I've been up since 400am to watch your videos ...I quite enjoy learning all the tips and techniques your showing us... this is helping me more forward in tone and shading values which I struggle with....I see how important it is to use different pencils to achieve the tonal values but I'm building up my supplies slowly as I need time to save for supplies....since I have hand issues I cant use a knife for the scraping of k noor graphite pencil have you ever tried using sandpaper to scrape off the graphite on to paper to use? I know they have powder graphite but I'd prefer to buy a pencil like you use as I had a glitter accident🤦♀️ with my daughter yrs back that went every where and weeks till we all stop having glitter attached to us somewhere....lol thanks for any reply..many art blessing to you today....mikelle art mom✍👩🎨
I love your videos and I learn so much from you. I like your artistic adaption of the picture, yours is beautiful. Thank you for your taking the time to teach us. You are a favorite and so expiring.
I had the same thought Izak, unfortunately I drew this one on cartridge paper so I might ruin it if i try, thanks for the comment, always appreciated:)
This is one of my favorites. Reminds me of where our family cottage area when I was a child. Love Love Love your work and teachings. I am starting to do this type of pencil work now and I love it. Thank you for your help. I am 70 this year and still learning. Thanks again.
Não tem como descrever uma perfeição dessas. É simplesmente fantástico. Vôo na imaginação quando desenho tbm. Sou fã. Deus abençoe o Sr professor show 🙏
You have great videos and tutorials. I love the work you produce. These are helping me out quite a bit. I just recently picked up charcoal/graphite sketching after not drawing for 30 years. I find it relaxing. I have a lot to work on and videos like this help develop technique. You are the British Bob Ross. Keep it up!
Another great drawing with great artistic techniques. I learn more and more techniques with every video you do. Thanks so much for taking your time to do these, they help me and others a lot. Great art.
I thought you can't be any better because you are already perfect. You are just the master of the pencil. I was wrong, you are better and better every time I see a new video. How can it be? Excellent tutorial Smoothie. Thanks a lot. I guess I know what to do on weekend. Greetings
Haha, I'm certainly not perfect or a master, but I do really appreciate your kind words, I hope you have a go at this one, I wish you all the best! have a great weekend Jerzy:)
I am very grateful for your response to my comment. I want to ask you to ask if you can teach us the Mona Lisa painting if possible, I am thankful for you
I am a painter and I tried to paint the Mona Lisa I drew but I encountered some difficulties and I looked for someone who has the ability to correct the mistakes that I faced but you were shown I drew your attention and it was frank and I thank you because you are a good person and loved
Thank you again for your kind words, there are lot of really good portrait artist on youtube that maybe able to help you with the difficulties you have with drawing the Mona Lisa, have a look at Darrel tank's channel , he's brilliant with portraits.
Definitely! don't know if you know or not, I have started to post the reference photos on my Patreon page for patrons to use for their own drawings, this ones on there:)
I just subscribed to your channel and I look forward to recharging my drawing techniques while I watch and absorb some of your thoughts on how to approach certain ways to draw, shade, and blend.
Awesome! Thanks for that. I was waiting for mist! And yes, it's good to use your creative license. It allows for your own vision to shine through your work and for beginners like myself, it helps to discover and develop your own unique style. There are people who can draw photo-realistically and although I think they're amazingly talented, I don't see the point in that either. I tend to admire artists whose unique style makes their work recognisable ;)
Hi Iona, thanks for the great comment, I totally agree with what you said, I couldn't of said it better, I really admire photo realists too, its so incredible what they do, but I like to play around with the scene, adjust things, leave out the clutter, and enhance the areas I like to make them a better focal point etc.....I love artistic licence:)
Awesome ... always saying you are awesome . Been. Patron in your channel and cancelled my subscription and I don't know why I did that 🤫🤫will subscribe again for sure as I never seen any one better than you working with graphite in tje whole world
l love watching your videos. the horse and the little girl omg brilliant. l have also sent your Co drawer in regards to her beautiful as well. l love water falls and mountains so between the two of you l hopefully do something worth while. Thank you for videos and your amazing gift and time. Happy Easter from Canada.
I am sure you deserve more subscribers, but I do not know if you could answer all the comments as you do now. You are a great artist and kind with the people and I like it too :)
I totally agree I deserve lots more subscribers :D just kidding haha, I always try to answer every comment, even if I get more subs and comments I will still try to answer all of them, I appreciate your kind and thoughtful comment Rafa, thank you:)
Absolutely mesmerising, I just love what you do and I learn so much. Trying to become a patron for you but it always fails at the checkout I will keep at it however you are so worth it and I hope you achieve your goal so that we can all benefit from your talent x
So beautiful!! Thanks for inviting us into your world... I have found the Color Previewers you suggested very helpful for watercolor. Do you know if there is anything like it for graphite? I'm afraid of the dark 😳
Oh!! Just came home from work so a bit late but ..... This is awesome!!! And... I am a Bob Ross fan too :D also love to move mountains... ;) Well done Smoothie, you keep amazing me ^.^
At last I feel my drawing skills have improved sufficiently to do this one, I mean drawing the outline as a start. Thinking of the thirds rule I think I can manage the spacing so that it looks right in proportion lol this is for the near future perhaps when I've finished the haywain I can test out the new paper lol
smoothie77 lol I have loved the haywain , it has been great to be so challenged, the issue of escaping graphite hasn't diminished my joy at doing it. Thomas came in today and I actually asked him if there could be some sort of electro magnetic field which was taking the graphite from my paper, he said no mum it's more likely that it's the paper you are using that's doing it. This has had it's funny moments I hope I haven't stressed you out in the process
Hi Smoothie77 ... have followed your vids for sometime... and decided to subscribe... to get ask a question... if you are mounting your graphite drawing in a glass frame... do you recommend mat board layers (at least two levels) and would you spray clear acrylic (non-shine type) on your drawing to prevent smudging ?? You may have mentioned this some else but I did not search for it. Thanks. Sam
Hi Charles, thanks for subscribing, I would always recommend using a mat when framing a graphite drawing, its best if the glass doesn't press on the drawing, Its not really necessary to spray the drawing if its protected in a frame.
Hi Larry, all reference photos from my youtube demos are all now being uploaded to my Patreon page for patreons only, it would be a conflict of interests if I were to post them on G+, sorry about that, For just $1 per month you can get all the photos and patreon content over on my Patreon page.
As a beginner, I am looking at some recent photographs of winter forest scenes and am wondering how to show the snow in a densely wooded scene. Much underbrush and lots of snow. Is there a site or video you can recommend?
Hi Smoothie, lovely as always. I've never tried the Stedlier brand. I usually use Derwent. I made a purchase after Christmas, Creatacolr went on sale at a great price so I bought a set. I don't really like them. So... how does the Stedlier compare to the Derwent?
Hi Monica, the Staedtler lumograph black are mixed with carbon, so they are very dark and I couldn't compare then to the Derwents as they aren't regular graphite, although the regular Staedtler lumograph are all graphite and compare well to the Derwents, they are very similar, Staedtler make really good tried and trusted pencils, I even find the cheaper Steadtler Noris and Tradition to be excellent too, but the lumograph range are the professional pencils, definitely worth investing in a set.

Thank you, its my pleasure, I have used the grey color previewer to assess tones in graphite, it works well, don't be afraid of the dark:)
great job
Thanks Daniel, kind of you to say.
smoothie77 inspired me to create something
Love your work, it's amazing. Is your dust brush made of goat hair? Or can you recommend a similar brush.
Thanks pearl, any soft brush will work , even a soft nylon brush will be ok, just use less pressure if the brush is not quite so soft.
Thank you so much for replying so fast. I was a big bob Ross fan also 👍☺
No problem:) yes, I used to watch Bob Ross for hours, great artist!

Smoothie what size is the tombow eraser pen please?
Hi, its the 2.3mm eraser.
Thanks Smoothie
I have just become a member, how can I find the reference photo?
Hi Anna, unfortunately this drawing was done before I started posted lessons on Patreon, but to navigate patreon easily the first video on your home called " how to navigate patreon" will help you to find other projects you maybe interested in, if you need anymore help pleased message me on patreon and I'll be more than happy to help you.
Another wonderful drawing! I noticed in this drawing you are using a board to draw on; at other times I see you leave your paper in a sketchbook; are you working with different surfaces under your drawings? Is this intentional, or is it simply that the paper was sent to you unbound? Thanks again for sharing your amazing talent
Thanks Christopher, yes, I'm working with different types of paper, if I use a loose sheet I fix it to a board, if the sheet is in a sketchbook I generally leave it in there, in fact the board that I use in this demo was the cardboard backing from an empty A4 sketchbook.
Did you use any charcoal pencils on this? Excellent btw.
No charcoal
smoothie77 thank you!
Hi smoothie I don't seem to be able to join you r patreon channels.
Hi Cathy, can you tell what problems your having so I can help you...
Hi smoothie another fine video! I notice your collection of tools is literally identical to mine! :D Do you use fine sandpaper as well to make your graphite powder?
One question I've never asked you regards to your videos....how do you set your camera up so nicely for a great shoot?
I have got a sanding block but never use it for graphite powder, the camera set up is simply a tripod standing on the table with the center pole turned upside down, with the camera pointing down.
smoothie77 Cheers my friend! I appreciate your advice👌 Do you have your own site for all these wonderful drawings? 😀
You're welcome, not got a website as yet, but its something I intend to do soon, I'm working on a lot of things at the moment, its a case of finding time to fit them all in :)
smoothie77 Excellent!😊👌

Hi smoothie. How do I know if I have subscribed .
Did you click the subscribe button under the video, make sure you click that and it will say "subscribed" as opposed to "subscribe"
Thanks for your real time demo drawing that I can learn a lot. However it would be more ideal if you can either speak louder or enhance your recording volumn so that your voice can be heard easier. Look forward to viewing more of your pencil drawing videos.
I can't believe 15 individuals disliked this. I wish i could draw this 'badly'.
I lose my drawing skills😔 i need help
