The mistake everyone makes about this show is they think it's an epic adventure show about these heroic gems, but that comes second. The major focus of the show is about Steven growing up. VERY few episodes of Steven Universe are filler. Everything comes back around in later episodes. Buck taking guitar lessons from Greg will come back in a future episode. If you paid attention to Marty you may figure something out before it's revealed. Hell if you go back and watch the Uncle Grandpa episode after you finish the series you realize it foreshadowed some things.

I'm actually mildly infuriated by the episode order. It's not that big of a deal, but season 1 ending on The Return and Jailbreak really set the tone for the later season finales. Also, Story for Steven was a season 1 episode, which I felt gave the flashback episodes in SU this "chiller, but still important" vibe that suits a once per season format, but at this rate the next onecomes so very close to it. It was still a great reaction, just the order irks me as it messes up the flow of the story. Idk does anyone else feel like that?
Nah it's not just you, it's just like... it's always been like that. Even during the initial run, CN was messing around with episode order and botching pacing and reveals, so I think we're all just numb to it. It all mostly comes out in the wash, and trying to figure out and then correctly proper viewing order is shockingly difficult. Watching it out of order is just kinda part of the experience at this point, unfortunately.
Also yeah the start of season 2 & 4 tend to be abit slower, kinda like how season 1 is. I will say season 3 & 5 start intense, so just to let you know without spoilers

So, not sure iirc, but at least from what I remember feeling the first time I watched the episode: I think Buck shed the tear cause, he had actually drawn the picture when he was younger for the Mayor, but "being an adult, with no time for kid stuff." (As I could see him saying.) He essentially dismissed the drawing, which is why Buck is kinda deadpan, and tries to make stuff cool/dryly-sarcastic. So, at the end, when he saw that his friends liked it. It kinda showed him that, even if his Dad didn't support him, there were still others that would.

Actually a correction, say uncle is season 1, season 2 was actually the EP after jailbreak, and say uncle and the flashback episode and the t-shirt episode are season one.
I've always felt it was weird that "Say Uncle" was the third episode of the season, like, the plot was kinda put aside randomly for this crossover and a don't understand the reason
