  • Come help me count as many kererū as possible for the annual Great Kererū count, and help this citizen science project!
The Great Kererū count is a citizen science project here in Aotearoa New Zealand that aims to collect as much data as possible on kererū populations to see how they're doing and how we can conserve them, by getting members of the public to submit kererū observations over 10 days. Kererū are our only endemic pigeons, found nowhere else on Earth, and play a pivotal role in spreading seeds so forests can flourish. Plus they're preeeetty
You can find out more on how to participate in the Great Kererū Count, and submit your observations, right here: www.greatkerer...

This was lots of fun to watch! What a fun annual tradition, and helpful for collecting data as well. Thank you for making this!
PS - I saw zero Kererū today in Canada.

Got to love a nice kererū, so kо̄takataka they are! Best moment seeing one was hearing a rustling in the bach coming back from a walk. Open the door and one is standing in the doorway. Looks up at me and just struts right out unfazed
Must've flown in the kitchen window for the berries (or the wine, those lushes)

Such chunky birds with such tiny looking heads, I love them! They kind of remind me of the Pied Imperial pigeon we get here but that's probably just because they're also big.
    Great job, Sum!

Nice work Summer! Those kererū are absolutely gorgeous, definitely a species I want to see when I finally make it to New Zealand. I’ve heard a lot about Zealandia, but I have a question. Are all of the birds there considered to be wild, or is it more of a captive scenario? Great work Summer!

Come to Wellington we’ve got heaps!! The birds are considered wild - it’s an area of 225 hectares and everything is free to roam and fly in and out, the only things that can’t get in are introduced mammals. Buuut there’s a few exceptions - the birds that can’t fly, like kiwi and takahē can’t get out but they have a big area to roam! And the tuatara as well 😊 some birds in there are self-introduced, have found their own way in. Others, like kiwi and kākā, have been translocated in from predator free islands or captive breeding programmes and are now thriving! Lots of the birds are spreading outside the sanctuary too which is awesome
