them. That all leads to chaos. Central government are (rightly) fed up with NIMBYs. So, they introduced planning laws about converting agricultural or office of shops to homes. It’s a great idea but the laws are woefully worded. Local planning authorities hate these laws because, truthfully, they take power away from people who think that only they know best.

There’s conflict between the strong exterior and the quest for ‘homeliness’ of the interior. I think it’s a great loss of potential and I think it’s uncomfortable. Be either traditionally homely or strikingly avant-garde.
They obviously don’t know how to budget. $835,000 just based on the drawing was low then there are always issues and upgrades.
I wonder if they factored in a kitchen for 125K!. The price of terraced house in Darlington!! ;-)
The figures are in British pounds, not US dollars. It is about 1.1 million USD. But the fact that the final cost was more than double what they expected says a lot too. Something did not go right in the planning stages of this project.
Looking at the design, I could have told them it was going over budget.

It did lack any cultural/personal content, that instantly stook out to me. What furnishings were there are very matchy matchy like an office or hotel. I'd expect someone with such a specific vision for a building would be equally exacting and thoughtful with how they furnish and embellish the interior. For sure it would be a perfect interior for filming a bleak sci-fi/Black Mirror episode. Maybe they had only just moved in when filming ceased so hadn't yet fully furnished and personalised the interior.
Too many of theseplaces are soulless and depressing.

I think thats why the house ended up costing 2.5 millin instead of 5 to 7, the construction with wood is probably much cheaper than concrete and steel

7:40 the narrator went of his trolley. Is this the first time he saw a stone kitchen slab? What alien world? Seems his antics confused the hosts and they didn't even answer what the wooden material is. Also would have been nice to see the fridge and more appliances, or maybe hear the rundown on why the cost is so high. Instead some drivel about future and aliens. When they went in the corridor, the camera wouldn't even turn left and right to check the windows and the view, instead focusing on led lights and some routers flashing, all to fit into this alien narrative. They could have done much better job filming this awesome house.
