Great news, I am looing forward to see those videos!!! And so happy I found tutorial like yours! I did that kind of drawing 30 years ago but forgot a lot ;) I fully agree, Dave Usher is indeed a great teacher and I am learning a lot watching the videos.

Having scoured the internet I have to say your videos are excellent. Thank you for taking the time and trouble.
Is there any way you could send me via e mail bjlmac@gmail.com, or post a picture, of the completed tree in "How to draw trees with graphite powder and pencils video. It looks so good that I want to try and zoom into the picture and see more clearly what you did.
Hi Bernard, unfortunately I no longer have that picture anymore, would it help you to pause the video at the point where I hold the picture close to the camera? just a suggestion...
I'm having fun & I'm so excited I clicked on your video! I'm very new to drawing & TH-cam videos have taught me everything I've learned. I've been practicing drawing trees....I LOVE YOUR TECHNIQUE of using the graphite AND the fact I can do it by scraping my pencils is not only ingenious it's really fun! Thank you for caring enough about us newbies that you took the time to make this & many more great videos! GOD BLESS!
I just used printer paper for this demo, printer paper is ok for rough sketches and practice, but I would recommend using proper drawing paper for finished drawings.
Another wonderful and helpful video. I'm glad you picked it up and held it closer to the camera at the end, I saw many details I could not see earlier in the video.
Terrific video.....Just a tip that may help some people...I use my blue tack to clean my erasure pencils (both regular and retractable)...just poke the tip into the blue tack..give it a spin and it comes out clean....Thanks for this video Smoothie.

Try carbon pencils. Question for smoothie: on one of your video's you said that mixing clay into pencils makes them darker..... is there such thing as a 100% clay pencil or a clayless pencil?
Mixing clay with graphite makes the graphite lighter and harder, I have got some carbon pencils, they are ok but I like graphite better. don't know about a 100% clayless pencil? doubt it. it would break too easily
Amazing! You were recommended by a watercolor artist I follow named Dave Usher and I am so glad he did. How does one sharpen a wood less pencil please? I'm. really enjoying your video tuition on pencil and wash and also wonder if they are in special order? Thank you. Juliette
+Juliette Fitchew Hi Juliette, I use a standard pencil sharpener for wood-less pencils, its also possible to use sandpaper or even a craft knife. forgive me I didn't understand the question regarding "if they are in special order" did you mead the videos run in order of beginners to advanced, if so, no I just put videos up as I make them. thanks for commenting.
I really like the look of the graphite powder. Ive been trying to do some landscapes in graphite powder but for some odd reason i doesnt look right when i do it i have the derwent pencil eraser and it doesnt seem to pick up the graphite not sure if its the vrand of paper i use or the brand of graphite.
Could be a number of things Kyle, most common one being the eraser tip is coated with too much graphite, its best to give it wipe every few seconds to keep it clean when your using it, and yes the paper and graphite will make a difference, what are you using ?
For paper i have three Strathmore Bristol smooth and vellum 100lb. 270g/m2,Strathmore drawing 70lb 114g/m2, Canson 50lb,74g. Strathmore 64lb,104g/m. For graphite i have generals graphite sticks. Daler rowney woodless graphite pencils 2b 4b and 8b. And for pencils i use generals,Daler rowney, and Royal Langnickel
Shouldn't be a problem with the paper your using, I haven't used Generals or Daler Rowney woodless pencls before so I don't know if they have a high carbon content or not? which as you may know...carbon in pencils doesn't erase well, I use Koh-i-noor, haven't had any problems with them.
I'll try that out. There's one art store in my city and they mostly sell generals and Daler Rowney. I like the daler Rowney more then generals mostly because generals feels brittle and the tips break really easy. Generals has a better charcoal pencil then graphite.
Smoothie, do you have to sharpen the graphite sticks in a sharpener to get the lacquer off, or do you scrape it off along with the graphite when you apply it to the paper? I wouldn't think you'd want lacquer in the mix, right?
I try to avoid scraping any lacquer on to the paper if possible, it does happen occasionally, doesn't cause too much of a problem, but normally I will sharpen the graphite stick back to expose more graphite if its getting short and closer to the lacquer, I do this by either using a regular pencil sharpener or just scraping some lacquer of with the craft knife.
I'm sure its possible, sharpen the wood of the pencil back as much as you can and scrape the lead with a knife to make powder, it will take a while but should work.
thank you for the helpful videos.. your skill level is astounding! I would so very much love to see a real time lesson on drawing a near field tree ie foreground, close up tree. Is this doable? Thanks again. Yaqin
Hi Abby, sorry for the late reply, I just noticed your comment, Yes its certainly doable, I'm always drawing trees, in fact the drawing demo I'm working on right now has trees reasonably close in the foreground, hopefully it will be uploaded this week:)
For this simple demo I used printer paper, here's a link to my other video show the paper I use for most drawings, th-cam.com/video/Y7r7IPIGOeQ/w-d-xo.html
hi there smoothie great video very inspiring. do you use the graphite pencils for drawing or just scraping them to get the dust off them? what grade pencil did you use to get the dust on this drawing? thanks iain

You may want to kick up the volume in your videos cause it's sometimes hard to hear, especially if you're listening to your video and it's raining outside.
Am I the only one who simply cannot hear the near-whisper of this narration (and some others of smoothie77's)? Even the low susurrus of the air conditioner when it kicks on provides enough low-level background noise to make the narration inaudible for understanding. It's not my machine-I have a Dell 17 7779 with MaxxAudio Pro, and it *cranks* on anything else, including other TH-cam videos (even some of smoothie77's), but some of them, like this one, might as well be muted. I love your instructional videos, and your techniques, but please, please review your audio levels before you publish. Any good video editor should allow you to boost your audio levels in post-production. Thank You! ;-)
This video was made in 2015, i did have an audio issue back then, although most people say the volume is fine,it does seem to be very low for some people too, I'm sure you wont have this problem with the newer videos as i have had new recording equipment for the last year.

what kind of paper you use, thanks
For this simple demo I used printer paper, here's a link to my other video show the paper I use for most drawings, th-cam.com/video/Y7r7IPIGOeQ/w-d-xo.html
thank you. it's very helpful and clear :)
Thank you Cara, much appreciated:)

Hi Ian, I use the woodless graphite pencils for both drawing and scraping, the grade I used here was an HB.
Очень полезный урок.. Большое спасибо.
You're welcome, thank you👍

Hello, just became a member of your Patreon Channel. Can you tell me please why I can't see it from my phone? If anyone else out there knows that would be greatly appreciated as well. Ty
And Great Job!, really like your style. Both drawing and personality!
Hi, the patreon app has always been very glitchy, its best if you view the videos on a pc, or use google to access patreon, it seems more stable.
@@smoothie77drawingpainting Ty, I will continue to work on it. I do have a question concerning this particular video...., " how do you know exactly where to make darker spots? People are going to think this may be a little crazy but it almost looks like a piece of broccoli. A beautiful piece of broccoli for sure. Without a reference do you think a piece of broccoli would work? Shining a light source from one side and just draw what you see, chunk by chunk. I don't eat it much but I'd start buying if you thought it would help??? Ty
@@CCC0122 Hi, unfortunately i don't answer patreon questions on youtube for obvious reasons of privacy, could I please ask you to ask all questions over on the patreon site, many thanks.
Well that was a unique experience, at least it looks like a tree lol onto the next video drawing trees for pencil and wash !
Love the Midlands accent btw. Melton Mowbray?
LOL, is my accent that obvious? not Melton, I'm in south Leicestershire:)
I have my volume up as far as it will go. Please adjust your mic. Thanks.
Очень познавательный видео урок!!! Жду продолжения очень интересует детализация в рисунке Спасибо.!!!!
👍
Good fun!
You may want to kick up the volume in your videos cause it's sometimes hard to hear, especially if you're listening to your video and it's raining outside.
great videos, thank you for sharing. Just a bit dark... throw in more light and keep going ;)
Thanks,and you're welcome, I appreciate the comment.
Please speak loud I can't hear you properly
👍😘
Just a recommendation, you might get closer to your microphone. I can't hear you at all.
I am sorry, but the volume is too low. I cannot hear the instructions. I would like to subscribe. Thank You:)
Very good vídeos, But the volume of the voice is Just Too low
Raise the volume, I like his voice
I really like your videos but you need to turn up the volume . I cant hear what your saying
another question for you: i need some references like yours, where can i find these?
i love your drawings!!
very informative, thanks, but it is very hard to hear you?
someone send this man a microphone so we can better hear those creamy monotones
Good technique just wish you would speak little louder
Well you need to improve sound quality. Sound like one that is hunting game.
This is an old video Jerry, I didn't have any decent recording equipment back then, check my newer videos, the quality is a lot better...
For some reason, I cab barely hear you. Other videos are finei
your audio volume is very low.
Looks like a half eaten apple on a stick . . . *blinks* looks like actual tree in real life. Dafuq!
