    I've seen them sitting on our feeder like that, in recovery. I never knew what was happening at the time. A couple years ago, while mowing my lawn, I almost ran over a hummingbug (as I call them) lying in my path. I thought it was dead and lifted it up to place it in the trash, but noticed it was still breathing. Horrified, I took it inside and tried to stimulate it by petting the chest area. It opened its eyes and looked around but did not move. So, I took it outside and tried to get it to perch on the feeder (same one as in the vid). It did not perch, but it did feed a little as I held it. Eventually, it perched, but I later found it lying in the garden below. As I left to get a box to place it in - I don't know why - it began to roll over and stand up. So, I watched for ever then it flew up to the feeder and carried on. Not his day to get mulched. Good ending.

    A year ago i had to make a life altering decision by giving my home up and moving into an assisted living facility.
    The first few months were very difficult for.me .
    I met a man in our dining room who was telling me about his humming birds he had a dozen every morning.
    So about six months ago i purchased a humming bird feeder i hadn't had had one in over thirty years.
    In about a week I had one in a few months I had five I live in Southern California and we had a great deal of rain so my hummies disappeared for a month or two due to our "super bloom " in the desert we had hundreds of beautiful wild flowers so they were feasting on the nectar from them .
    Now that the flowers have died out I again have my little darlings back I can sit out on my balcony and watch these enchanting ethereal creatures for hours they bring such serenity and peace to. me and make my day this was a very cute and informative post thank you

    Dear friend I am a fellow hummingbird lover. I see this happened in March so I'm sure you've cleaned your feeder since then. This happened on our feeder last year; it turns out there was a salmonella outbreak. I found precious little dead hummingbirds in my front yard. Scouring scouring cleaning cleaning the feeder and changing the water frequently helped reduce the exposure.

    • @terredee
      @terredee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Oh, k8eekat, I’m so sorry that happened. I had feeders for awhile, then saw a flock of native pigeons, one of whom was on the ground, her neck all swollen. Talked to Fish & Wildlife and found out it’s a lethal illness that is passed around the flock at feeders. Took them down that day. I miss all the birds who came, but they’re still around the house. Listen for birds and you’ll hear them.

    I'm currently sitting at my desk watching a mama-to-be hummindgbird on her nest. It's dark, and I usually don't see her first thing in the morning so I was curious when she falls asleep (goes into torpor). She is so sweet and I am so lucky to have been watching her build her nest each day and flying about. She made face to face contact with me a few times before building her nest, sussing me out, and decided I'm trustworthy.

Please, if you ever see a hummingbird like this, pick it up and place it's beak in the sugar water, eventually it will begin to drink and slowly regain strength. It will take several minutes before it is strong enough to fly. Also there are wildlife resources/rescuers available in most areas.

    If I had to move my upper limbs at 60miles per hour I'd sleep that heavy too.

    this doesn’t look normal at all... I’m no biologist but I’m certain that bird isn’t feeling so hot. especially because of how puffed up it is.

    • @mossmortis
      @mossmortis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Many hummingbirds sleep upside down during their Torpor state. When hummingbirds sleep their feathers make them look much buffed out than they normally are. Although yes, this one seemed a bit weak.

    I'm not sure what changed, "in nature", but I was 60 before I saw a single hummingbird. I see them fairly often now,....though not as much as I would like. People are planting flowers that attract them, and of course so many people have feeders for them, as well. In summer of 2017,....while I was out riding my motor scooter, an airborne mating couple of hummingbirds, crossed right in front of my face. They nearly hit me,....but were agile enough to flitter away. I felt it was a blessing & the sign of a good omen.

    This isn’t just any grip either. This type of grip happens no matter what during a hummingbirds sleep. It’s a locking mechanism they have to stay on branches while sleeping and it’s pretty neat.

    We had one hang upside down at the feeder several years ago. It died within the hour. 😭 Not a good sign.

    • @mossmortis
      @mossmortis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not always a bad thing. Many hummingbirds tend to sleep upside down because that's how they save more energy. If it died, it must've been something else, like a fungal infection, which is pretty common amongst hummingbirds.
