I'm ace panromantic and Christian, but my family and community is very homophobic. I've heard that there is a church that my community hates because the pastor is a lesbian, but I plan to try going to that church in the future when I can drive, because I hate not going to church, but I also hate going and constantly being told "You're going to hell because you're not straight."
I'm glad that there are lots of people who realize that sexuality and faith aren't a problem for each other if you just believe that being yourself and knowing you are loved is right.

One of the reasons I left Christianity is because I could not reconcile "God is Love" with "She has to leave our church because she's a lesbian and won't repent." I grew up with that. As an adult, I've met several Christians who don't feel that way, but it's not a common attitude in my community. I have since found a path that suits me better, but my terrible experiences growing up have made me forever wary of Christians. I'm always happy to meet those that are more open minded, but forgive me if I remain wary. I still can't tell my family several truths about myself.

Once my sister stayed over at her friends place and she slept upstairs and her friend slept downstairs and her dad… R’d her that night… HIS OWN DAMN DAUGHTER…

Okay, this is what I learned both in church and in history class:
The Christmas day we celebrate was NOT the calendar day of Jesus' birth. He would have been born in spring or summer, yes.
The origin of celebrating the nativity in winter comes from missionaries teaching the nativity to the pagans during their winter festivals. The missionaries saw it as their duty to educate the people, who followed what are referred to as, "the old gods," on Christian values and the gift of salvation.
The missions' sermons were not usually successful as not many of the practicing pagans were coming to the chapel to learn about a different religion, so the missionaries decided to give the big announcement, the big lesson of the miracle of Christ's birth, during the solstice and yule celebrations. They would offer hot food and drink and would take the opportunity of having everyone together to tell of that night in the manger.
Eventually, the pagan traditions of the solstice and yule celebrations got intertwined with the, "Christ Mass," as it became annual due to the convenience.
Christ's Mass, eventually, got shortened to Christmas.

I love being Wiccan due to LGBT acceptance. But unfortunately I'm still discriminated on. But my path isn't for some. I've learned to just do me.
I'm not going to go into why the church moved the birth of Jesus to December.. but that too was done to force pagans to give up The Old Religion.

Kinda disagree with your point about Orthodox Jews, it’s such a big group with several different ethnic groups within the term. Orthodox Mizrahi tend to be more progressive than Orthodox Ashkenazim for an example (in my personal experience). On top of this the orthodox communities that I am most familiar with (Ashkenazi) have really been coming around to queer people at a rapid pace, I feel like I’m hearing about gay/bi orthodox weddings all the time these days. Conservative and reform communities are still better for us, but most of the orthodox people I know are quite progressive. Also don’t call Jewish organizations churches, we don’t particularly like that.

There's a statement about it somewhere on the website, though in the past we've had struggles. To me, God didn't put "scorn people for x y and z" in the commandments, He put "Love thy neighbor as thyself". I personally strive to love above else, no matter the person's background, race, orientation, identity, or choices.

I'm a Catholic, and also asexual and a demi-girl (I think my gender identity is still a mess), and the Cathechism (the book that tells us more about Catholicism) is very much against same-sex marriage. I'm not okay with that. My church likes to talk about how when we pick and choose what we believe, that's not okay. Which I understand. But saying that you can't love anyone, you can only love the opposite sex contradicts. We're taught to love everyone the way we love our God. And to not love someone because of their gender or sexuality. I believe in Jesus Christ, and I believe that he loves me no matter what, that he loves everyone on this Earth, and that we should strive to do the same. My family doesn't have these same beliefs, they just go with "love the sinner, hate the sin" But it's not sin. Saying it is is contradiction to what you believe. Everyone is human and love is love. And Jesus loves you!

I'm a bit late to this discussion, but I just had to add this here. (I'm mostly in the closet, but fairly sure I'm bi and ace if that's relevant). I was raised in the Quaker church, and I still attend there with my family every Sunday. Our church is a mixed bag of beliefs, but is very accepting of the LGBTQ+ community. Found out about this on two separate occasions around pride month last year.
1.) Our church has a connection with the university that's located a block away, and they were supposed to take ownership of the building. However, once the president of the university said that same-sex marriages wouldn't be allowed, the deal was off (my dad suggested planting a Pride flag in front of the building after that, lol.)
2.) Our interim pastor (long story) gave a series of sermons regarding the LGBTQ+ community and faith (in a positive accepting way). During worship, a homophobe (who was sitting behind me, not wearing a mask btw) said homophobic comments during open worship. The guy was shut down by someone else no more than 5 minutes later, and he left after that. I've never felt safer in my church since then.
Sorry for the long comment, just thought that this was relevant enough to share here.

Because of the time that all were ordered to return to their hometowns for census and taxation, Joseph had to return to his home town in April, in the year as we record it using a Gregorian calendar of 3 BCE. In Pastor Stokes argument in acceptance of gays in mainstream churches was missed in that Pastor Stokes could have used the example of the Centurion who came to Jesus and asked for help in healing his slave (boyfriend). For a Centurion in a Roman occupied land to ask a trashy Jew to help him, was monumental. By the way in translating the world slave or servant in Greek to English did not mean slave or servant, it translates to someone that is loved. And in the travels that Jesus took from the age of 13 to 29 caused him to become more cosmopolitan and worldly. Jesus was not anti-gay. In fact, he was the purest form of love for all. I'm not a Christian, but I have a tremendous respect for Jesus as a highly evolved soul sent to teach us all a new way.

  • @apt-get2587
    @apt-get2587 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is a very wonderful sentiment that sadly doesn't work. There's no getting around the anti-lgbt messaging in the bible. You can't just take it out, either, because of what Jesus said about not removing any of the scriptures. Ultimately as a pansexual two-spirit, I know that even if the people of a religion accept me, the fundamentals of their faith do not and thus any acceptance is based on willfully ignoring their scripture. And if you're just going to ignore the foundation of your religion, why be a part of it?
Until we get a third Testament that says God accepts the gays for reasons that don't invalidate what Jesus said, there's really nothing I as part of the lgbtq+ community can really do to mesh their religion and my biology together.

I often hear a certain kind of so-called “fundamentalist christian” idolator tell me that “God doesn’t make mistakes; how can you say you ‘feel’ like a woman when God gave you the body you have?” i find this nonsense interesting because it really highlights how little faith these people actually have; babies are also born with diseases that will kill them if a doctor does not intervene. is it sin to heal these children? but also, how can you say you believe in Jesus, through whom “there is neither male nor female,” and then preach of the essential existence of male and female? how can you say you believe in spirit, and yet fixate so entirely on the flesh?
the same goes with “hell,” of course; infernalism is fundamentally anti-Biblical, but if they abandoned it, they would lose their favorite excuse to bully and maltreat people.
