It's frustrating that as a kid in Dunedin in the 60s it was so easy to find these anywhere there were a few rocks, we really have done a bad job of looking after our native animals.

Really amazing, I love there are these predator free islands where native animals can do their thing. So cool how many geckos are running about on the island.

@@outdoorswithsum I sent a lizard tail overseas after getting my DNA spiked here in NZ. Strange how it can be traced back to an extinct forest and arrived in NZ about 7,000 years ago at "Pirinoa" But it's classed as native here?
This is the closest New Zealand has to offer about herping. You are not going to find any if you can only approach from afar, are unable to flip or hesitate to use flashlights. Real herping happens in countries with no draconian regulations.
I’ve had some luck taking a careful approach and that’s the best we can do in Aotearoa with the level of protection our reptiles have - too many being poached unfortunately. But can’t wait to travel overseas one of these days and go proper herping!!
@@forral1614 everyone who kills animals out of superstition is by definition primitive. We have too many of them in my country of Greece for example, there are too many everywhere in the world, it’s not a New Zealand specific problem. It is true that so-called minorities are getting more leniency in that. For example my country gypsies kill and eat hedgehogs and tortoises, which are not considered game and they are protected. Nobody prosecutes them.

Never knew New Zeland has such a variety of skinks... Amazing.
mcgregors isnt that common is it? i would say copper skinks are way more common. overall loved the video
