    I have to give you a BIG thankyou young man.
    My 6 year old Grandson has been staying with us the last few weeks through this covid thing, and I have been trying to get him excited about fishing with me for something other than the Bluegills in the pond.
    This morning while watching your video he sat up next to me, and the excited questions began.
    What kind of fish is that ? - Pike
    Are there some around us ? -yes
    Do you have that kind of pole ? yes
    When can we go ?-When it stops raining
    Granpa, the fish don't care if it's raining because they are already wet!
    Where's my fly rod !!!
    Thanks again

    My dad was gonna teach me to fly fish a few years ago, and got me a rod. He died before he got to do it. Now my best friend offered to teach me after my dad died, then he had a massive heart attack. He suffered some complications from surgery and lost the use of his arms. Now, here I am surfing TH-cam looking for videos that might help me figure this thing out, and I find your videos. Great stuff. It looks like a hell of a lot of fun, but I think I'll still to pan fish and trout before trying this. ;D Thanks for posting it.

      Peelindrag 12,35kg pike pb here, 9,3kg on fly 😉 Go get 'em 😁 I don't fish prespawn for pike anymore, that's searun brown season for me. And I don't bother weighing pike any more either, on the right gear any pike is fun. Have you tried pickerel on light gear? 🤔

    Great videos and it’s nice to see euro-anglers mention you! One suggestion would be to add some instruction - maybe help your subscribers by talking more about finding pike in rivers, reading rivers for pike/bass, fly selection process, etc- the best channels match instruction with action.

    Nice. I used to take chub on a fly, great fun. Doesn't have to be a game fish before you reach for a fly rod.

    The retrieve you use is the same as the retrieve I use for saltwater stripers in Massachusetts. It's sort of a walk the dog retrieve. This shallow water pike fishing looks like something that I'd love to do.

  • @darkwaters5217
    @darkwaters5217 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great fish man! It always takes a couple trips to blow the cobwebs out... you said it best, strip set. Something that we all want to be able to work on. Awesome video!

  • @dustinhinds1999
    @dustinhinds1999 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Typical early season results! We all are a little rusty in the spring, don't beat yourself up. When starting my musky year, each time I strip line in I repeat "strip-set, strip-set, strip-set" in my head as I retrieve the fly. I pound it in my mental bank until it becomes an instinctive reaction to the strike. It's nice that you have cooperative pike to work with. Musky strikes can be far and few between, not many opportunities to screw up and learn from.

    • @peelindrag113
      @peelindrag113  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to give that a try. Its frustrating knowing what and why I need to do it but just being in such a habit of pulling back 😂 definitely helps fishing for pike over musky!

    First of all...masterful hook removal on that second-last fish!!! But you know the reason why you are not pinning fish on the single hook---you are missing the strip set. It is a week before pike season opens here. I am stoked now. Thanks.

  • @drewnichols8942
    @drewnichols8942 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video, something you can try doing to get better hooksets from short strikes, is doing a "strip set" instead of using the rod to set the hook. When I guided in Colorado I would miss fish that would swing at a streamer by doing a normal hookset and ripping the streamer out of the water, when you strip set your not pulling the fly out of the water, that way they can keep chasing it.

I live near a really slow-moving river that carries a lot of sediment, but also is chock full of nice pike...i’d love to challenge myself to get them on a fly rod, but i dont want to potentially waste months of effort when i could be using the ol’ bucktail.

    🤙🤙🤙 Nice stuff man! Quick little tip, you’ll get a little more action if after you cast, you let the fly go with the current. Then on the drift, right as it enters the current to look like it’s floating on its own, is when you’ll get hit. Like at 3:46 and 3:55. Keep them lines tight dude!

    Hey man how do you like your 9' 8wt clearwater rod? I'm thinking of getting the clearwater combo. I would get the 8wt. Will mainly use it for smallmouth bass, but will also double up as a "black salmon" rod in the spring, searun brook trout, and possibly smaller river stripers. Do you think the 8wt is just way over kill for smallies? I know a lot of people recommend 6 or 7 wt, but I feel like the 8wt would be more versatile for me....

    • @peelindrag113
      @peelindrag113  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love all my clearwater rods, never used the reels though. An 8wt will work fine for larger smallmouth but may be a bit over kill for the smaller ones. But if your looking for one rod to do it all 8wt is definitely a good option.

    • @COB506
      @COB506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peelindrag113 I currently have a 4wt that I love for smaller waters (Brook trout and smaller bass are a ton of fun on it). I'm a fairly new fly fisher so I don't have a lot of experience with different rod weights. I'm also thinking a stiff action 6wt could be great, and down the road get like a 9wt for striper fishing. It's not something I plan to do often.. My 4wt simply lacks the power to fight bigger smallmouth and throwing bigger flies. My casting is not great also lol.

    • @flyfishjoren5283
      @flyfishjoren5283 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The key to fly fishing is matching your rod weight with your line weight. If you were to buy a 8-9 rod, you also need a 8-9 line, which if you want some backing, you need to store on your bigger 8 weight reel. Sometimes you can fish a 6 weight line on a 7 weight rod, but a 5 weight line on a 8-9 is a no go. Try watching some videos on line-rod matching, I will try to find some for you

    Some seasoned advice to help you land more pike, don't try to set the hook the way you would with trout or spin/baitcasting tackle. You need to do a hard strip set when you feel the weight of the fish on the end of the line. Don't raise your rod tip until you've successfully strip set the hook. It'll make all the difference.
    TL;DR don't set the hook with the rod, stoked with your stopping hand when you feel the fish's weight on the line.

    Nice video, dude! I see your grip has also worn out pretty fast XD I have two clearwaters that I use a lot and both grips are totally worn hahaha

      It's normally not too much of a problem, mostly just if it gets wet

    After watching your video couldn't wait to hit the river, then it rained for a straight day and we got between 3 and 4 inches. Rivers at flood level oh well.

    Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup th-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

    Why use a barb if you’re releasing? Might make it more challenging to be barbless. It’s better on the fish’s mouth too. Nice pike though.

      I do use barbless hooks in certain situations, but in this case I had enough trouble landing them as is 😅
