Johnny Depp as Ichabod was a great casting choice in that. But I'm curious as to which one is more faithful: The movie (the horseman is trying to claim his head back) or the skit (he's forced to carry around his head for eternity).

But the next day the townspeople only find a smashed pumpkin, and it's inferred that his town rival Brom Bones faked the whole thing. So, it's both and neither, sorta.

I absolutely love the movie, but it has very little to do with the story. Ichabod and the other characters are quite different than the original story describes, and the plot has nothing to do with the source story. It's worth reading, and it's not long. I'm sure you can find it online for free since it's in the public domain. Also, the Disney animated short from the 50s is probably the most faithful and accurate adaptation just as far as maintaining the basic story goes. It's also a great work of animation and Burton drew some inspiration from that aesthetic for the movie.
Side note for those who feel this has ruined the story for them: the actual Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow has no head. That's the whole Headless part. In the story, it gets totally demolished by a cannon ball. That's why he is riding around angry and headless.
It's weird to look back at these sketches with the knowledge that john was probably back on drugs at this point. You'd never guess. Glad he seems to be doing better now.

They could've had the same punchline without making it rapey at the end. I don't know why they ended it like that, this feels like a skit made 10 years ago. I'm a fan of Mulaney but this was uncomfy.
I too had never, ever considered ANY of this, and think Mulany's stint on Big Mouth may have caused permanent damage. But frankly the lack of consent implied at the end was grosser than anything else in the sketch.

Mulaney makes a historically bad sitcom, yet KILLS it in every SNL sketch and frequently acts circles around other guests hosts, many of whom are famous actors. Get John the correct writers and cast and let him create some amazing TV/film comedy!!
If manboy John still lives in NYC, there is no excuse to not bring him back for a sketch or ten every week. Your list of honorary guests is already so long; no harm in adding one more
