  • Stephen grew up a healthy athlete who never smoked. He had just started his teaching career at 29 years old when he got the shock of his lifetime: he had stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. After genomic sequencing, it came back that he also had the ALK+ mutation.
In this interview with www.ThePatientStory.com founder, Stephanie, this father and husband details three sections of his story:
Video 1: First symptoms, scans, and getting diagnosed
Video 2: Treatment, focused specifically on targeted therapy drug (alectinib)
Video 3: Quality of life reflections

Eat a good amount of cruciferous vegetables everyday
Eat fish and maybe organic beef. And make sure not to eat too much each day.
Make sure to get everything i've stated above as many organic as possible.
Daily exercise to the point of sweating
      Get a lot of sun
      Vitamin D supplement
      1-2 days fast every 2 weeks(water fasting)
Making sure he would also take low doses or chemo or some treatment that keep his cancer in check.

It’s unfortunate that many men feel they have to be stoic or not show “negative” feelings (as many have said). And to be “positive” about a very serious illness is also not good. Telling someone “You’ve got this” and the like doesn’t help with the reality of the situation.
I’m a born pessimist and my family and friends come from an ethnic group that has a deservedly negative outlook on many things. I’m glad about this! False positivity isn’t good.
I wish this man all the best.

He reminds me a lot of my cousin who was diagnosed with a lung cancer at 30 years old.

Anne, thinking of you and your fiance. While we're not a medical advice-giving site, don't be afraid to get a second opinion and we hear from lung cancer patient advocates and oncologists about all the developments in therapies, so genomic testing is something you may want to ask about. -Stephanie

See… you have to go to many many doctors before you can get a diagnosis. If you don’t have insurance, you are behind the 8 ball.
