One thing the animation did that I think was important is how realistic the animation of the flashback was, more subtle but human movements instead of stylized supernatural ones. I feel like it's the animators saying "this isn't sad just because it's tragic, this is sad because it *actually happens*. We don't need to make up monsters to show you how bad things can get, normal people do that on their own."
I noticed that too, especially in the way her daughter danced! To add to that, the entire montage was essentially wordless, it reminds me of the way Pixar did the fifteen minute intro of UP.
the human animation in this episode was exceptional. I have seen no one mention it, but in the last flash back where the mom and daughter are back together and the mom is holding the daughter in her arms and the daughter shifts herself in the mom's arms to reach up to the night sky is incredible level of detail and they had absolutely no reason to add that very human and realistic shift of position in the mom's arms. That is love by the animators putting everything into the animation.

That shit to me was film award winning.
I think it's a common sentiment among most if not all parents. Everyone wants their children to have the happiest, best life possible, but reality doesn't always allow it.
I cried so much in this episode. Every single detail on it is perfect. The way she landed with her feet before we even know that she was a human that used to dance, the tired face we can barely see on the door knock before she got home, the small mole under the eye that is often hidden by her hair but she show's it to her daughter, the room moving in circles like a ballerina does. All the feelings are overflowing from the characters, even without a single word. This episode was a masterpiece, it hurt to see that there was nothing left to be done. No one could've stopped that from happening, but how to not blame ourselves when things go wrong? It's easy to feel empathetic towards that mother because we know how hard it is to raise a child alone. We know how much love she felt for her kid and how she gave up on everything, even her proud, to give her baby a chance to live. And it was all in vain. It really hurt, I won't lie. This episode was a tragic masterpiece.
I don't think it's the man she slept with that took her daughter away. It's not clear in the anime, but they were loansharks as far as I can tell. They came to collect money, and took the daughter as well as the money. Man, you get goofy stuff like accidental kissing, dunking a washtub on a girl's head, and suddenly, super sad story. Can't wait for the next episode.

Still, I'm glad the manga hints that thanks to Aira she was able to achieve peace, and just as she was dying, she was able to achieve peace right at the end.

The ballet sequence next seems more like she's dancing her way into afterlife / purgatory, but that ends with an abrupt sound of an object falling. Silky was likely in a big debt that is why she has multiple jobs and used some of the money she is supposed to give the loan sharks to buy her daughter the red dress. the loan sharks(might as well be yakuzas) took daughter as a collateral.
In Japan loan sharks are connected to organized crime a little like how labor unions are connected to mafias. So these are real gangsters roughing her up.

The manga has even more scenes like this but I was so happy when I seen this scene and knew that it was going to get animated. It really is a beautiful episode and they keep this theme very consistent throughout the story of the complexity of characters. Makes every person, alien, yokai in this show feel human and very believable even as monsters. The world in dandadan reflects this perfect in small and big ways. It truly makes the world feel like a mirror of our own just people in differing circumstances while still providing action as well as hard hitting themes and lessons . Definitely one of my new favorite anime PERIOD it surprised me with the quality and the multifaceted nature of almost every character shown on screen.
It took me a while to process this episode because it hit too close to home. That lady could have been me. I still remember the time I had to work three jobs to keep ourselves afloat after my husband abandoned us. I have a stable job now, and a debt thag I am confident I will be paying off in a year or two. And this episode just reminded me that I'm the lucky one. So many other moms out there go through this exact same thing. I almost did...
I was worried about the Acro Silky arc, but holy shit. Science Saru nailed it. I've got Goosebumps just like a had while reading it. it is getting better after each episode. What a great adaptation!! Here, Science Saru. Shut up and take my money!!!
@ my favorite backstory hands down, is vamola’s. Her backstory is my favorite. The evil eyes backstory is really good too. This season is only 12 episodes so i think evil eye will be next season.
@OnAirplaneMode yeah a lot of my favorite moment will definitely be happening in season 2 onwards. And YES Vamola has one of the most amazing stories that really ties the overarching plots together.
I already have this show in HIGH REGARDS as a fun, and hilarious and creative shounen anime with gorgeous animation..............................I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO CRY WATCHING THIS SHOW......and I cry like BABY watching this episode.....100 out of 10, now this is a contender with Frieren, Girls Band Cry and Dungeon Meshi as best anime of the goddamn year.
Despite the fact I knew there wasn’t going to be any form of happy ending for the mother or her daughter, it still shook me to my core when it abruptly cut to the mother beating so violently beaten in front of her daughter.
I haven't cried so much in forever this is by far the best episode I have ever seen in a anime. So many thoughts were going on in my head. And then I began thinking about my dad. And how much he has done for his family. And I never realized how much I truly loved my dad. My dad doesn't always stay home due to work and he goes to the hospital almost everyday. And seeing his health getting worse almost everyday. And knowing I can't do anything as I'm just a stupid dumb person. Every time he leaves all I can think about is him coming back home safely to us. As we never know if someone is ever going to return. I now probably understand the saying of life is precious. Knowing that I won't ever have my dad in my life ever again just hurts to much for me. Ok that's enough of that. I'm crying typing this out. I have already cried enough for one night Great anime amazing episode 10/10 masterpiece
Glad that this episode got the love it deserved and everyone reacting is also showering praises for it. Still to this day, this is one of the best chapters in the manga and the adaptation has been perfection so far! I really love it. This episode will very likely push the anime into a higher tier of popularity and of course, season 2 is gonna go fucking nuts.
I love how we're able to watch this series and interpret the episode in different ways. for me, when she leaped off of the building, I assumed that was her going into the afterlife because she died of her wounds from the glass cutting her. i assumed it was her essence of her soul, which was transferring, and the lights behind her were just the afterlife in itself. but apparently that wasn't the case which is fine. Ultimately, I received the same message as before. This is a mother who lost her daughter and lost her life, and it was tragic. Very heart breaking because this happens every day!😢
I have never and I mean never watched something so touching that when I realized that was the last episode till the next I was feeling so much emotion I was excited humbled and str8 up filled with dread this episode is amazing and the anime as whole is pretty good so far and the animation is perfect I had recently stopped watching anime due to timing and lack of interest but now that I got more free this was the first one I watched in 2 years and it was amazing this episode in particular made me feel so much things that I hadn’t experienced in a long minute made me honestly cry and I haven’t cried since my homies funeral about a year now this episode helped me so much with not only letting go of that death but also trying to better understand the dying love of your parent and what they would sacrifice themselves to help you survive it made me want to get closer with my people I highly recommend watching if you’re just here to listen this an amazing show I just hope it gets better from here🙏🏽
One thing I like about MoMos "battle damage" look, is that her pink sweatshirt is burned off around the collar and shoulders, which is where we see her psychic abilities come from when given visual. Like the power is literally burning away her clothes, but notice it barely touches the white shirt underneath. That's because her power is an aura of sorts. she sees them as hands to grab things, so her powers manifest around the chest and shoulders.
today has been weird. this episode made me cry for the first time since i was 6, i'm 20. then later on i had a seizure (first time) and still have crazy jamais vu from it. life hits you weirdly sometimes.

God just watching the review of the episode made me cry. I was not ready for this episode - I only have watched the anime. I am so ready for Pink hair girl joining the crew
Average Dandadan fan yesterday "aw ya, the quirky ghost show." Dandadan: "hold my beer I'm about to make this person my emotional heavy bag". Side boat: at 20:20 or so minutes in the episode, when Aira realizes she has a chance to be a real hero beyond her chunibyo behavior hits really hard too. People probably gonna miss that on first watch.
Yep! I did not understand the scene(dancing on top of the building and jumping of it to her death) too at first. But after reviewing it again and with manga reader's comments, and the other points to be considered(censorship of suicide scenes in Japan, cause you know, suicide rate in Japan is really high), her unsuccessful attempts to find her daughter, her being a ballerina dancer, she must have done that dance on top of the building during the last moments of her life as she decides to end it with a final dance while thinking of her happy moments with her daughter, also reflected on the whole spinning images of her memories of the happy moments she had with her daughter, as she keeps on spinning and dancing on top of the rooftop and then doing the final ballet jump from the roof down to the ground not depicted in the scene but artistically expressed by the animators by using the lights/twilight of the night sky as reference of at first horizontal movement of the lights and then vertical movement with her face and her hair blowing sideways as if falling sideways after a jump...and then the sickening thud. After that, she wakes up as a ghost wandering about and forgetting what it was she lost and the reason why she committed suicide. But then, when little girl Aira who somehow was able to see her as a ghost, mistook her for her recently deceased mom whom she was missing after the funeral(the pink haired lady in the coffin), ghost Silky remembered what she lost, and vowed to protect Aira as her long gone child hoping that she would someday call her "mom" and bring closure to her death.
Everyone keeps speculating on what happened to Silky's daughter, and you're simultaneously missing AND getting the point all at once. The point is that you don't know. Because the mother didn't know. Once the daughter was taken through that door, her screams are silenced, and that's the very last thing we see or hear of her. We as the audience are on the same page as the mother. Our thoughts are racing, scrambling, thinking of the worst case scenarios, desperately wanting to save her. Like yeah you can throw guess after guess out there as to what happened to her, but the point is that she was taken and is gone forever, and you have no way of knowing for sure what happened to her after that. Absolute pure horror.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that cried. Maybe it hit me hard because my Mom passed away a couple weeks ago. Ep 7 is certainly the best episode, thus far. It’s not often you see an anime that is MUCH better than the manga. It’s especially impressive because the manga is so damn good.
I don’t read the manga but this episode definitely caught me off guard, there was some sad moments in one of the previous episode but with all the comedy and fun in the show I didn’t expect it to have a tragic story like this. I guess I always knew it was her mother but man was that backstory so sad.
Silky’s daughter died shortly after… There is a panel showing them going to heaven, and in it the daughter was still a child. Unfortunately, the decision of buying the dress and cake was what costed her everything… Because she doubted herself and what she was doing was never enough, and wanted to do that one thing to prove herself she’s a good mother, make her the happiest and loved, not knowing that without those gifts her daughter was still the happiest and feeling loved… She was always rough on herself, and the way she gave that speech over how she wanted to make her daughter the happiest in the world, proves more how low her self esteem was and that what she was doing was not enough to her.. She couldn’t give herself grace Had she not bought those things, things could have been different.. The debt collectors are generally part of Yakuzas/Mafias, notoriously known for human trafficking and children are no exception, especially sexual one, it is safe to assume that the daughter was later sold and she died whether from abuse or rape or plain killing… That also abolishes the idea that Silky might be Momo’s mother..
That was the chapter I was looking forward to in anime I’m manga reader and when I read that chapter in the manga it gave me goosebumps and made my skin crawl🤯🥲
Not since we saw the couple's demise from Vinland Saga Season 02 have I been left so speechless and heartbroken. I tried to hold back the tears but then Aira hugged her and it left me teary eyed.
My first reaction to the flashbacks were "WAIT WHAT NO😢" and then when silkie was blaming herself i was like "no its not your fault..", "yes aira go comfort her
Something that I noticed that I feel like can be easily missed is actually the way the music changes as her story is told. Her memories are shown while melancholic music plays, but at the end, when she is stating her regrets, you can hear a distorted and simplified version of the same music. Most likely distorted because her memory of everything is not only skewed and imperfect, but the way she looks back at those times have been clouded by her guilt and regret. It's a more simple and quiet melody as well, as memories often fade and become less and less detailed as time goes on. I loved the way the music in that ending scene made it feel even more so like acrobatic silky was lost for so long, chasing down a forgotten memory that had been warped with time.
It's not the Alabasta of Dandadan, is the Arlong Park: Sad, tragic and moves you to tears. Shows you the worst of people. Greed and money is a theme. A mother dies while trying to protect her children, but at the end it's gets resolved in a reasuring and wholesome way. Also is very early into the series and if it doesn't hook for life to the story you better read or watch something else because nothing else will.
What really got to me is that she has no idea what happened to her daughter. I can't imagine a deeper sorrow. The story telling was so palpable 💔 It was beautiful to see Aira save her soul.
I believe Aira's actually helped her pass on properly, that's why her ashes went to the sky and light glowing down, her ghostly mission complete, I don't think she ever figured out Aira wasn't her daughter.
I'm no bias here... And I loved both anime and Kdrama or drama series... For me, dandandan is like a drama series that I watched with human actors... Nowadays kdrama is booming internationally.. the episode 7 of dandandan, it's reminds me so damn a lot how kdrama adapt from manhwa or webtoon 😊🎉 this is masterpiece, indeed!
You mentioned you hadn't cried this hard since the ending on AoT, I literally just finished watching the last episode of AoT and then decided to watch this episode of Dandadan. Too much crying tonight
Hey sea, I interpret the events of Silky's life quite differently. I doubt she was doing the "night work" solo. Usually the case is she would sign up to some shady organization in order for her to get her "business" up and running. She was likely indebted to some bad people - loan sharks, yakuza - whatever. But despite juggling jobs, she just couldnt pay enough and this organization took her daughter as payment unfortunately. I also think she bled out on the street right then and there - with her last moments being "seeing something precious" taken away from her - which is why in her initial ghost form - she's wearing exactly the clothes and has the same wounds she had that night she ran into the rain and collapsed.
The difference between Acrobatic silky arc and all other arcs from other animes you mentioned is that Silky arc is literally just 2 Fucking episodes, that's even less runtime than a short documentary type of film
The hardest I cried was from Made in Abyss but I haven't cried in a long time from watching anime and I was really shocked this episode took a complete turn and hit us with this.
This episode actually pointed out that the protagonist of the show is Momo Ayase, we see the flashback from her perspective and also the show started with her

I always took it as it was loan sharks who came and took her daughter , they were checking for money
In Japan loan sharks are connected to organized crime a little like how labor unions are connected to mafias. So these are real gangsters roughing her up.
@@dooshmasta i know thats why i don't think it was the kids father coming to get her like sea sugested in the video , its more likely they sold her off
@@Touma_S It could be that her pimp is the same organization as the loan sharks, they're the ones that have enslaved her into this life, and they took her daughter to traffic her as well.
I went to high school with a girl who grew up in Tokyo, and had been R worded several times by the time she was 13. This stuff is real. She was a single mom after high school, but from what I can tell on facebook, her daughter had a baby, and she (my old friend) is now married and they all live happily together in Suginami.
@@dooshmasta i never saw it as her having a pimp instead doing it herself to make the money and spending it on the dress instead but good point i didnt think of that .
Thats heartbreaking about your friend I'm glad she's happy now
They're going to get that money out of her just like they got it out of her mother the exact same way too
Being an artist that dancing scene is pure beauty and ao hard to pull off
It was ballet correct?
Proud of you❤
I both Cry in the Manga and Anime. Acrobat Silky wants a Simple and Happy Life for her Daughter. 😭💔
I was worried about the Acro Silky arc, but holy shit. Science Saru nailed it. I've got Goosebumps just like a had while reading it. it is getting better after each episode. What a great adaptation!!
Here, Science Saru. Shut up and take my money!!!
Just seeing how amazing this episode was adapted from the manga, I can’t wait for all of the other backstories.
Waiting for the evil eye back story to be animated.
Hol up the writing is this fire!?
Dawg I'm telling you
Just watch it and you'll understand
Everyone cried this episode it's unanimous
im the same bro. aira is my favorite character in the manga. i knew this was coming. somehow i cried even more the 2nd time. absolutely shattered
might be my favorite single episode in an anime of all time, this is showing how important a good director is
Yeah tbh this shit was peak
Despite the fact I knew there wasn’t going to be any form of happy ending for the mother or her daughter, it still shook me to my core when it abruptly cut to the mother beating so violently beaten in front of her daughter.
loved this video! it gave me a new perspective i didn’t even have when i first watched the episode
I have already cried enough for one night
Great anime amazing episode 10/10 masterpiece
Cherish that man and the time you have together. God bless.
Very heart breaking because this happens every day!😢
I have never and I mean never watched something so touching that when I realized that was the last episode till the next I was feeling so much emotion I was excited humbled and str8 up filled with dread this episode is amazing and the anime as whole is pretty good so far and the animation is perfect I had recently stopped watching anime due to timing and lack of interest but now that I got more free this was the first one I watched in 2 years and it was amazing this episode in particular made me feel so much things that I hadn’t experienced in a long minute made me honestly cry and I haven’t cried since my homies funeral about a year now this episode helped me so much with not only letting go of that death but also trying to better understand the dying love of your parent and what they would sacrifice themselves to help you survive it made me want to get closer with my people I highly recommend watching if you’re just here to listen this an amazing show I just hope it gets better from here🙏🏽
11:41 WORD UP!! We all could use some more compassion in this 🌎
Amen
They just took 2 episodes, at first they made us laugh and then cry like a toddler. Just awesome ❤
detail:aira actually could see the spirit when she Was a Little child.that ball just awakened her memories and ability.
That might also be tied to the belief that animals and young children can sense spirits.
When acrobatic silky first came and snatched her up the genuinely scared the crap outta me
0:10 fan letter I assume
i acctually cried a little watching it
Fun Fact: The flashback sequence is 7 minutes long, which is the amount of time the brain remains active after death
This Episode gives me chills and i cried watching it.
Amazing
The whole episode 7 was like a cinematic that plays after you beat the final boss, showcasing the tragic backstory
One thing I like about MoMos "battle damage" look, is that her pink sweatshirt is burned off around the collar and shoulders, which is where we see her psychic abilities come from when given visual. Like the power is literally burning away her clothes, but notice it barely touches the white shirt underneath. That's because her power is an aura of sorts. she sees them as hands to grab things, so her powers manifest around the chest and shoulders.
today has been weird. this episode made me cry for the first time since i was 6, i'm 20. then later on i had a seizure (first time) and still have crazy jamais vu from it. life hits you weirdly sometimes.
your analysis videos are amazing, keep up the good work
I sobbed 😭 loved and cried some more throughout episode 7 . A new mom here. This hit me crazy hard.
y'know I just realized that everyone but Okarun were all on the same page about the backstories and stuff
So Okarun is just there like "bruh why is everyone crying all of a sudden"
Haha😂Im just realizing that
i lowkey was gonna watch this before i watched the episode but it aint the same without hearing my glorious granny goat's voice so i gotta wait till i watch the episode
okay i watched it that was a fucking gut punch. ow.
6:25, correction on this part, those bags of human waste were debt collectors
Absolutely loved this man. You git a sub
Silky went from the viewer wanting to see her lose to wanting to see her saved.
Can’t wait for the rest of the anime adaption, have really enjoyed both the manga and anime so much 🔥
God just watching the review of the episode made me cry. I was not ready for this episode - I only have watched the anime. I am so ready for Pink hair girl joining the crew
I was just watching it while scrolling through my phone but this scene really pulled my attention, a very sad scene indeed
Almost 3k likes and well deserved!
Oh I totally forgot she was jumping off the building at the end, I figured it was symbolism for trying to get to the afterlife
This episode prove the potential of the anime definitely after this ep I don’t mind hearing masterpiece for this show
Average Dandadan fan yesterday "aw ya, the quirky ghost show." Dandadan: "hold my beer I'm about to make this person my emotional heavy bag".
Ahhhh, I get it now.
bro this episode caught me so off guard, wasn't expecting to get my heart ripped out. Was a ridiculously good episode
I guess I always knew it was her mother but man was that backstory so sad.
first time i almost shed a tear since the ending to assassination classroom
Silky’s daughter died shortly after…
There is a panel showing them going to heaven, and in it the daughter was still a child.
Unfortunately, the decision of buying the dress and cake was what costed her everything… Because she doubted herself and what she was doing was never enough, and wanted to do that one thing to prove herself she’s a good mother, make her the happiest and loved, not knowing that without those gifts her daughter was still the happiest and feeling loved…
She was always rough on herself, and the way she gave that speech over how she wanted to make her daughter the happiest in the world, proves more how low her self esteem was and that what she was doing was not enough to her.. She couldn’t give herself grace
Had she not bought those things, things could have been different..
The debt collectors are generally part of Yakuzas/Mafias, notoriously known for human trafficking and children are no exception, especially sexual one, it is safe to assume that the daughter was later sold and she died whether from abuse or rape or plain killing…
That also abolishes the idea that Silky might be Momo’s mother..
Everyone should read this in the manga too, they give more detail about it and its really beautiful.
That was the chapter I was looking forward to in anime I’m manga reader and when I read that chapter in the manga it gave me goosebumps and made my skin crawl🤯🥲
This episode hit me hard! I felt so bad for silky , I wished the silky found her real daughter.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who shed a tear.
This was the point in the manga that really hooked me 3 years ago. I'm so glad they did it justice
Not since we saw the couple's demise from Vinland Saga Season 02 have I been left so speechless and heartbroken. I tried to hold back the tears but then Aira hugged her and it left me teary eyed.
My first reaction to the flashbacks were "WAIT WHAT NO😢" and then when silkie was blaming herself i was like "no its not your fault..", "yes aira go comfort her
Bro this episode had me crying so hard 😅 the first frame you put up of the mom and daughter in a the vid I started crying again 😢
Reminds me of an old Korean movie called Princess Aurora. Tragic, just like this episode's backstory.
I very much agree this episode was 100% a masterpiece
I cried watching the sub and I cried watching the dub. I had to call my mom after this episode 😭
I can't wait to check it out! Love this show so far
Edit: Oh man... this episode was amazing.
Yeah
That's about as good a happy ending as you're gonna get sometimes in life, too. But I'll take it.
I don't even watch anime, but I saw this shows name online and sounded interesting. I'm glad I found out about it. This episode was 😭
Bro how tf you gonna make me feel about about the enemy that's crazy
Came to laugh, left with trauma and despair.
More sad backstories yet to come 🗿
The anime really made this scene far more emotional for me too, I am up to date on the manga but the episode hits like a truck.
I also think she bled out on the street right then and there - with her last moments being "seeing something precious" taken away from her - which is why in her initial ghost form - she's wearing exactly the clothes and has the same wounds she had that night she ran into the rain and collapsed.
nice bro, keep up the good work
Grave of the fireflies finally have a competitor.
I would honestly like to believe that her daughter survived somehow but the manga heavily implies that she didn't.
My silly self thought Aira was her daughter at first, before I processed it properly. Now I realized it was just taking it at surface value.
Made in Abyss changed me..
Also made me cry. Granted, i also cried every episode for like the first 8 episodes of windbreaker.
Probably the most beautiful and touching moment in anime EVER.
This episode actually pointed out that the protagonist of the show is Momo Ayase, we see the flashback from her perspective and also the show started with her
