Led by a group named Indians of All Tribes and it's leaders: Richard Oakes, LaNada War Jack, than LaNada Means, John Trudell, Stella Leach, and Al Miller.
The takeover aimed to reclaim Alcatraz as Native land. Lasting for 19 months, the occupation sparked widespread awareness of Indigenous rights and issues. Through archival footage, interviews, and historical analysis, this video explores the motivations, challenges, and lasting impact of the Alcatraz occupation.
The protest gained public support for Native Americans in fight for their rights. Numerous famous people supported the protest. Jane Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Marlon Brando, Jonathan Winters, Buffy Sainte Marie and Dick Gregory visited the island to show their support. The band Creedence Clearwater Revival supported the takeover with a 15000 dollar donation.
This action ignited a flame in red power Native activism, laying the groundwork for actions and protests organized by the American Indian Movement (AIM) and other groups.

Do you know anybody that was on Alcatraz during the takeover?
no but this was the best explanation of this so far
my grandma and mother, her sisters were on the island during the takeover.
@@micahistory not really theres a few lies on here. the oaks daughter didnt fall from the thrid floor down some stairs. she fell on STAIRS but not in a building. my mother who was about 9 years old knew her and played with her before this accident occurred
My Grandfather was there. Quinton Anquoe, Kiowa. Not sure if he was there during the initial takeover or afterwards, but he was there during that time.
Wish more Lawyers would stand up for the natives and on just principles like this one did for these folks and help these people make more waves and enact real change.
Thanks for posting this, it’s very informative.
God bless the First Nations! They will continue to draw strength from the Earth and will always survive.
I just learned about this in an American indigenous studies class in fall quarter! Crazy I lived in California and never knew about it before
Native Lives Matter.
Very much appreciative of this succint and narrated to perfection piece of Historical Archives of Humanity.❤
So how did the U.S. Gov. get around the Treaty of Fort Laramie?
They blatantly ignored it and is still ignoring it despite the court siding with the Souix in 1980 they are currently selling mining rights and land despite it being the land of the Souix and Ponca land
@@Micah2147 If nothing else the U.S. Gov. is good at breaking it's word, they have done it more than not!
The Indians should have that land. Very informative.
they're not indians lol
@@micahistoryyes we are it's on our hospitals and schools I am very proud to be American Indian. Most enrolled members go by American Indian
@@Micah2147 lol we have the same name. Also you're not from india so why keep that name?
I needed this, thank you.
Most of the time people only talk about the jailcell and prisoners. This is an interesting part of Alcatraz history, too. Thanks for the vid!
My brain grew 3 sizes.
There was a lot of talk at my house about this. My Cherokee mother and Creek father wanted to go - but stayed because of the school she was building. Arrowhead School.
Regaurdless of tribe we're all family 😊❤ Mi'kmaq and Iroquois lineage here 😊
💙💜💜💜💜💜💜.
I never knew anything about this. Really interesting. Thanks.
I don't remember the 1964 action (it didn't get into the news), but I definitely remember the 1969 action.
Got first Nation blood in my veins 😊❤
CCR backed us up 😮
The protesters should have taken a deal while they had one because the movements always seem to go awry. Unfortunately, you don't play chicken with the United States Federal Government and win.
They called themselves Indians back then
We still do
Your comment must be incomplete… may you complete it.

Nah bruh you’re simply ignorant
Yes they are and I am guessing you're a Pretindian trying to rewrite history.
Very informative. Good to see finally the law breakers removed.
