the thing about Lars' character is that there really isn't a traumatic event; it's just social anxiety. he's spent the last four seasons hiding behind what he thought a real man was supposed to act like, but all the while, he was just too afraid to be who he really is: with anyone. not his parents, not the cool kids, not even Sadie. It's imposter syndrome on repeat. that idea of masculinity/ popularity that he had, and lived by, was the one thing that kept him from what he really wanted: to be accepted for who he is. I always found it tragic that he had to die to be free of this social anxiety: he had to experience this horrible, traumatic event, literal galaxies away from everything he has ever known or cared about, to be himself. he is a misfit, and the off colors taught him that that was okay.
I'm really glad he got some sort of redemption because I always felt like he was holding back. Some people say it was rushed, but I'm just happy he's able to...well be happy ya'know?

Interesting detail: The tree inside Lion's mane is an Acacia tree, which is a tree from Africa, where lions live. Lars' tree is a Narra tree, which is the national tree of the Philippines. Which implies that Lars is Filipino. And if we assume they truly die once their tree loses all its leaves, we can see Lion's tree has much less leaves than Lars' does, implying Lion is much *much* older than Lars

Them living longer and not just forever also lines up with the slow heartbeat. Because of a lot of different biological factors, just about all life get the same amount of heartbeats. So species with lower heart rates do live longer.

8:42 remember Bismuth, the maker of the sword Rose used literally said "It could destroy the body but never the gem" which is why she created the breaking point. Assuming Blue is referring to Roses main sword that is.

While Lars's change from zero to hero was sudden, it wasn't entirely unexpected once he began to recognize his own faults. Also, it's been said that the ones who perform heroism "above and beyond the call of duty" have given up or overcome their natural instinct of self-preservation, to the point that the hero doesn't expect to live in any case...and once he was on Homeworld, Lars would have realized that it was unlikely that he would survive for long on that world (no food or water, pursued by every instrument at the Diamonds' disposal).
Blue Diamond was by far the one Gem who wanted Rose Quartz destroyed, and even so she insisted on holding what she considered to be a fair trial for "Rose Quartz" and not just shatter her straight away as Yellow Diamond wanted.
Notice the reaction of Yellow and Blue Pearls when Blue Zircon asked the court "And where was her Pearl?"
Blue Zircon saying that "we've all heard the rumors" about Pink Diamond's demise seems to confirm that the end of Pink Diamond--the act that really began the thousand year Gem Rebellion--was something that the rest of the Diamond Authority wanted to keep as secret as much as possible from the common cuts of Gems, at least as far as details were concerned. Thus, Peridot's complete puzzlement at Pearl's mention of the "Crystal Gems" back in Marble Madness. Blue Zircon apparently only received the secret official report of Pink Diamond's shattering just before she was to represent "Rose Quartz".
Just to add: whatever was in that official report obviously didn't include a pic identifying a certain Gem, which Blue Zircon would have used to buttress her conspiracy theory...that or Blue Zircon being an Era 2 Gem doesn't know the identity of the Gems involved in the rebellion, and details of the war probably weren't in the report about Pink Diamond's shattering.
The biggest twist in this show was finding out that Lion was actually just a dead lion the whole time.

To me I don’t see what Connie is doing is fair. Steven literally had no other choice and continuing to fight would’ve just put everyone else in danger. I understand her being sad and being a little hurt, but being angry and ignoring him…

If they would’ve fused, Topaz would’ve seen Rose’s gem anyways and all of them would be captured. Connie’s smart, she should know that.
Connie’s reaction is mainly justified, also how she is a kid and she thought they were a team, but he basically just gave up.
However, I do not agree with her completely ignoring everything and assuming that Steven should know exactly what to do to fix this whole mess. I get her wanting to be alone, but she should have at least communicated _that_ to him. Not to mention Lion taking her side? He was hurt as well, sure, but he’s literally _Steven’s Lion._ Not Connie’s, and they both just disappeared to Steven, especially with him coming back from such a traumatic event. Idk. This definitely wasn’t my favorite moment of the show.

Season 5 was crazy and the first few episodes were soooo good especially the trial. I remember when Lars died I was like wait hold on a damn minute cried a little then he got brought back💀
S5 was crazy but also the least well written season of the entire show(one of the reasons being Connie in the next few episodes) especially the horrible plot twist near the end that breaks the series' whole narrative

It's kind of creepy to think that these gem shattering robonoids are just all over the place down there. Like if you accidentally fall off one of the platforms high above or like off one of the buildings, you're screwed. Makes me wonder if the Diamonds just toss gems off the side that don't do what they want 😰 And they would say "If you fall down there, then you're Off-Color anyways." Like making that mistake makes you off-color

This really brings me back. It makes me miss Steven Universe as a whole 😭
Some people simply have social anxiety. Teens especially often say and do bad things because they're still learning to interact. Throw in extreme and alien situations like this and it's even more understandable. No trauma is needed to explain why Lars acts as he does. He's just being a normal teen, but a side of being a teen we often don't see well depicted in media. Acting thoughtful and seeing things from others perspectives comes naturally to some, but it's still a skill that many need to work at to learn. And Lars isn't a bad guy. He just doesn't have those skills yet. That's why I love his character.

@@xmant8842 Yeah! The way that the he basically convinces everyone that Rose is innocent because there was no way that she would be able to do it! Then you are left with a question of, who did, and he points to the diamonds, that was hilarious!
@@maxdon2001 I thought something was fishy about Pearl wearing a pink diamond symbol on her flight suit, as well as Pink Diamond's palanquin stopping in the middle of nowhere on Earth. I began to wonder whether Pink Diamond was coming around to Rose Quartz's point of view and becoming a secret Crystal Gem, and this would have been seen as a direct threat by the more hard-nosed members of the Diamond Authority.

I genuinely hate the story arc where Connie is ignoring Steven. It should have been two episodes at most but it went on for longer than almost all of the actually interesting story arcs involving home world. I genuinely can’t understand why the writers thought that their audience wanted to focus on this compared to the actual story of the show.
I kind of feel the same. Pretty much the only episode I watch in the "connie is upset with steven" arc is Kevin Party. The rest of it, I just can't help but feel like connie is in the wrong and being pretty stupid. I can kind of understand her, but she's definitely wrong imo. They had literally no chance of winning. Steven didn't give up like she claims he did, he surrendered. There's a difference

@@xmant8842 Steven broke the promise he made back in Sworn to the Sword, in which he promised Connie (and Pearl) that when the time came, they would fight together. Also, the problem wasn't that he gave up in the end, it was giving up at the very beginning...he made no effort to defend Connie against Topaz, because he had already conceived his rash plan to sacrifice himself, without talking about the possibility of this action with Connie (his jam-bud) long beforehand.
@@baraxor exactly! The whole point of sworn to the sword was Steven saying to Connie "I don't want you to die for me let's promise we're going to do this together." And then what did he do? Gave himself up to die, and didn't let them do it together. They had no way to save him, he was apparently going straight to his death... She must have been distraught and then when she tried to tell him that, he blew her off and said no you're fine. Yeah, she was mad.

Finally… the finale season (but not the end of course) begins! And we finally see the long awaited redemption for Lars. I’ve been waiting for that since last video! Lars literally had to die and be reborn as Pink Lars for him to become a solid character. Though, I did see his flaws that were leading to this moment.
I seriously can’t wait to see Krysta’s face when she finds out Wha mystery’s have yet to resolve… such as of course, what really happened to Pink Diamond… I guess we want and see

Lars was trying to be someone that everyone thought was cool. That bad boy type of personality portrayed in movies who get all the popular girls. But deep down he's a nice guy who wants to bake and protect his friends. In a way he's like me. My family knows my true personality, but around certain people I try to be proper and nice, but in reality I want to make jokes, play games, go crazy and have fun. Don't get me wrong, I have fun with my family, but they are a lot more "calm" and "collected" than me.

I don't know, I guess it would be satisfying if there was some trauma or reason for Lars to have had the insecurities he did, but it's not really necessary. It's just the way some people are; you get stuck in patterns of thinking that only hurt you and everyone around you. What Lars really needed was a therapist and maybe some anxiety meds, although I guess dying on an alien planet worked too?
People like stories that make sense. If something terrible happened to Lars, then that means it was justified for him to have acted the way he did. But Lars just kinda sucked of his own accord, because that's what happens to people sometimes. It doesn't mean he doesn't deserve sympathy, and it doesn't mean that anything he did was excusable. He was somebody who needed help but wasn't in a place to accept it, and that's frustrating.
I know a lot of people who hate/hated Lars, but honestly I'm glad to have seen a character like him in a kid's show. It's a hard topic to get into.

POV: You rewatch the show and realize the lawyer was right.
Thoughts before I start the video, just looking at the title: *screams* it's not a redemption arc!!! Lars was a jerk, yes, there's no denying that. But is that worthy of needing to be redeemed of? Hell no. I dislike that mindset and every time it's used for Lars I lose my mind. Putting that aside, let's get into the video, I have been waiting for this since the last one dropped.
During The Trial: That shot of the Diamonds *is* fire. it's so damn good. I love this whole episode really.
"This lawyer sucks!" lol incorrect, Blue Zircon is a treasure!
During Off Colors: all the Off Colors are great, Paddy in particular is adorable
"Come on Lars! There's no way he died from that!" uhhhh I dunno.... he was sitting on a thing that exploded and got blasted into a really hard wall. if the explosion didn't kill him it might have been the impact. That scar over his eye seems to indicate shrapnel might have went through there from the explosion.
During Lars' Head: "Pink Lars, much better than the old Lars" OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH I'm gonna mcfrickin' lose it!!!
There's one particular moment that you reacted to briefly but I want to talk about. Lars' "You brought me back to life! Just let be somebody who deserved it." Like obviously, I get how he feels that way, he knows he's been a jerk and wants to make up for it but.... he was always worthy of it, no matter how much of an asshole he appeared to be. Because we got glimpses he *wasn't* an asshole; we see it as early as Lars and the Cool Kids. I said it in the comments of the last video; Lars is by no means my favorite character but I will go to bat for him because... I don't know, I find his character growth (before his death) interesting. And honestly I hate that people started to like him only after he died, it doesn't sit right with me. Lars had worth before becoming a pink zombie.
During Dewey Wins: God fuck Steven please.......... Connie going "I'm hurt!" and Steven like "lol, no you're not!" is so frustrating. Like, I get it I guess; he literally just watched someone die so comparatively Connie being emotionally hurt isn't that bad but still.
Also, jesus... Sadie's voice this episode.... the Cursed Lamar 11 (it affects Steven the most in Lamar boarded episodes, struck Lars in Tiger P). At least Steven learned his lesson but did he really have to learn it through Dewey.
After: I just want to say I'm not in these comments to start a fight or to be angry, I just want to enjoy someone reacting to a show I love that seems to be enjoying a lot. It just takes the wind out of my sails when people talk smack about Lars
I Loved Lars from the start and knew they were going to do something big with him, but still loved his character before these episodes. These episodes and later ones just made me love him more.
I think its important to respect other peoples dislike for characters, but also its good to stand for your beliefs. I relate in a way to how you feel about lars. For me tho I had a bestie who reminded me a lot of lars. And God damn I felt like Sadie a lot with him. The frustration like, hello I know there is a better person under there; and also my god hello if you want someone so badly then im available. Thank God he wasn't secretly into thick chick's like lars tho cos if he had shown interest, that would have been a heckin abusive relationship. Either way I was so absolutely fascinated with him as a character. I think he is written so damn well, and is a good reflection on how some guys be like in real life. Do I think he's a complete doosh? Absolutely. Bad character? Never.
Tbh Connie was unreasonably being selfish in that episode coz she knew of the risks of Steven's life, he made the logical option of sacrificing himself coz if they lost, everyone Aquamarine had possesion of would've been taken to homeworld Nd if they won, the Diamonds would've been curious as to how tf an Aquamarine was defeated and would've investigated Earth thus endangering the whole planet.
Connie was bitching that episode for very selfish reasons and then what makes it worse is that she just allows Lion to leave wih her like wtf, Lion's not yours, he's Steven's pet and why tf does he go wih her anyway, he should have more of an attachment to technically the person who saved his life, this is one of the reasons why I don't like S5, it's the least well written season Nd then there's the horrendously rushed finale Nd terrible plot twist that breaks the narrative of the entire series.
@@easyk4187 I dont think her reaction was unreasonable at all; Steven broke a promise that they made all the way back in s2; They promised they'd fight together, no matter what. Steven's martyr complex seemed to make him forget that in the heat of the moment. And then when he gets back and she tells him she was hurt by his decision, he disregards it, which stings even more. I don't blame her for not wanting to talk to him after that for a while.
As for taking Lion, sure he's technically Steven's pet but Lion has shown he just does what he wants and I guess what he wanted was to be around Connie. I chuckle imagining how her parents reacted to this giant pink animal just coming up to their door and, after attempting to shoo him away, he roars a portal and boom, he's in Connie's room (The Maheswarans then became cat people XD).
On the topic of how you feel about the season, that's definitely a subjective argument but your not wrong that it was rushed but thats more because network made them speedrun the end after the [REDACTED Krystal Spoilers], I do not blame the crew for that. I have my problems with the finale, it definitely is rushed at parts, but for what it is, I think it is very solid (it has the best 10-odd minutes of this show imo) as is the whole season. Also the plot twist does not break the narrative as they have planted hints throughout the show, it is a really great twist
@@relientlykrazie6011 Wtf was Connie going to do in that moment Nd it's shown to us multiple times that she stands no chance against the Diamonds. The most she can objectively be is just Steven's emotional support at best but like I said in my previous comment, in the heat of the moment. Steven made the most logical option of saving everybody(besides Lars for obvious reasons) Nd the way Connie was written up to that point makes it seem she'd understand why Steven did what he did. I'd much prefer if she'd told Steven that the decision he made hurt her coz of like you said he broke a promise but then she aknowledges that thinking that kinda makes her selfish(which I explained it does) Nd it turn makes her feel worse kinda like how Lois feels in an episode of Superman Nd if you've seen that show when Clark dissapears from something important to handle Superman business(Lois knows he's Superman)
S5 overall is a horribly written season especially with the plot twist I'm talming abt. I can try my best to explain Nd go deeper as to why but this vid pretty sums it up for me:

These episodes are so great. I love Lars character development in these episodes. I don't like the whole "connie won't talk to steven" arc that starts though. I've said it before, but I think connie was being kind of stupid. I can kind of understand, but she was definitely being stupid. There was no other logical choice for steven. The way I see it, there's a difference between surrendering and giving up. Giving up is when you stop even though you have a chance. Steven surrendered since they had no chance. He didn't give up like she claims he did
Exactly, Connie was unnecessaryily bitching in these next few episodes but I also don't like how they made Steven somewhat stupid when she leaves. Steven should be able to understand when someone's emotionally hurt compared to physically being hurt. I'd see a S1 Steven being "ignorant" but not a S5 Steven who's gone through so much character development

@@easyk4187 i don't think that he was stupid to her emotional feelings it's just that he just went through HELL on gem world and he was willing to give his life for them. . . .and a person you put your life on the line to protect is now guilting you for making the most rational decision to ensure their safety. In that moment when he didn't understand it was valid. If you almost maybe die and come back you won't expect that person to then be upset with you even if you can tell they are it would instantly throw you off. Cause it's like she's ignoring the fact he really could've been gone for good and like Guilting him for doing the right thing. Like he damned if he do stay and was damned if he left. Like she's traumatizing him more after a traumatic experience.
