I loved the anime, I really did. But I'd like a full scale "Sword Art Online" game with all 100 floors of castle Aincrad where you just get to play as your own person in the game where nothing from the anime happened meaning no main characters and no being trapped in the game storyline. Just getting to play the game and clear all 100 floors. I'd easily drop $100 on that game.

AshXXMayftw Not a game, but check out Sword Art Alternative - Gun Gale Online. The novels are written by the author of Kino's Journey. The manga is good too, although there aren't many chapters so far. The anime airs next month. It's basically what this game should've been, an original (and likeable) cast inside Gun Gale Online, with an original plot and no Kirito whatsoever.
Why not a .Hack// MMO already?

I was interested in getting the .Hack remasters, but I'm not sure how well the PC versions have been optimized.

Not going to lie, i bought this game 100% because it was the closest thing to a new freedom wars we are ever going to get.

That's because this is straight up Freedom Wars 2, except with a shitty SAO skin because Bamco offered them the money to finish the game if they rebuilt it around SAO. A real shame, too, since a lot of the weapon modification and upgrading systems in this game are a serious improvement over FW's heavily RNG-based bullshit.

The similarities between this and FW are pretty hard to ignore. I wouldn’t be surprised if the core game was FW2 at some point, and then reskinned to be a SAO game.

This got even worse when I got to the tail end of the video and he started talking about the jank, like getting locked in the room cause I swear that's what it felt like during missions in the panopticon. I'd start a room and 4-5 enemies would destroy me before I had a chance to hit cover, rinse and repeat til I ran out of revives (T^T)

Dude, I just finished watching the Sword Art Online anime and all I could think about was PSO. Sword Art Online has such an incredible concept, even if it's just so weird, a PSO style MMO based on 100 levels of raid bosses would be amazing. It'd just be neat to watch players band together to defeat floors to open up whole new areas.
That big hour-long tutorial-harem-introduction-sequence is the biggest drag on the entire game, such that the truckload of shooty-shooty-fun-time that followed once it was over honestly took me by surprise. I love Fatal Bullet to pieces.... aaaaaaaaaafter the first hour and a half of it, when you can finally hit the Remnant Wasteland. And Kiritoharem sort of vanishes into the background of supporting cast for the original characters Fatal Bullet introduces after that sequence for the majority of the game, which is good, because it gives Kureha, Itsuki, and your AI companion time to breath and establish themselves as just being BETTER WRITTEN CHARACTERS.
Tellingly, the EVEN WORSE harem girls that the game continuity itself introduces aren't even given the same introductory treatment as the main anime/light novel cast, as if the writers of Fatal Bullet are fully aware that they're not even worth as much as the characters Reki Kawahara wrote in his books and don't really want to touch them more than needed. Oh, all your favorite waifus are here... they're... sort of... around... BUT NEVER MIND THEM, LET'S HAVE ANOTHER SCENE WITH ITSUKI BEING SOCIALLY WEIRD.
It's so strange. I guess whether or not you're willing to enjoy Fatal Bullet will depend on whether you're willing to take the rough with the smooth. Of course, it helps that the developers sort of stealthily made this a gameplay-spiritual-sequel to Freedom Wars, a Vita game that was apparently really fun and which might have faded into undeserved obscurity due to the platform it was exclusively released on.

As someone who played Freedom Wars, I can attest that it was super fun. Though the late game ended up relying pretty heavily on crafting and trial and error with some of the spongiest enemies I've ever faced. Fatal bullet kinda does away with that and gives a more fair fight. One that will still beat you the hell down if you're not prepared for it, but this time around the grind to get prepared for the fights is fun.
Plus there's a much larger variety of boss fights, both in dungeons and in the overworld fields, partly due to the increase in number of environment layouts. Though I have to say, one thing Freedom Wars did better was its grappling hook mechanics, in which the grappling hook ended up being not only to reach higher areas, but also as a tactical advantage by being able to be customized as a shield, an offensive weapon, or a healing tether.
Gotta say I love how they treat the characters that are original to this game though.... sometimes. Sometimes cutscenes and scripted events end up going against what you're doing (like how in the aforementioned forced Kirito party mission, no matter how much you damage a boss, they'll stop the fight and call it impossible).
The game could definitely do with better AI, though that can be said for most games that have AI fighting on your side, unfortunately. Maybe better squad commands, maybe just better overall responsiveness.
That all being said, this game is a good spiritual successor to Freedom Wars. Not as good as we could have hoped for, but good nonetheless. Hopefully the devs patch the game (they already have been doing that so there is hope) to have not only better and more responsive AI, but also with more multiplayer modes (and a full BoB or Squad Jam mode).
Bonus point about the game: I'm super looking forward to the new anime that's gonna be set in GGO, and having Pitohui (one of the characters from that series) in the game along with the other 3, is really cool since we get to see their personalities on display and get to know at least a bit about them before the season drops this spring.

Freedom Wars was as good as they say.
SAO Fatal Bullet isn't the best spiritual successor but it's competent. Go check it out.

another former sinner here. i can confirm this game plays like an alternate version of freedom wars, except with a lame coat of paint via SAO. its a shame such a talented dev team was wasted on this instead of a proper FW2, instead we have a game thats not good enough to be well..... GOOD but its not bad enough to be awful, its stuck in the land of "decent"
I find this game addicting, while not perfect it’s still a lot of fun.The gunplay is good but it feels like that’s where most of the budget went to there, the customization and the upgrade system and not the story and some of the other parts of the game.

They did update the game with an assload of DLC content and additional online features which allows players to go through dungeons and fight harder bosses that you can't normally fight in the story

This game is like a game in anime, also I expected this to be a biased review but no you actually covered this game pretty fairly and correctly.
I always hate when a franchise doesn't think enough of it's world to give us a game in the world _without_ the need to follow an already established story. Some of the best Lord of the Rings games have basically nothing to do with the books and it makes me wish more franchises would try to make a game where you could explore it's world outside of a (usually not as good) retelling of an existing story.

Edit: Though I will say this game and the newest mobile game Integral Factor are steps in the right direction. Maybe Bandai would do better just to make a new IP 'Inspired' by SAO

I feel that the issue of why the characters continue to play VR games is only really valid if you aren't really considering the characters themselves. The characters were subjected to a traumatic experience, but they rose to the challenge and survived, having also formed important relationships, the next arc then turns the stakes personal in order to give Kirito a reason to dive back in, which works, and due to some quick thinking, and Kayaba's terrible passwords, he's able to overcome Sugo. He's then given the opportunity to decide the fate of Virtual Reality from this point on, having seen both the good and bad things that can come of it. Kirito's most important (and only) real friendships have come from his recent adventures in VR, so he decides that it's worth the risk it may pose, especially since the new hardware is incapable of harming anyone the way the Nervegear did.
This is what makes Gun Gale's threat work. There's the idea that even with the new hardware, the technology he helped reinvigorate is yet again causing people to die, and he would likely feel as though that fell squarely on his shoulders, this is a big part of the reason he takes this job, since he has to know if it's still possible for this technology to kill people, along with the fact that something like this would surely incite panic. Going through this plot forces him to confront the deaths he actually caused when he's reminded of Laughing Coffin, not to mention him slowly figuring out how these murders are happening is a nice mystery in and of itself. The villain even has great atmosphere, with imagery taken from some of Poe's stories.

My one issue with this game is it feels like a step back from Hollow Realization's freeroam and co-op modes. The ability to be your own character was nice and the game mechanics otherwise were pretty decent though. It was nice to have that split story of the Gungale Kirito mode and your own character story.
Warframe, Austin. The game you're looking for is Warframe.
It's basically if you made the gameplay of this better in every way, cut all the Kirito bullshit out of it, made the world even *more* interesting and PSO-like, and gave it the ability to properly play actual missions in a team as well as just hang out in personalized clan buildings/neutral zones, and oh yeah it's also free.

No I'd say warframe is pretty different. Personally I prefer sao over warframe but that's just me.
Warframe is the best ftp shit out there, cause it's free, every premium item can be earned in game, even the shittiest gun can be op with proper mods (and dedication), even with all the bullshit DW does sometimes (i'm looking at you, kubrow ai and OHMYGOD IS THAT A HAT AND BOW ON A MOA AHHHHHHHHHHHH)
Buuuut, it's only online, so you can't make a comparison with a sp/coop game made form a japanese ln/anime.

The gunfight reminds me a lot of S4 (Stylish eSper Shooting Sports), an online TPS game back in the old days (the NA server is still running though). Tons of actions, cool and useful abilities, aesthetic mobility, oh man it brings back the nostalgia
One thing i hate about fatel bullet is that enemy players will team with monsters to beat you.
Of course it's almost good. It's just Freedom Wars with less content and bad SAO characters/story interrupting you.

World or some parts of story aren't bad - Problems here are Kirito and his friends.
I don't hate the guy, but he is really bland and when they trying to show him as that amazing guy, that's just doesn't work. They give him more power than he even needed (Like this game was supposed to be about you but it's a story about how you joined his harem) and he take whole cast with him for some reason - We don't need every single character that ever was in the series - Just give us Klein and maybe one or two more characters that are acctual characters not just idols and give them something to do - We need characters who we can consider friend, not objects that we can jerk off to.
They need to stop thinking "How we can sqush even more fanservice here?" and start thinking "How we can make this game even better?".

I didn't mind SAO when it first came out but now I fucking hate it, not for the story but the characters. SAO: alternative was awesome for me because of the all-new characters and that is how fatal bullet should have been.
I especially hated being the main character and having kirito step in and take credit for something or just a "hey, I'm better than you in every way, so your going to do all the hard work and I'll just invite myself and my pals into your story of which you have no say and when you do have a say it's, yes and yes questions"

Hmm, now I'm interested in Freedom Wars.
Most of your complaints about the story only really work if you don't like sword art online or its characters, and since the game was designed with fans in mind, it doesn't really make any sense to put forth most of these points as flaws in the game. Most people who liked the series will be really excited to have an OC interact with characters from a show they like, every anime game with OCs knows this, and they lean into it heavily, which tends to work really well, just look at other examples of this like the Dragonball Xenoverse games.
Such a missed opportunity, I really wanted Coop GGO instead of another Singleplayer faux-Mmo. Great video!^^

That .Hack wallpaper made me happy to see, its great that other people know a series that never got as popular as SAO, but can be better than SAO. While .hack used the trapped in the game thing (even though it was literally not that long and didn't need to devote itself to it like SAO did (which is funny considering .hack came out before SAO)) I still like the series to this day.

The reasons why today’s Anime games don’t have English voices now because Bandai dropped out the R1 anime distribution industry years ago, which is where they pulled in most of their voices for the video games division. Today they only dub the games that are expected to pull in a large amount of profit like anything from the Tales franchise.

You just reminded me of The Bouncer. Your video made that game known to me and i emulated and beat it in one day in 2020. The game is actually very fun especially if you love Japanese PS2 game vibes specifically that Square Enix insanity and it’s decently replayable. It’s able to be beaten in about 3-4 hours check if out or at least Austin’s video on it
I also made a beat that was inspired by the game on my channel lmao. It’s called “The Bouncer” check it out
First it is an SAO game so you have to have Kirito and crew and a story that lets you interact with your favorite characters as if you are in the anime.
As for the actual anime and your questioning people playing the games with the new AmuSphere. But only 10,000 people got trapped in SAO and it got locked no one in or out. SO millions of people probably never even knew anyone that got stuck in SAO. To 99% of the worlds gaming community all they knew was they saw it on the news. To that end half of those people probably think it was just a publicity stunt and another percentage of gamers who did not even pay attention to the news. So when the new gear came out there would have been millions of people unaffected by the nervegear eager and excited to try this immersive game system out.
As for SAO FB I just started playing it a year after this video and how smart the AI is, is one of the things my friends and I are the most impressed with. My guys kill mobs without my help, use their skills to buff/debuff/heal/res all the time. You do have to buy the mod system from Argo so you can actually give your AI's real guns and accessories with stats but once you do they are very useful AI's.
My friends and me play WOW, Destiny, Division and we are super impressed with how they took a gun game and created real mmo classes. Actual healers, Support, CC, DPS and Tanks! We all talk about how we wish Division would take a look at SAO and fix their class system lol. I play a tank multiple taunt options and abilities to increase my sponginess while one of my buddies went healer with 4 different heal abilities. I would say the only downfall of this game is they should have made it an open world mmo if they had this game would be the most played game on any console system!

To this day, I am not quite certain why people play SAO games and request the SAO cast to be left out... The cast is what makes SAO into SAO. Take the cast out and it can be named into any other game. Asking Kirito to not be there in an SAO game is more than just a tiny bit oxymoron. Even the new spin-off anime, despite being a spin off, is specifically titled "**Sword Art Online Alternative:** Gun Gale Online". That's like buying an Uncharted game and then complaining there is too much Nathan Drake in it. If there wasn't any Nathan Drake in it, it may as well been called anything else. So After 5 years of SAO games, I honestly feel like "There is Kirito again" argument is wearing off way too thin..
People still hate the wasted potential of the universe. People love the world but hate that it is Kirito's world. They want to experience the world without kirito.

@@Shawnchapp It is the same reason why people love Dragon Ball Xenoverse 1&2. They don't like the constant reminder that Goku/Kirito is the main character and would love the focus to shift to them instead of the default. People enjoy a show in 2 different ways, the story and the world. In SAO the fandom has alot of people who enjoy the world more than the story, so when a game likes to remind you about the story instead of letting you enjoy the world, people don't like it. This is a game that promised to be *your* story, in *your* world. Instead, it glues you to the much reviled story instead of actually letting you have fun.

The games are all mediocre at best. The novels are mostly as bad as the anime up until the Alicization arc. But the Alicization arc is MUCH better than the rest of the series. It's actually a pretty good story and shows that Kawahara has grown as a writer. Good thing that it takes up half of the LN volumes overall. If the anime adaptation is a proper one, it will certainly bewilder the anime community and make them question what they thought was an absolute truth about the series.
Also, Progressive (the Aincrad arc reboot) is great. As the name implies it's much better than the original. Even Kawahara has mentioned that he's debated making it canon. If only an anime is eventually made so the original can be deleted from existence. I'm also really enjoying Alternative (the GGO spinoff) as well, more than the GGO arc itself. It's basically what this game should've been. An original likeable cast with an original plot set in GGO, with no Kirito and harem whatsoever.
