Our experience was not much different from yours. We too will be doing a lot of renovation (the house was built in 1900 and thankfully most of the wood work is in amazing condition). Looking forward to seeing your renovation projects!

Seriously, the whole house buying process is a ripoff for your average consumer. Building brand new is a whole other sleazy sales game. When you do flips as a profession, it's yet a WHOLE other ballgame: Most of the holders want to just dump the property, usually there aren't the back and forth with the realtors, because you're getting foreclosures. If you enjoy the reno/demo process, it might be something to explore.
