I have always send my outdoor knifes to a pro sharpener. But this video made me order a 400 grit wetstone and a 2000 grit wetstone and a leather strap. Now im gonna try it myself. Thanks dude.
My Mora isn’t perfect, but it’s the sharpest it’s ever been. Using the sandpaper was easy. A huge save of time and money. Thank you so much! Amazing results with very little effort and time.!
I just chanced across this video almost by accident (well . . . not quite! LOL). I can't figure out whether you are a craftsman, an artisan, or an artist. I suspect perhaps all three (at the same time)! It was a pleasure watching you take a superb knife for the modest amount f $ it costs and turning it into a Western version of a mini samurai with just a little bit of sand paper! Wow!
10:34 whoa my brand new mora robust wasn't that sharp. Thanks for opening my eyes to the possibilities of sharpening on sandpaper- I'm gonna try it when the edge gets dull.
I am terrible terrible at sharpening I bought a mora garberg messed it up sharpening, got inspired from watching your videos bought a new set of stones, still no luck. You do an amazing job, I guess I'm just stuck with a 90 Dollar paper weight.
Try a fixed angle sharpener. All pretty foolproof, if not brilliantly built. Pay more, get more. I bought a cheap one that was a little shakey, but I use it for all my re-profiling. New stones every 5 knifes or so, depending on the grind. then stropped forever onwards.
I never knew what I was missing until I bought a Mora Clipper 840 for $15.00 US. With that purchase the Sheath was the icing on the cake. The Scandi is safe even in my clumsy hands. Great tip with sandpaper. ATB!
The Forest model comes with TWO profiles, Scandi on the back part( maybe half) and another profile (hollow maybe) of the front - I think the intention was have superior slicing with the front. Mine works great in the kitchen and the woods. A little trickier to sharpen - unless you grind the front to Scandi,
My wife and I have a pair of Mora Companions for hiking/camping. I noticed that I was unable to strike a spark with my knife's spine the time I actually needed it. Solution: use part of the knife edge. Now I need to sharpen it back up. Thanks for the tips!
I got the bushcraft forest a few months back and it just came with a solid green sheath. I like the camo look. I need to do these upgrades to mine as well!
Ya, that’s my knife and sheath Kyle is working on. I totally lucked out with the camo sheath! Must have been a limited edition or something, because I haven’t seen it anywhere else.
Way more interesting than the superbowl. To get that final mirror polish, try automotive polishing compound rubbed in an old section of fire hose. You can screw the hose into your work bench to make it not slip. Works quickly to refine the edge.
Thank you for demonstrating a simple common man fix. Mora has caught a lot of heat for NO 90° spine on that "bushcraft" Forest knife. I'm pretty sure the Forest is a 2000 blade with a different handle. The 2000 spine is not flat ground either. The Kansbul now has a 90° spine, but is not a polished blade like the 2000, similar handle to the stronger Garberg. I still prefer the 2000. I also had to sharpen the Forest and 2000 out of the box. In fairness, I don't know if "had to" is accurate. "Wanted to" is probably better. ;-)
I only squared from where the blade drops to the tip can scrape and use on a fero rod very easily but the main blade is left rounded as its easier on your thumb if you need to choke up on the blade for some carving no need to make it sharp clear accross the back imo .
I recently bought the mora bushcraft black because it was one of 2 mora models available in my area that I can buy in person so far my only complaint is the micro bevel I don't really know what they were thinking putting a micro bevel on it because mine was duller than a city slicks knife right out of the box brand new and I was looking for a video on how to remove the micro bevel thank you for the video
Sand paper works really well and comes in course to ultra fine grit if you want to strop and you haven't got a strop you can use a stack of news paper and any metal polish auto sol etc..- even without the polish paper works it will take longer but you will see the steel rubbing onto the paper
If you want those spefs why not get the Mora Fire Starter, that has the added bonus of being 3.3mm thick instead of 2.5. I prefer the shape of the Mora 2010MG Bushcraft Forest Knife tho, and I like the green handle version.
Great video. You’re very knowledgeable and have an excellent manner of presenting. Subscribed! I’m buying a Mora Companion shortly and will try this technique.
Nicely explained and demonstrated. I have seen other videos on using sandpaper and while I have nothing against stones, the cost of a belt sander and belts (Purchased or home made) is far cheaper, but sandpaper and a few blocks (Commercial or DIY) or a flat surface is unbeatable. And where there is no electricity, then one can rely on sandpaper. Most people use a wooden board (mouse pad for saber/convex grinds), but I like that you had an impermeable or waterproof surface. Was that a section from a counter top? Or was it a glass surface? Wetting the paper and being able to lay it down like you did is a slick way to use it. And the shine on that blade was sweet.
Thanks for your well written comment! I appreciate the support more than you know. The surface I'm using here is actually a slab that was part of a tombstone (not kidding haha). However, the tombstone broke before it could be delivered, so it was milled down to a few smaller bricks, one I have here :-)
I'm able to sharpen my Mora to a razor sharp edge, but I'm having trouble getting a polish finish. Does this mean I'm not spending enough time working my way through the different grits? I'm new to this. Great vids!
Love your style. FYI they call it "knife makers mange"..... thats the condition where knife makers always have patchy hair on their left arm from testing knives.
I've got (3) 511's supposed to be delivered today. I'll be touching them up, squaring off the spine, and who knows what else. These will be backup knives in each kit, with a Companion HD and/or a mini-kukri as a main knife.
Awsome tip I was go in to by stones not now sand paper does the job fine wot do u think about ceramic for touch ups when u out in the bush or were ever
That's weird because all my Mora Bushcraft Blacks came razor sharp and thrown some serious sparks. I wonder why that one is different?? Of course I made mine even sharper as well. It was shaving sharp out the box.
Wow man! You really make it look so easy. Two thumbs up from me dude. You really did a nice job with that knife. I have one of the less expensive knives and was really disappointed when it came with that rounded spine. I would’ve thought they’d all come with a 90 seeing what most people use them for. Nice job dude!
I am glad i looked at this video before buying grindstones worth 100,- Thanks buddy, i'm gonna get some waterproof sandpaper out the shed and start grinding. My brand new Mora isnt very sharp lol, i cant even get through paper without bending it a little, otherwise it just flops around XD
Hello Kyle. Your video is very clear and simple! One question: do you go over both sides of the blade with the sand paper for sharpening? Or you sharpen from one side and you go over the other side just to remove the burr? Thanks
You make some great videos, easy to follow and understand thanks for sharing your knowledge! I'm still learning how to sharpen, can't quite get to razor sharp yet but I'm getting better the more I practice.
Had my knife out yesterday and lit the fire with the ferro rod and some scuffed up birch bark. The rod was super comfy in the hand with that handle you put on it. I feel like doing that to all my ferro rods now haha. I had some small deadstanding birch for the firebox and made a cup of tea. It made for a great snowshoeing afternoon in the woods. I'm used to a much bigger knife and I really like the way this one sits on the hip. Hopefully I will make a video soon. Great instructional video, I need to get me some 2000 grit.
Hey, a Scandinavian here. These stainless blades aren't very popular here. My question is, when all the knives that are sold here, comes with Micro bewel, stailess or "black", is there a good reason not to use it as is? I have been bush crafting here in northern Scandinavia/Lapland with Moras and Varustelekas "Terävä" knives mostly, but can't really tell if there is a difference. Well, i don't shave... so do i want my knife super sharp? :D
Great video like always. I've got a question? What stropping compound do you like. The stuff I have is about gone. An when I went to get more at our local hardware. He laughed at me. Said that company went out of business years ago. It is so worn I couldn't even tell you who made it. It was in a round tin. So if you would be so kind as to a suggestion on what you like in stropping compounds. A couple different grits would be nice. Or just your thoughts on using two strops to put the final edge on. Good luck.
I realize not everyone has a huge slab of marble or polished granite, but would a thick sheet of glass work just as well? What else would you suggest? Love watching your videos ,
Chris h. I got a nice piece of synthetic marble counter top by calling around suppliers here in Oklahoma. The one company said just come on down and pic out a piece you can have for free. Try it and maybe they will have some small pieces you can have. Ray, Oklahoma
Can you make a video on how to train your hands to hold the same angle when you are pulling the blade to you, and pushing the other side away from you so that the angle is the same on both sides? Or some other tip to address we clod-handers that can't keep a consistent angle when reversing the blade? I've learned a lot from your videos, but I still struggle with the two sides keeping the same angle. Why does everyone go on about Mora .. don't they sell Hultafors in the US? I have a Hultafors (again made in Sweden) knife which I bought in the UK - the Hultafors Craftsman's Carbon steel for £6.95 which is equal to less than $10 dollars in the U.S. These knives are in every way as good as their Mora equivalents (including the sheaths) and are at least 30% cheaper! (My friend has a Mora like the one in the vid .. so I do know). They are so good, and so reasonably priced that scout leaders buy them in quantity for their troupes. Check 'em out. If you're in the UK, the best company to deal with for buying knives is probably Heinnie Haynes. This company is so efficient, they would deliver to you by yesterday if it were possible! I've never seen a bad comment made about this company. (.. and no, I have no investment in the company whatsoever) Do they sell Hultafors in the U.S?
Hi Kyle, I'm not a fan of using stones for sharpening. Do you have any electric sharpener recommendations (preferably under 100) that will make my stainless mora razor sharp? Also, how much do you charge to sharpen and spine a knive? Thanks, buck
Hey Buck! May I ask why you do not like whetstones? The benefits of using them are nearly limitless! I do not know of ANY electric sharpening that, alone, will give you a great edge on a scandi. The best I would suggest is a 1x30 belt sander, and set yourself up with some real nice belts. 100 grit all the way to 600 grit, and then get yourself a 1x30 leather belt to go on it (yes, they make them), and a little bit of polishing compound. Practice on a couple cheap knives, but the results when you get it right are amazing!
Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan honestly, I've never really tried wetstones. Do you recommend I try those, or an electric sharpener? I'm assuming wetstones are cheaper, so maybe that's the way to go. Also, what grits or compounds etc?
I just found a mora forest at a flea market that has been abused, you answered all my questions perfectly, Thank you
I’m 61 yrs old. I’ve been sharpening knives for a few decades. I’m learning a great deal from you. I really like your channel.
thanks so much. I think we should assume everyone has atleast SOMETHING to teach us. eh? :-)
Quick, simple and affordable! Great way to get started. Not every town sells quality sharpening stones, but most every town sells wet/dry sandpaper.
Thanks Kyle, you do an excellent job of explaining your sharpening methods. I have benefited greatly from your instruction.
I have always send my outdoor knifes to a pro sharpener. But this video made me order a 400 grit wetstone and a 2000 grit wetstone and a leather strap. Now im gonna try it myself. Thanks dude.
Thanks for your excellent videos on sharpening the Mora knives. I managed to get a really nice edge on several of them following your directions.
My Mora isn’t perfect, but it’s the sharpest it’s ever been. Using the sandpaper was easy. A huge save of time and money. Thank you so much! Amazing results with very little effort and time.!
Awesome! Glad you got good results! :-)

You'll notice here in the comments that people are loving that sheath bud! Congrats on it. Super awesome!
Great explanation with great camera shoots! Thank very much.

I use 320,800 and 1500 grit silicon carbide sandpaper. It works well. The finish was almost mirror and after stropping it looks beautiful.
Great video. You’re very knowledgeable and have an excellent manner of presenting. Subscribed! I’m buying a Mora Companion shortly and will try this technique.
That knife has been on my buy list for a long time - just can't justify it since I don't "need" it. Thanks for the great video
thats how it goes for all my knives
That’s exactly where I’m at I already have the knives I love and use but for some reason I just want one of these to try out on the next hiking trip
Love the Mora's. I have to give mine a little love. I've neglected it. As you know I keep it hooked on my woods bag, never in the woods without it.

Best Sharpening system: 400, 1000 and 3000 grit set sharpening stones or sandpaper,
combined with a leather strop and newspaper.
As always great video with lots of knowledge!Gotta love Mora.My first woodcraft knife was a Mora Companion HD and it’s still going strong.
Awesome you doubled the value of that knife by giving it an Awesome edge
Have a mora forest, now time to improve on it, love the handle, better than a kansbol.
This model Morakniv is the BEST !
Scandi has become my favorite edge. Although I like the convex edge on my wife’s kitchen knives.
I'm able to sharpen my Mora to a razor sharp edge, but I'm having trouble getting a polish finish. Does this mean I'm not spending enough time working my way through the different grits? I'm new to this. Great vids!

I do a lot of my carving knifes this way. Such a great way to do it
I really appreciated your video on sharpening technques
Awsome tip I was go in to by stones not now sand paper does the job fine wot do u think about ceramic for touch ups when u out in the bush or were ever
Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
the same process with sand papers can be done to any other knifes if we dont have sharpstones????thank u
Absolutely!
Ur videos are very helpful. What brand of whetstone would u recommend thanks
You're absolutely talented in the knife world my friend.
Thanks so much my friend. Have you seen my latest series on building a neck knife? :-)
Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan I haven't, but be assured I will. Are any of these knives for purchase? Thanks for the 411.
I love when I go on TH-cam and see you have a new video big fan
That's weird because all my Mora Bushcraft Blacks came razor sharp and thrown some serious sparks. I wonder why that one is different?? Of course I made mine even sharper as well. It was shaving sharp out the box.
so happy i see this thnx for this information!
Is that stainless? What a queen!
Wow man! You really make it look so easy. Two thumbs up from me dude. You really did a nice job with that knife. I have one of the less expensive knives and was really disappointed when it came with that rounded spine. I would’ve thought they’d all come with a 90 seeing what most people use them for. Nice job dude!
I don’t know why I didn’t send my Mora along... lol
I like that set up with the slab and the sand paper.
Nose worthy your sirname got me checking out your chanel haha good to see people that feel and enjoy knives
How did the rubber handle hold-up is it still good or did it fall off?
I like that mora. I'm gonna have to check out the site and see what's new and interesting.
Great video, well explained sharpening techniques. Will be giving it ago 🐻
this knife blade looks somewhat like the Kansbol, have never seen this one on video before
What kind of sandpaper are you using? I don't believe I heard you mention it.
If you care to keep the plastic guard unscratched you can ducttape it and then proceed as in the video. Cheers!
I am glad i looked at this video before buying grindstones worth 100,-
Thanks buddy, i'm gonna get some waterproof sandpaper out the shed and start grinding.
I'm still learning how to sharpen, can't quite get to razor sharp yet but I'm getting better the more I practice.
thanks Shawn! Keep practicing!
well done thanks for the effort- best wishes from Australia.
Hi Kyle love watching your vids have you or could you do a sharpening how to with the Mora eldris knife please
What model moras come ready to strike a fire rod?
Hey, a Scandinavian here. These stainless blades aren't very popular here. My question is, when all the knives that are sold here, comes with Micro bewel, stailess or "black", is there a good reason not to use it as is? I have been bush crafting here in northern Scandinavia/Lapland with Moras and Varustelekas "Terävä" knives mostly, but can't really tell if there is a difference. Well, i don't shave... so do i want my knife super sharp? :D
Awesome! I really like that Mora also.
Kyle, I have the same knife and really like it. The knife has a stainless blade which may be hard to strike a feral rod.
How much do you charge to sharpen mora knives?
I love mora knives. They are very dependable.
agreed
Is that just regular sandpaper or a special type for wet sanding?
How much do you charge for sharpening moras.
I enjoy you work.
Thanks, Aubrey
Aubrey, since you got no reply so far to your question about honing compounds, let me give you my personal opinion. I use the honing line from Porter Cable, and many other tool companies carry similar products as PC but they are handy for me where I live. [BTW, the last time I bought honing compound was probably 5 years ago.] A little goes a long way.
I have 4 grades of PC compound of which I use the coarsest grade very rarely. After any sharpening procedure, my steel is finely polished on ceramic Spyderco stones prior to final stropping. The grades of compound I do use include the Porter Cable blue, white and green in that order of diminishing coarseness. I also use a very fine
small sized Japanese finishing stone, [not a Nagura] for specialty stropping on contoured wood strops and on leather strops I use for certain leather tools which require a special contour. I don't have an opinion on other brands of stropping compound, some are used for machine polishing but, like my compounds from Porter Cable, also seem to do an excellent job for hand stropping on a leather strop. Good luck.
I realize not everyone has a huge slab of marble or polished granite, but would a thick sheet of glass work just as well? What else would you suggest? Love watching your videos ,
Bruce McConnell glass would work as well. Anything that is flat would do.
Will is correct Bruce, glass is probably the most commonly used! But anything flat will work :-)
If you go to a tile store you can get a piece of polished granite tile. Super flat.
Hey Kyle, that's a nice sharpening surface.. Any idea where a fellow Newfoundlander could score a piece smiliar?
Chris h. I got a nice piece of synthetic marble counter top by calling around suppliers here in Oklahoma. The one company said just come on down and pic out a piece you can have for free. Try it and maybe they will have some small pieces you can have. Ray, Oklahoma
Awesome tutorial. Thanks!
How much would you charge for doing this rework process? How can I contact you to do it? Thanks
Amazing how do you sharp the knife with just sandpaper.
The guy bought the wrong knife. If you want an edge on the spine for ferro rods get a Kansbol.
Great video.
Great video. Thank you.

Also how about showing how to improve the eldris, any advice or hints, would be appreciated.
What can you recommend for bringing an edge back on 3v
Beautiful work!
Thanks for sharing👍👍👍
I hate that knife grind on the 2000 and kansibol, double grind thing.
Last Nicholson file I bought was made in Mexico...
unfortunately, yepp… sad.
Good Job :)
Thanks for sharing, great video.
well done
great video Kyle!
Is that sheeth original?
Also, what grits or compounds etc?
love that MORA_______i mean come on.......price Vs Quality ????
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
Thanks for that will try that .from uk
Awesome buddy
Great tutorial 👍
Great video!
