I get chills too … but not for the same reason. One of the biggest disappointments the Bruins had in my childhood/teenage years. In fact it might be THE BIGGEST. It was one thing to lose to Edmonton and Pittsburgh twice each. Those teams won championships. And they were legendary. Edmonton won 5 in 7 years (probably should have been 6 in 7), and Pittsburgh went back to back. Buffalo lost the next round. Not only did they lose the next round, they lost three OT games, JUST LIKE how the Bruins lost THIS series.

@@FAITHandLOGIC I'd have to disagree with Sabres not being good. They were pretty high scoring that season. Mogilny had a team record 76 goals and LaFontaine was the league leader in points until Lemieux came roaring back after Hodgkins. In goal was aging star Grant Fuhr and up and coming Hasek, who was on the eve of becoming the Dominator. It was a magical season. Make no mistake, this was still an upset.

I was sitting in the first row right behind the Boston bench for that magic. I still remember looking up to the box and seeing Rick going absolutely berserk. I had no idea that he too was calling his greatest goal ever until after the game when we poured onto the streets of Buffalo and the cars were blaring Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! out of their windows while replaying Rick's brilliance. Shortly after that utter elation the Sabres management made their worst decision in franchise history. The Dominator came in for Fuhr as he was injured in the first period of that game. I knew of his heroics in the Czech Republic and I was extremely excited when he replaced Fuhr. Hasek was still a backup at that point to Fuhr as he wasn't widely known yet. Because of the lengthy layoff from the Boston sweep Fuhr recovered and was put back in net to play Montreal for the next round. I was livid that they didn't stick with Hasek and Fuhr was his normal garbage against Roy. We outshot Montreal dramatically in every game but were swept by scores of 4-3 in all four games and three of those were in overtime. Had I been calling the shots Hasek would have started and history would have been rewritten. He would have been the Conn Smythe Trophy winner instead of Roy and Buffalo would have undoubtedly won their first Stanley Cup. Under no circumstances would the Dominator have allowed four goals in any of those games against the Canadiens. A real bittersweet shame.

As a Bruins fan, this will always be gut-wrenching. That team was LOADED that season. 51 wins, second overall, and absolutely owned Montreal the last eight weeks of the season. Not to mention three wins over the Sabres late in the season. Further, of THOSE. three wins, two of them were shutouts IN BUFFALO. The last five weeks of the season, almost literally only Pittsburgh beat the Bruins. And those two faves weren’t dominating wins by the Penguins. That series should have been the reverse of what it was. And the Bruins would have won the whole thing that year had they gotten past this round. No way was Montreal going to beat the Bruins in the second round. And once Pittsburgh lost … it would have been there for the taking thereafter. So maddening that the Bruins lost the way they did. The way the series went they DID deserve to lose it, but that doesn’t make it any less puke-inducing.

Isn't one of the things that makes this so incredible is that May was an enforcer and not a goal scorer? Then he goes out and scores an OT goal as if he were Guy Lafleur or Denis Savard.
