Love this Brazilian style of singing: no overdone vocal acrobatics; simply the beauty of the human voice.

@@Beowulf_93Oh Great Mythical Hero, I had not thought about the technicality of it but I suppose you're right. To be honest, I have nothing against variations on a note, so to speak, when it is an essential element of the genre, as in Carnatic and Rai music, which I love. However, I find myself becoming irritated when the embellishments are intended to draw attention to the singer rather than to the song. Perhaps I'm just irritable.

I was in a kind of rock band in college, everyone picked two songs on which they could sing or play whatever instrument they wanted; and we would learn all of the combined songs and then perform them at a theatre concert as well as a dance.
One girl picked this song but could not sing the Portugues at all. I fell in love with the song and was compelled to learn the song myself, which in turn made me fall for the language, as well. A year later I travelled to Brazil for two months; it was my first time out of the country; I flew from Anchorage, AK to Rio de Janeiro.

      @PAWiley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

@@jackkerouak Yeah, going back after 2 months to Anchorage middle of winter was rough, lol. Thank you! I'll be back one day I'm sure.
I went when I was 19. In Alaska that's too young to drink or go into bars/clubs. I'd snuck in once or twice, but in Rio I was a kid in a candy store. I went with 2 friends; all 3 of us musicians, and two of us had been training Brazilian jiu jitsu for about a year, and we wanted to train down there. He was older than me, and once I got comfortable to the city life in Rio, at 19, rolling around on dirty mats with other men was the last thing on my mind. To be honest, so was traveling or doing anything touristy. We went to Bahia for a week for Carnaval (I got into Olodum and followed through the streets with them), but afterwards I felt homesick not for Alaska but for my apartment in Barra da Tijuca (we stayed in Leblon 1 month and Barra 1 month), and I missed the girls id met there and another friend id chanced to meet who I knew as a child back in Anchorage (that was crazy).
So I took a plane back to Rio and my other friends took a bus and traveled around Brazil a bit, I missed out on that cuz I just wanted to get back to rio.
But after I got back to Anchorage, I bought a book in the Tareveler's Tales series on Brazil; it's a compilation of stories and articles written by authors on their travelers ALL throughout the enormous country of Brazil. I was so fascinated by how many different kinds of places I got to visit through that book, and have yearned to go back to Brazil ever since. But next time I plan to spend my time traveling throughout the country, not spend it all playing guitar on the beach and going to clubs and meeting girls (though that is fun.)

Astrud Gilberto was an icon of the mid-1960s here in America. She just recently passed away at 83 years 'young' on June 5, 2023. Many don't know who she is, even seniors, but I do and I'll never forget her and that better time in history: 1964 - 65.
If you hear her songs sung in Brazilian Portuguese it's even prettier.

As a teenager I fell big time for Bossa in the late 50s and as a drummer I immediately learned the beat. I'm 83 now and play in a Jazz trio. We do gigs and our fine Sax man, who is big Paul Desmond fan has incorporated many of Paul's Bossa/Samba numbers which I play on Bongos and that rhythm is very popular with even young people brought up on Rock.

I discovered Bossa Nova/Brazilian jazz in the spring of 2009 while vacationing in San Juan. The boutique hotel had this type of music piped all through the halls, elevators and lounging areas. SOOOO relaxing. I caught this on Live 365 and have been hooked ever since. This and Bim Bom are my all time favorites!

Sorry, but Bossa nova is not Jazz, and neither is Brazilian Jazz or some type of jazz, even though it may be similar but Bossa Nova came from a different way of playing samba and it is a Brazilian rhythm.

Here's where "drinking water" part comes from:
In Brazil, we have the expression "water that birds don't drink from" to refer to alcohol. So in contrast to that expression, "drinking water" could be interpreted as "sobriety".
Yet, a Brazilian musician Joao Bosco said that Vinicius was referring to aquavit, a distilled Norwegian spirit, in the song.
I guess you choose whether you want to see this song as about drowning you sorrows or getting sober after a heartbreak.

Singing with a perfect tone and no sign of vibrato is not as easy as you might think. It is an art form that is a signature sound for the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is also used for effect with musical instruments. Try it some time and you will be surprised at how much focus it takes.

O medo pode matar o seu coração
    Água de beber

    Água de beber
    Água de beber camará
Eu nunca fiz coisa tão certa
    Entrei pra escola do perdão
    A minha casa vive aberta
Abri todas as portas do coração

    Água de beber

    Que só me deu desilusão
    É que o amor é uma tristeza

The song gets me back to the year 2001, when I (Japanese) was working at a Thai restaurant in Sydney. When this song was being played in the restaurant, one of the female staff members (Thai) said, “I could listen to it forever!” The (local Australian) owner of the restaurant agreed, saying “Yeah, I’d like to listen to it forever, too!,” which was exactly what I felt as well!
As a matter of fact, none of us understood the Portuguese lyrics, but we all shared the same feelings - an incident that shows how powerful music is across cultural differences!
The unique beauty of this song is really admirable. It makes me feel relaxed and enchanted, somehow lost in peace.
