I forget the episode, but there was a flashback of sorts that showed Pearl always jumping in front of any attack that might even threaten to poof Rose Quartz. Until the Pink Reveal it was presumed that Pearl was just that devoted to Rose, but it was not just that. She had to be certain that Rose was never poofed as it would reveal her as a diamond.
I believe this is when she was training Connie with the song " do it for her "

Fun thing with Pearl in Single Pale Rose - in nature, pearls form in layers, so the idea of going from strata to strata was very much thematic of that particular type of stone/mineral.

Literally, that moment where Ame tells Steven that she’s not going to dump another thousand year old conflict on him is probably in my top five moments of the show. It really shows just how far Ame has come since the start of the series and it’s nice for someone to take Steven’s mental health into consideration for once.
Plus their sibling relationship is just the best.

Especially since that "thousand year old conflict" was a complete waste of time. Since they didn't need to fight Homeworld at all, cause he could've been worshipped like a god, and he could've commanded them to stop since he's a diamond. After this, why listen to ANYTHING Pearl says again! Since EVERYTHING she's told him about his mother has been a lie!

I can’t believe I JUST now realized this, but the reason Pearl never shapeshifts until SUF, is because the last time she did, everything changed permanently, for worse or for better
It just shows how deeply her trauma from the event was
She put some of that behind her in order to play with Steven
Also, in the episode, the Secert team, when Amethyst told Pearl to shapshift she said she couldn't concentrate
I think by “killing” pink Diamond it was a bigger loss for the other diamonds because it takes away from the facade of their perfection. It wouldn’t work if she fought then as pink Diamond because as the youngest and smallest sister she already had way less power. Only her gems are loyal to her and she only has one colony while the other diamonds have many. It’s like if Hawaii tried to go to war with the rest of the USA. She has power but her power only meant anything to a minority of gems while the other 3/4 diamonds were experienced and revered rulers that always held her back and budget her to the side. If you think of her as a brat she was only like that because she wasn’t seen as equal to the other diamonds and she was fed up with it. All the weird things to keep Pink entertained like the human zoo we’re just distractions her sisters pushed on her so that they didn’t have to give her any real power like a colony with authority. This was all commented after “A single pale rose” because that’s the big twist episode and I couldn’t eat to respond though everything was answered in the following episode.

@@easyk4187 Besides, it was kinda obvious since Rose quartzes were made to e solders not gods, only diamonds are considered gods and Steven has been playing god since the beginning, he created an army of melon hims that made a society on an island which he can use astral projection to put himself in the body of one of them, he can heal anything gem or organic, and he can bring people back from the dead, if that doesn't qualify as god powers I don't know what is! Also why do you think he only saw memories that were related to Pink and not Rose.
I really like a single pale Rose it shows how she was actually pink diamond in her true intentions and I find that as a great twist for the show❤️💖💕

@@Error_-ct2vp I wouldn't say it's lazy. Cheap yes, but definitely not lazy. Rebecca Sugar always planned for Rose to be Pink meaning she would have been going backwards when figuring out the overarching plot. She would have known that Pink Diamond was Rose from the beginning and would have been trying to create mystery from the beginning of the show.
From this perspective it's easy to see that she didn't think about it from the point of view a lot of the audience viewed it, thus she wouldn't foresee that the audience would dislike Rose and the decision itself so much. She failed to understand that since the audience didn't know there would be a different viewpoint towards the character of Rose and the Diamonds in general.

Interesting that the fact that Pearl was somehow related to Pink Diamond has been shown shown at the episode where she was trying to fly to space. You can see a little Pink Diamond emblem on hers chest. Plus previously this season at one moment Pearl was struggling to tell something she could not for some reason, that was a hint to something, but to what? And here us the answer. Pretty crazy isn't it? I cannot belive that we are so close to the final of this season and SU movie!

I like how she hasn’t commented on the fact the diamonds pearls have their colors and gem placement respective to their diamond and our pearl had her gem on her forehead while Pink had hers on her stomach with pearl having all the colors of the authority. Once again at the time it was a very interesting mystery when it came to the Pink’s pearl. I can’t wait for her reaction to white diamond and her pearl.
Remember what Bismuth said about Rose's sword? It's made to be able to one-shot any Gem, but can't damage their stone.
This and Blue telling Steven that she was "shattered" by a sword should tell that Pink might not have actually been shattered.

The strongest hint (one ep' before the reveal) was when blue said to pink "as long as you are there, the colony would be complete".
That gave pink/rose the idea to "not be there" any more
That proposal is one of my favorite scenes in the show.. To quote Bismuth, "THEY'RE MY FAVORITE COUPLE"

Maybe, but instead of Pink wanting the gems on Earth to have independence instead it would be seen more as their diamond is giving them an order to enact her rebellion instead of it being their individual choices
One last thing; we as an American audience were SO unfathmobauly fortunate that we got the wedding episode that you’ll react to in the coming week! When Rebecca Sugar and their team were working on these final episodes of Steven Universe, Sugar wanted to make a very impactful scene in the wedding episode. However, Sugar was informed that if that scene were to pass, they’d likely lose a considerable amount of funding to continue the show, due to many conservative countries refusing to air the episode at all.
Honestly, most countries like Russia and many others that are against anything LGBT related, censored most episodes that featured the gems-especially Ruby & Sapphire-showing any affection, since most of them appear very effeminate. Ruby in many of them had (I kid you not) a mustache, and they chose to refer to Ruby with male pronouns instead, trying desperately to make the episodes as hétéronormative as possible.
I won’t spoil what EXACTLY happens in the wedding episode, but let’s just say…Sugar gave the conservative viewership an underhanded middle finger during that episode, so much so that the wedding episode in many countries was flat out BANNED. The last couple of episodes of Season 5 and an additional series called “Steven Universe Future,” have many remaining plot points in the show rushed due to the fallout of the lost revenue following the wedding episode, but Sugar wanted to tell their story with this show, and they never lost sight of that vision. The fact that many queer youth myself included feel a bit better, more seen, more comfortable with ourselves, and more willing to share our stories, is proof I think that Rebecca Sugar succeeded with Steven Universe! It’s perhaps one of the most touching episodes in this show, and I can’t wait to see your reaction to it next week! 🤩
Yeah the pink/rose twist is pretty great and makes you view the whole series in a different light on rewatch.
Yes, realising that everything we saw and they went through, was a complete waste of time, THEY COULD'VE ENDED THIS SHIT BACK IN SEASON 1, WHEN JASPER FIRST SHOWED UP! HE COULD'VE BEEN TREATED LIKE A GOD. FIGHTING HOMEWORLD AT THIS POINT WAS FOR NOTHING!
Well, there’s no guarantee that it would’ve been that easy.
At that point in time Steven’s powers were still barely developing, and it was only him, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. Not to mention the character development all the characters had yet to go through.
With those factors in mind, it probably wouldn’t have gone the way it did in canon. Maybe worse.
Multiple times where the show hinted the reveal: season 3 finale revealed what happened to her, but pearl couldn’t say anything. Every time it was brought up, she closed her mouth. When they were at the house, pearl was gonna reveal it. During the trials at the beginning of season 5, the theory is confirmed.
You will enjoy the rest of the show, but will have MANY questions
The Rose = Pink Diamond reveal had a lot of hints to it, yet it was so satisfying yet simultaneously shocking to learn! One hint I noticed was in the episode where we saw Rose and the gems play the song “What Can I Do for You?” with Greg, when Rose was first falling in love with him. Rose sang;
I like your band
And I like your song
I like the way
Human beings play
*I like playin' along*
She literally sang about how she liked playing along, playing a part, A PERSONA that she actually wasn’t!
Also, you might remember Pearl was always against Amethyst shapeshifting, when they played ‘Steven tag’ way back when in the first season. Even though Garnet and Amethyst were quick to pretending to be Steven in tag, Pearl absolutely refused and in fact NEVER shape-shifted throughout the entire series, and THIS incident is why. Shape-shifting in present day brought Pearl trauma and that’s why she couldn’t take part.
And a final one I can remember is when either Peridot or the Ruby squad brought the Crystal Gems to the Moonbase back in Season 2 or 3, and Steven hated how one of those parties was (at the time) badmouthing Rose, he snapped and shouted that his mother would never shatter a gem. Garnet told Steven to stop yelling, because Pearl began covering her mouth, shaking and trembling in fear, another sign that she played a part.
And the trial in Season 4!! Zircon pointed to Yellow and Blue Diamond saying a Diamond likely shattered Pink, and also asked “and where was her Pearl?!” Zircon wasn’t completely wrong, and nearly came to the answer, despite not having all the facts, much less a complete case.
I’m blanking on so much about this show, and several other key points of referencing this twist, but you get the point! Pink Diamond was selfish, and her desire to protect the Earth was a road to hell with several shattered and corrupted gems, though there was some good intent.
Heck, even the Uncle Grandpa crossover had a hint. He told Steven that he should polish his gem at least twice a year - something you do for a diamond, not a quartz.

I just realized that if the Amethysts, Jaspers and Rose Quartzes were Punk Diamond’s creation, that would technically make Amethyst and Jasper Steven’s sisters or at least cousins.

For 9:40 I think if she did rebel as pink diamond, it would've made the rebellion much weaker in my opinion. Not so much power wise, but more message wise. Especially to the other three Diamonds because instead of looking at her like she was an authority figure rebelling against the system.
She would look more like a kid who begged for something, got the thing after whining for long enough, and then throwing a tantrum because she didn't want it anyway.
And for regular gems, I think it gets weakened again because instead of the rebellion leader being this, "same as any other gem" showing that any gem could be different or themselves if they just chose to. It would look more like a weird coup from another authority figure.
Like "oh yeah we can only get freedom when it's a diamond choosing it for us."
Few Gems would rebel to protect Earth, but apparently many would be willing to fight for the principles "Rose Quartz" promoted.
So, Pink Diamond fought first and foremost to save Earth's life, and secondarily to free Gems, the cause that actually brought allies to her side; while the Crystal Gems presumably fought alongside "Rose" for various other reasons, with saving the Earth not on their lists.
Yeah Rose’s decisions in the rebellion definitely can come under a lot of scrutiny.

I hate to say it but I feel like most of the SU fandom is just stupid or forgetful because Rose clearly is not a bad person or the villain and yet people say that she is the main antagonist In the case of what Rebeca Sugar has said about the character of Rose while I usually take into consideration what the author says about a character because it adds insight. In this case, Sugar so clearly does not understand her show because what she says about Rose does not line up at all with what Rose actually does. It is honestly confusing how she could draw those line between the show's version of Rose and how she sees the character.

Great reaction the ending had me dying, though you might not want to be so short of breath just yet. There is still tons of wild stuff that is going to happen in the show.
We still have the Diamond Days final arc to get through, but I can say that there was a lot of controversy surrounding the Rose-is-Pink reveal. At the time I thought that Pink should have revolted against her sisters as a Diamond, but I also admitted that I wasn't sure about how much loyalty Pink Diamond could have counted on from even her own legion (Jasper, for example). After all, I had previously believed that Pink Diamond would be like Blue and Yellow: towering figures inspiring fear and devotion for millennia, and not a mere dwarf of an off-color Diamond.
Garnet was the very first ever multi-gem fusion. Before that only the same kinds had ever fused.
I think there were other multi-gem fusions before Garnet. But Garnet is likely the first one to survive for so long. Since cross-fusions are sentenced to death on homeworld.

IDK if someone already said it but since the beginning of the series we've never seen Pearl shapeshift (like Amethyst transforming into Tiger, a ball etc and Garnet into Steven when they go see Lars in space) and the reason she doesn't do it was "reveled" in "A Single Pale Rose". I believe that situation built some trauma on Pearl, she really suffered doing that and continued to suffer all those years later. It's really sad. Pearl is a well developed character, I bet everyone hated her at some level at the beginning and see her grown in the series is what makes her my favorite character!

Wild ride time! There was a slight hiatus between ASPR and the next set of episodes, which was plenty of time for a series rewatch to catch the clues to the twist and they did plant some seeds

I think pink fought as rose, not just cause she ended up shapeshifting to rose to look at the earth, but it’s a lot easier to fight against abusive family if you aren’t the target of abuse, and it separates herself from the abusive situations the diamonds inflicted on her.

I feel like bismuth got the short end of the stick from rose, for someone who was claiming to fight for freedom and so that their friends wouldn’t die Rose was very uninvested in it. Bismuth wanted to shatter/kill those who wanted to destroy the earth and her friend, and was Imprisoned for it by her biggest inspiration.
To be fair the person Bismuth wanted to shatter was Rose. I agree that Rose did not handle the situation the best but honestly there was not a good way to handle it.
The way i think about it is that they did pink diamond’s character development backwards. The complete gentle loving person everyone knew was pink diamond near the end of her life while the immature and bratty one was her at the beginning of her journey
Amethyst is that aunt that closest in age to the nephew and the behave like sibling.

It makes alot of sense when you think about. The way Rose acted and treated people when we "knew her" was pretty bratty and about getting what she wanted. Luckily what she wanted was people to be free so she was a good brat haha

Can’t go back and A single pale rose are my favorite episodes. Distant Shore when it released was at the time my favorite song cause I love it when Lapis sings. The pink diamond reveal was so crazy the internet went into a controversial battle and it was a head scratcher cause they started to think about things from season 1 and onward with the truth of Rose being pink diamond.
I love rewatching this show with reactors and catching stuff I missed my first time. Like, all of the times Pearl would grab her mouth like she wanted to tell something, but would physically stop herself..it must have been awful.

Too many people hate on Rose/Pink but they keep forgetting that this is character development in reverse and Pink herself was an the embodiment of childish imperfection removed from White Diamond's self.
Wouldn't you refer to it as character assassination in that case? It also ruins Pearl's character arc because she was supposed to be a "strong independent pearl", but even after her diamond "died" she was still bound to her orders, literally forced to cover her mouth so she can never speak of it to anyone. It also puts her love in kind of a weird light, especially when the only human we see her have an attraction to looks like rose/pink diamond. Rose took advantage of Pearl's feelings because she knew that pearl would always agree to whatever she wanted to do. She was shown fooling around with multiple human men over the years, until she finally settled down with Greg and gave her life for a him in order to make a child that she could push all of her problems onto. Pink diamond just ran away, she could have done so much more her fellow gems. They destroy her character even more when they introduce spinel, but I won't get into that here.
@@MadLover4690 Pink gave Pearl a choice to remain with her and possibly die if Homeworld defeated them (the holorecording in Rose's Scabbard). Pink was involved with humans before the rebellion and of course long afterward, so Pearl was fooling herself if she thought that "Rose" was going to be in exclusive relationship with her.
@@baraxor i feel like that's less of a choice and more of an ultimatum. I mean, what other choice did pearl have but to follow rose? On one hand, she's literally a servant so she's obligated to follow her diamond, and on the other hand, she is deeply infatuated with rose, so she would have followed her regardless. Also in "sword to the sword" it just makes the reveal that pearl would always throw her life away to protect rose even more cringe. That's just a slave protecting her master, especially when rose didn't feel anything for her romantically. Also rose could have easily protected herself with that big freaking shield, she's a diamond so she should have been plenty strong enough to handle herself. 💀

If Pearl wanted she could have "shattered" Pink and just gone back to Homeworld to be assigned to another high-ranking Gem.
Some believe that Pearl would have been programmed to follow her mistress in any and all circumstances, but for myself I'm of the opinion that Pearl also wanted to follow and be with Rose/Pink because she genuinely (and jealously) loved and admired her...unlike virtually every other "uppercrust" Gem, latter-day Pink Diamond treated her subordinates with courtesy and respect. Even in her brat persona, Pink Diamond inspired enough beyond-the-call-of-duty loyalty from Pink Pearl for the latter to conspiratorily shield her mistress from the spying of the other Diamonds, which very likely resulted in her being removed from PD's service and turned into White's zombie puppet.
@@baraxor you must have missed the part where I stated that pearl was also infatuated with rose. I already claimed that as a fact. There's no way in hell that pearl could shatter a diamond and just go back to homeworld. The diamonds would have her executed for allowing pink to get killed without calling for help or anything. They would be immediately suspicious of her since she is supposed to be with her at all times. Even during "the trial" episode, the diamonds start questioning who would be able to get close to pink, let alone kill her. If pearl returned, she'd be a prime suspect, so she really had no choice. Either possibly die fighting a war that pink asked her to start (by "shattering" her and starting a rebellion), or don't go along with her plan and get shattered by the diamonds for allowing their sister to be killed? There's the ultimatum.
Edit: since you brought up the previous pink pearl, pearl could also have the same fate if they don't outright kill her. Either way there's no way white diamond would allow her to continue working as if nothing happened.
Also, pink respected her subordinates? Sure she did. She respected them so much that she lied to the gems closest to her and made them fight a war that they had no hope of winning, which lead to 99% of them becoming corrupted or killed. She also imprisoned bismuth just because she disagreed with her war tactics...? You can't just start a war and get cold feet when you have to kill gems that are upholding what you're rebelling against. Let's not forget the cluster that she never seemed to mention to the gems. How did she not know about it when she was supposed to be in charge of monitoring the earth's colonization? Was she that aloof that she couldn't be bothered? I mean I feel like the writers forgot about it too since it was never truly resolved (all it would take is for it to lose control one day to destroy the earth... even in the end the implications of its existence are glossed over)

Rose being a diamond makes Pearl's obsession with her so much worse because Pearl's are slaves to the diamonds. And the concept of a slave falling for there master is pretty messed up and wrong.
not so sure about that but a guess that varies from country to country. my country has a very mixed heritage and always was "kinda" open to interracial relationships even on the heyday of slavery most of the romance literature had relationships like that (initiated by both parts and both genders).

From what I've heard, Steven Universe was supposed to have at least a 6th, possibly more seasons, but the execs at CN gave Rebecca an ultimatum.
She could either cut the wedding episode and have more seasons, or keep the episode and Steven Universe would be ending at season 5.
Because of this, season 5 is a bit rushed to make sure the full story is told.
Also I love white shirt amethyst so much. The self confidence and empathy suit her so well
Amethyst has always been my favorite of the 3, but that moment where she's trying to talk to steven and tells him she won't fall apart on him made me completely sure she was my favorite. She such a big sister

I was like “So…Steven is the Son of Pink Diamond!?” As soon as I finished watching the episode A Single Pale Rose, God it was so shocking!
So, Rose being Pink Diamond had been a theory going around since before we even knew there was a Pink Diamond (the existence of a 4th diamond was, itself, a running theory for a bit). So these last couple episodes leading up to the reveal were HYPE AS HELL for all of us who were on board the theory train at the time.

OH boy where to begin here. that entire episode i kept shaking so hard. at first i was all "pearl pretended to be rose to kill PD" to "THE THEORISTS WERE RIGHT?!?!" rose being PD was one of the first theories made and they were eating good that day! and rose was....a bit short sighted, but she meant well.
oh no! garnet! shes broken! but we finally get to see pearls full undisclosed life with rose/pd, and how everything came about. its a hell of a ride. and how pd appeared to the other diamonds.
also we can go into gems is just never touched upon again? "Thats why i get to be surface" ouch. and pearls aversion to eating and shapeshifting makes much more sense. also rose is basically pearl's oc xD
amethyst being a good grown up gem and not trying to make steven solve all these grown up issues we love to see it! "why is she a cowboy?!" and steven wrapping up and covering up the pizza just like his emotions, but deflecting to try to help amethyst instead of himself.

I may be looking at it the wrong way...but after rewatching Now We're Only Falling Apart, it seems like that (contrary to popular belief) Rose was more of a follower and GARNET was the TRUE leader of the Crystal Gems.
Sure, Rose led the rebellion and inspired everyone but she barely had a clue on how to behave on Earth. It was thanks to Gems like Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst and even humans like Greg that helped her grow into a better person. Essentially, she had character development...but in reverse
The most relatable thing about these episodes is Ruby confiding to Steven how all she think about is what Sapphire would like and want to do. Even almost five years after my husband passed away, all I can think is that very same thing. "Would he have liked this food?" "Would he have liked this show?" "Would he have liked this game" and I can never know.
Pink diamond/rose is such a grey character, not a villain but also technically not a good person either, she started a war faked her death and just disappeared into Steven probably knowing it wasn't the best idea since the gem war was *still* going on. But the war was started because she saw beautie in the earth and humans, she wanted to save it and free gems to be and do whatever they wanted. All of this is the reason I don't like her but I also don't hate her.
