แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ม.ค. 2019
  • In 1969, Native American activists used their right to take over abandoned federal land to occupy the island of Alcatraz.
    About Drunk History:
    Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

      Sorry to hear about your cousin's and cousin-in-law's struggles; even sorrier to know that had he came from a "non-s***hole country," his naturalization process would've been much more streamlined. The only way this "system" will ever be fixed is to address, acknowledge and actively strive to annihilate from our policies the United States' original sins of RACISM and it's slightly younger sibling XENOPHOBIA.
      The inevitable shifting of our "demographics" has far too many people fearing our country losing its "identity;" all the while ignoring the fact that one of the major "bragging rights" we like to tout to other nations is our "cultural/ethnic diversity." We need to do some soul searching and come to the conclusion that either we're going to continue to identify ourselves as this "melting pot" we originally claimed to be in both word and deed, or we're going to be no better than the totalitarian/fascist dictatorships we sacrificed lives to fight against.

      Daryl Carr I really wish people could get along. I’m not going to pretend to be colorblind like some white people do, but I wish people could see each other as the brothers and sisters we are instead of dividing each other into groups. Every person is an individual, and no one deserves to be judged by their skin.
      The good thing is that people are fighting against it. I know I sound crazy hippie-ish, but seriously, we need to just see people as people.

    The national park page for Alcatraz is pretty icky when they talk about this. They ignore that the native Americans did have a legal cause to occupy the island, make them sound like they weren’t too organized (a bunch of students) and call them exclusively use the term “Indians”.

    • @dylanmorgan2752
      @dylanmorgan2752 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s wrong to call them exclusively Indians. That said I don’t think they were too organised. It was meant as a short term means of protest to send a message with usually younger people. They aren’t organised particularly well today and they weren’t organised that well in the late 60’s.

      @dylanmorgan2752 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Kay. M True, the pet peeve I have about these shows. Is that they almost make Historical facts too fun for people. These are the same people that you saw in history classes everywhere that never did anything bc it was ‘too boring’ for them. But as soon as you put it in the context of entertainment, guess what it becomes entertaining. But they actually believe they’ve done some in depth research by watching it when in fact if it wasn’t interesting to you then you should’ve worked at it and made it interesting and been involved. I always thought maths was fucking mind numbingly boring yet I never blamed it on maths or my maths teachers because I knew it was 100% down to me and my aptitude or lack of. And that maths was never interesting, simply because I was never interested in it.

    Drunk history should do an episode about Elizabeth Peratrovich
    She was a civil rights activist for the equality of Alaska natives
    And she was credited with advocacy that gained passage for the First Anti discrimination law in the United States.
    She did THAT.
    If drunk history makes an episode about her I will be so happy and cry ❤️😭❤️ please.

I actually went on a tour to Alcatraz when I was little and vaguely remember the tour guide saying something about the graffiti, but it wasn't expanded upon as the whole idea of the tour was to focus on Alcatraz as a former prison and some of the big names that were locked up as well as the hygiene concerns for prisoners. You learn something new everyday.
